SHABBAT BERESHIT
SHABBAT MEVARCHIM
Torah Page: 2 | Haftarah Page: 21
Haftarah: Skylar Palachi
RABBI’S SHABBAT MESSAGE
When G-d began to create heaven and earth—the earth being
unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the deep and a
wind from G-d sweeping over the water—G-d said, “Let there be
light”; and there was light. G-d saw that the light was good, and
G-d separated the light from the darkness. G-d called the light Day,
and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and there
was morning, a first day.”
Perhaps the most well known part of all Biblical literature is the very
first part of the Torah, of the Bible. What is remarkable is that from all
its doesn’t say is all that it actually ends up saying. Nowhere here does
it tell us when, or how, or even why (although we are free to draw our
own thoughts and ideas as we wish – the rabbis of Jewish tradition
filled books with their ideas). So, let us turn to our great commentator,
the indomitable Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (aka RaShi) from the 11th
century to see what he takes from this beginning of beginnings: “…the
entire earth belongs to the Holy One, blessed be He…”
RaShi is taking from this start to the Torah, as to why we are even
told of the story of creation itself, is to remind us that we are not
owners of this earth. We are custodians, and caretakers, we assume
power but the power we have is finite, while the earth is a testament
to the Creator. Ultimately, Rashi is teaching us that a humble heart is
a healthy heart – we hold to what we have, but we are asked to be
mindful that our grip is a short one.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Aaron Flanzraich
