Monday, October 13, 2014 As we are all aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To recognize the month, Calhoun's Student Government Association and Black Student Alliance have come together to host events this week on both the Decatur and Huntsville campuses to provide information on the fight against breast cancer. On Wednesday, October 15 at noon on the Huntsville campus, the College will host a Breast Cancer Awareness seminar in the Student Center. The same seminar will be conducted at the Decatur campus on Wednesday, October 22, 12:30 pm, in the Chasteen Student Center. Speaker for both events is Martha W. Washington, a 15-year survivor of breast cancer. A native of Athens, Alabama, Martha is a graduate of Trinity High School and Alabama A&M University and is a retired federal employee from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Social Security Administration. I understand that Martha is also the aunt to two members of the Calhoun family -- Juana Malone and Wyla Washington. If your schedule permits, I encourage you to attend one of these presentations. Several of you have inquired about recent activities connected to our efforts as a member college of Achieving the Dream (ATD). As was announced at our Kick-off during In-service in August, this first year will be spent planning and gathering data. Our local Achieving the Dream team has conducted several meetings this semester and is hard at work collecting and analyzing data from which we will develop a comprehensive plan for moving forward in our efforts to increase attendance and completion rates among our students. If you are not currently involved with our Calhoun ATD team and are interested, I urge you to contact Vice President Alicia Taylor to discuss ways in which you may participate. Also, as data is being collected to support our Achieving the Dream efforts, our Office of Institutional Research each week will share a data point of particular interest in The Bulletin. This week's data point can be found on Page 2. Finally, a reminder that voting for 2014-15 officers for the Alabama Community College Association remains open until October 24. Our very own Dr. Kemba Chambers, Dean for Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Pre-Engineering, is running for the position of Second Vice President. If you have not yet voted, the ballot may be accessed at www.alabamacca.org. Wishing each of you a very wonderful week.
