St. John University Parish—Morgantown, West Virginia
Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time—October 19, 2014
Today is World Mission Sunday! We
are invited to reach out and help build
the Church in Mongolia, the world’s
youngest Catholic Church, as well as
local churches throughout the Missions,
in the most remote areas across our
world. Your prayers and generous gifts to the Society
for the Propagation of the Faith in the collection today help the work of priests, religious and lay leaders
as they offer the poor practical help and the experience of God’s mercy. Please keep the Missions in
your daily prayers and be as generous as you can in
today’s second collection. For more information
please visit www.IAmAMissionary.org
CSI for all High School Teens will be held
this Sunday, October 19, from 4:30 pm to
6:15 pm in Newman Hall.
“The Joy of the Gospel” Adult Faith Formation
continues to meet each Monday at 7:00 pm in the
Chapel/Library. They are reading Pope Francis’
Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium. All are
welcome!
November Remembrance Candles Here
at St. John’s, in observance of All Souls
Day, we remember all parishioners and family members who have died in the past year
by writing their names on candles and placing these candles around the church during
the month of November. If you would like
us to remember someone in your immediate family in
this way, please contact the parish office by Monday,
October 27th.
Parents If you are the parent of a child who attends
Children’s Religious Education (CRE) or High School
Confirmation formation and you did not receive an
email with the calendar/schedule of classes
attachment, please contact our Coordinator of CRE,
Marge Marino at [email protected] or leave
a message with your name and phone number at 304292-6024. We want to be sure we are able to reach all
our families by email. If you have any questions or
concerns, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for
your cooperation!

Have you ever thought about volunteering to help
people with their tax returns? Volunteering in the
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) can be
rewarding while serving a vital role in your local
community. The VITA program generally offers free
tax help to people with low to moderate income who
need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.
This includes people with disabilities. Many sites also
assist those for whom English is a second language.
To learn more about becoming a volunteer,
contact Kandi Shafer, Regional Director, Catholic
Charities West Virginia at [email protected] or
304-292-6597 ext. 3. Catholic Charities will once
again be preparing returns out of their Morgantown
office in Westover.
Next Sunday is FOOD SUNDAY
On the 4th Sunday of each month,
St. John University Parish supports
the local Catholic Charities food pantry by collecting non-perishable food
it ems, to iletries and cleaning
supplies. Next weekend, please bring your donations
and place them in the barrel in the church entry. Nosalt, low-salt and healthier food options are always
appreciated. You may also donate cash or by check in
the regular collection; just place it in an envelope
marked “food donation.” Thank you!

October is Respect Life Month
Imagine yourself pausing in front of a design of
great beauty. Your soul quiets and is filled with wonder
and awe.
If art, created by man, can evoke such a response
within us, how much more is the same wonder,
reverence and respect due to each person we encounter,
who was handcrafted by the very God who spoke the
world into being?
Now think of an artist stepping back from a great
work of art and admiring his or her creation.
When God created each of us, He did so with
precision and purpose, and He looks on each of us with
love that cannot be outdone in intensity or tenderness.
Moreover, the Lord invites each of us to behold ourselves and each other with the same wonder and awe.
No matter how the world might view us or others, let
us treat each person as the masterpiece that he or she is.

Call to Action—Live the Beatitudes!
We, the masterpieces of God's creation, are called to be
merciful, clean of heart, yes, even insulted and
persecuted, because we are called to stand up for justice.
What Can We Do?
∗
Incorporate the U.S. bishops’ Petitions for Life in
your daily prayers. They can be found at http://
www.usccb.org/about/pro-life-activities/respect-lifeprogram/upload/Respect-Life-Month-Intercessions-forLife.pdf
∗
Read and reflect on Pope St. John Paul II's
encyclical, Evangelium Vitae
http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/
encyclicals/documents/hf_jpii_enc_25031995_evangelium-vitae_en.html
∗
Treat everyone around you - regardless of age, race,
economic status, intelligence, physical or mental
ability, criminal record, gender, sexual orientation with the dignity and respect due to a child of God.
∗
Join an organization such as Pax Christi, a Rightto-Life organization, Amnesty International, or
an Anti-Hunger organization.
