The Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Friends in Christ:
Our Second Collection next Sunday is for World Mission Sunday when Catholics of the world unite at Mass to
recommit ourselves to our vocation, through Baptism, to be missionaries. More than a century ago, the Church in
Europe shared its goods with the mission territories in the New World. In those early years of the Society for the
Propagation of the Faith, the United States received almost two-thirds of the first collection taken up for the Missions in
1822. Now, US Catholics are the largest supporters of the daily work and service that take place in the 1,150 mission
dioceses and territories around the world, covering two-thirds of the globe. In a world where so much divides us, World
Mission Sunday rejoices in our unity as missionaries.
I offer the following reflection for this year’s World Mission Sunday from Pope Francis: “Today vast numbers of
people still do not know Jesus Christ. For this reason, the mission ad gentes continues to be most urgent. All the
members of the Church are called to participate in this mission, for the Church is missionary by her very nature: she was
born “to go forth.” The Evangelist tells us that the Lord sent the seventy-two disciples God was near, and to prepare
people to meet Jesus after carrying out this mission of preaching, the disciples returned full of joy: joy is a dominant
theme of this first and unforgettable missionary experience…. World Mission Sunday is a privileged moment when the
faithful of various continents engage in prayer and concrete gestures of solidarity in support of the young Churches in
mission lands. World Mission Sunday is a celebration of grace and joy. All the Lord’s disciples are called to nurture the
joy of evangelization. World Mission Sunday is also an occasion to rekindle the desire and the moral obligation to take
joyful part in the mission ad gentes. A monetary contribution on the part of individuals is the sign of a self-offering, first to
the Lord and then to others; in this way a material offering can become a means for the evangelization of humanity built
on love. World Mission Sunday is an invitation to immerse yourself in the joy of the Gospel and nurture a love that can
light up your vocation and your mission. Dear brothers and sisters, on this World Mission Sunday my thoughts turn to all
the local Churches. Let us not be robbed of the joy of evangelization!” Thank you in advance for your generosity.
There are certain Bible verses Christian stewards have memorized. One of them is in Saint Paul’s letter to the
Philippians found in today’s second reading— “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (4:13). Most
people define themselves either by their problems or their possibilities. Fearful people wake up each morning ensnared
by their problems. Christian stewards wake up reflecting on their possibilities with confidence and hope. Some
stewardship reflection questions for the week: What challenges do you back away from because you doubt that you are
up to them? What would you attempt tomorrow if you were sure God would help you?
In today's Gospel, Jesus articulates the Father's vision for humanity: a "banquet" at which all are respected and
honored for who they are and the goodness they bring to the king's table, be it the "table" of the classroom, the clinic,
the playground, the home. If we are to be truly faithful to God's vision, the compassion of God must transform our heart's
perspective, enabling us to see beyond ethnic stereotypes, economic distinctions, class and celebrity, to recognize
every man, woman and child as made in the same image and likeness of God in which we were all created; we must be
willing both to give joyfully what we have and to accept humbly what others bring to the table. God's "banquet" is only
realized when we embrace a radically new vision of humanity, a perspective that ignores suspicions, doubts and
stereotypes and, instead, recognizes everyone, first, as a child of God, worthy of respect, love and compassion.
In Christ’s peace, Fr Dave

An all school Mass will be celebrated this
Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Leadership provided
by the 5th grade. All are welcome.
St. Anne School began a new program this year
for its junior high students. The program
provides an in depth study of the seven virtues
– a different one for each month. September’s
virtue of the month was Justice and how it
relates to the lives of junior high age students.
At the end of the month, students from each
grade who modeled this virtue to their
classmates were chosen as our Virtuous
Students of the Month. This month’s students
are: Eighth Grade, Johnny Besecker, Chris
Richards, Grace Bedesem, Autumn Cybulski,
Kylie Kirchner and Noah Wolfe; Seventh Grade,
Angelina Banek and Virginia Banek; Sixth
Grade, Sarah Scott, Laura Breslin, Aspen Leed
and Joanne Cybulski.
