Vo l u me 1 | Issu e 1 | April 2 0 1 3 NEWS TALK STC welcomes its NEW Chief Executive Officer We are pleased to welcome Ms Veronique Laporte as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Trading Company Ltd. (STC), effective 27th March, 2013. Prior to joining STC, Ms Veronique Laporte held progressively senior positions in the public and private services sectors, most recently serving as Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health and prior to that the Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation (SPTC). She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Human Resources and a Master’s Degree in Business. She has also been appointed the new chairperson of the Societe Seychelloise d’Investissements (SSI), the agency Goodbye and Thank You to outgoing CEO which manages government shares in enterprises. As an accomplished energetic leader, Ms Laporte also brings to STC a great combination of leadership, inspiration, operational experience, technical breadth, and passion for customer care. We welcome Ms Veronique Laporte and wishing her every success. Matty Molta clinched the President’s Cup Matty Molta from the School of Business Studies and Accounting has won the President’s Cup for her school for the year 2012. She received the recognition in a graduation ceremony held on Thursday 11th April. Having spent 3 years at the said post-secondary school and at the age of 19 years, Ms Molta graduated with an Advanced Diploma in Business Studies and Accounting. She wished to continue with further studies in finance and accounting and aspire to be a qualified Accountant. She is currently a Trainee in STC Accounts section. Mr. Patrick Vel, the outgoing Chief Executive Officer (CEO), leaves STC after being with the company for the past 5 years. We thank him for all his work, support and guidance given throughout his time at STC. Wishing Mr. Vel all the best in his new endeavours. Residing in the district of Cascade Ms Molta is a young and keen athlete, whereby she is a member of the Anse Royale Women’s volleyball team and also affiliated with the athletic team, Top racers. STC’s Scholarship Editorial Hello everyone and welcome to this first issue of the company’s newsletter, NewsTalk, for the year 2013. In this edition, we are pleased to welcome our new CEO, Ms Veronique Laporte who has taken office as of end March as she succeeds Mr Patrick Vel, who has been heading STC since its inception in March 2008. Two of our employees, Ms. Jeanine Baptiste from the Trade Marketing Department and Mr. Renny Bijoux from the Information System Unit graduated with honours recently. Miss Baptiste read for a degree in Business Administration specialising in International Business while Mr. Renny Bijoux completed his undergraduate degree in the field of Computer Information System. It is to be noted that STC offered them the scholarship. The graduation ceremony; a historic and momentous event was held on Friday 7th December, 2012 at the University of Seychelles Theatre at the Anse Royal campus. The President of the Republic, Mr. James Michel who is also the Chancellor of the University of Seychelles, the cabinet of ministers, dignitaries and the family members of the graduands were amongst those who attended the ceremony. Fire Safety Training In this issue we bring you some activities over the past four months, news happening both in the company and pertinent information on our staff. Happy Reading! Farewell A fire safety training was organised at the beginning of the year with the main objective of giving our staff the knowledge and skills needed in any fire eventuality. The training which was conducted by the Fire Services Agency, comprised of theorital and practical sessions. Beneficial Tips of the training. Staff is more aware of what to do to in case of a fire in the work place and at home. Knows how to handle any Fire equipment and/or materials available in the work place to put out a fire. More aware of the different causes of fire. Be more conversant with safety procedures in cases of fire. Be conversant with evacuation procedures. Knowing what to do when trapped inside a building in the case of fire. Michel Fanchette started work with STC as the Manager of Meat Unit in March 2008 and was the Business Manager for Perishables Unit and Inner Islands at the time he left early this year. Michel is recognised for his hard work and devotion, easy going person with a good sense of humour. The University of Seychelles offers the majority of its courses at undergraduate level through the University of London International Programme. The University of London hosted its graduation ceremony at the Barbican Centre in London on the 19th March, 2013 and Miss. Baptiste and Mr. Bijoux and a group from the first cohort had the privilege to attend this auspicious ceremony. They are both proud of such an achievement. Miss. Baptiste and Mr.Bijoux who joined STC in July last year stated that they have gained valuable knowledge and expressed their wish to apply their knowledge and contribute towards improving the bottom line. STC was amongst 6 other companies that offered scholarship to the UniSey students during 2009. A Journey to Save the Arctic Renny Bijoux plants flag at North Pole! A group of young people including Renny Bijoux from the Seychelles, an Arctic ambassador with the North Pole expedition team has just returned from the North Pole. They went to declare the North Pole protected on behalf of all life on Earth. Backed by millions, they planted a flag for the future on the seabed and called for a sanctuary in the uninhabited area around the pole. We wish him also the best in his future undertakings. This year to mark the occasion, STC had a special promotion themed ‘From STC with love’ whereby participants could qualify for a draw to win a romantic dinner for two at La Plaine St Andre. X-Mas Shop and Fly promotion winners Congratulations to Mr. Labrosse and Mrs. Dorothy Morin our lucky winners of the X-Mas Shop and Fly promotion. This promotion was the fruit of a partnership between STC and Air Seychelles. Clients had to shop for Rs1000 to qualify for the lucky draw to win a return ticket to Abu Dhabi compliments of our national airline Air Seychelles. The Shop and Fly promotion run from 1st December 2012 until the 15 January 2013 at all STC’s retail location include the Airport Duty Free, Gift Shops and Supermarket. The promotion saw more than 1500 clients qualify for the draw which took place on the 14th February 2013 to mark Valentine’s Day at the Seychelles Gift Shop. The draw coincide with the activities organize by STC for Valentine’s Day in the presence of the marketing team and Air Seychelles officials. And on that special day, the Seychelles Trading Company presented all the ladies with a rose each. A simple yet symbolic gesture; this was the company’s way of showing great admiration to all the female members of staff, women who despite everything work real hard and contribute immensely towards the bottom line. The International Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900’s and it is now an annual event. A 200 ml deodorant spray cost SCR 45.50, a 50ml roll-on cost SCR 33.00 while a 250ml shower gel cost SCR 29.00. ‘Monsavon’ is but one of Unilever’s numerous brands. Cheeses & Cold Meat Customers can now choose from a wide selection of nutritious cheese in the likes of parmesan, camembert, brie, mozzarella, edam & gouda slices. purchase the camembert cheese (250g) at SCR 57.75. The grated parmesan cheese (70g) retails at SCR 34.00 whilst the ‘Top budget – St. Paulin cost SCR 50.00. Over and above the variety of cheeses, clients can also buy cold meat; patés, duck mousses, chicken ham and chorizo slices. Their prices of these products range from SCR 31.00 to SCR 50. Both, the cheeses and the cold meat are imported from France. The first consignment was brought in last December. STC receives new stocks every fortnight. The cheeses and cold meat are only available at the STC Supermarket. The prices of these cheeses vary; the brie (200g) can be bought at SCR 59.50 while customers can Investing in the Seychellois athletes The Seychelles Trading Company was amongst several companies that contributed towards the successful organization of the ‘Sports Award 2012’. STC sponsored prizes for the Karting Federation and the prizes went to Mrs. Debra Mellon and Mr. Andrew Gabriel. They received SCR 6000 each. They received their awards during the Sports Award Ceremony held at the International Conference Centre on Friday 25th January 2013. This is the very first time that STC sponsored the Karting Federation, the company used to sponsor the Volley-Ball Federation. In fact, STC has been rallying behind our sportsmen/ sportswomen for decades. The Company’s effort did not go unnoticed as STC received a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ from the Nation Sports Council (NSC). This was during a ceremony held at the ‘Stad Linite’ on the 22nd January, 2013. STC was among 24 other companies commanded for their contribution towards the promotion and development and promotion of sports in Seychelles. STC Social Committee (SSC) -2013 The new committee met for the 1st time on Tuesday 26th February with their members being nominated by their respective GMs. There is the need to be more attentive to staff and it is imperative to create a greater sense of belonging towards the company and to achieve this staff needs to feel valued hence the need to promote IPR. The committee has been mandated to organise activities for staff members, oversee several projects with the aim of creating a more conducive working environment.
