Welcome to Seymour’s 2015 arts education program.
This year’s program takes an important leap forward
in two areas:
Firstly we welcome Sport for Jove as our 2015
resident arts education company. Inside this brochure
you will discover Sport for Jove’s most extensive
program of performances and symposiums to date,
designed to connect students with outstanding
productions and workshops, tailored to meet
syllabus objectives.
Secondly, I’m very proud that as part of The University
of Sydney, Seymour’s arts education program
includes performances that investigate a range of
contemporary issues, featuring post-show workshops
and discussions with leading University academics:
What is the Matter with Mary Jane? has become
a classic play text, tackling the complex issues
surrounding young people battling eating disorders.
Experts from the University of Sydney’s Charles
Perkins Centre join us to present this work, providing
a range of quality add-on workshops to understand
more about this complex disease.
Grounded is presented in partnership with the
United States Studies Centre and investigates the
impact on the personal lives of fighter pilots engaged
in drone warfare. This play has achieved considerable
international success and will stimulate great
discussion for students of politics, modern history
and performance.
In 2015, Seymour’s arts education program
adds significant value to not only the study of the
creative arts but to a wide range of subject areas.
In this brochure you will discover opportunities for
your students to learn through the arts about the
experience of young refugees, about the great
depression in America and, for primary students,
have the opportunity to experience Shakespeare
for the first time.

plunges students into the heat of the shortest night of the
year, young lovers and work-a-day dreamers plunge into

every fairy-story, warns us that family, love and friendship
are fragile – when parents are selfish, their children break
the rules; when love rears its head, friendships are forgotten;

CDP PRESENTS TWO MAGICAL SHOWS
PRIMARY
May Gibbs’ quintessentially Australian classics have
fascinated and delighted generations of children and families,
introducing them to the wonder and magic of the Australian
bush. In this new adaptation for children aged 5–10 and their
families, these iconic tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie
come alive on stage for contemporary audiences.
The gumnut babies are on a mission to see a human – but
only in the distance! On their journey to the big city they
meet friends and foes including Professor Kookaburra, Mrs
Fantail, Mr Lizard, Mr Frog, Mrs Snake, Mr Possum and, of
course, Little Ragged Blossom.
Can Snugglepot lead the way? Can Cuddlepie hold his
nerve? Can they avoid falling victim to the Big Bad Banksia
Man? These beloved characters come to life on stage as this
funny, enchanting production introduces today’s children to
the wonderful world of May Gibbs.

an unfathomable sadness in a man’s heart…the mysterious
terrors of the ocean…hate crime and religious intolerance…

hurt and hinder us to this day in our struggle to know the
difference between mercy and justice.
Some of Shakespeare’s most extraordinary characters people
this play. Portia, the brilliant young woman who dresses as
a man to save the Merchant’s life and bears witness to an
untold passion between Antonio and her husband, Bassanio.
And at the centre of them all in the court of Venice stands a

most profound eras of disillusionment. The play, adapted
by John Steinbeck from his extraordinary novel, remains a
stunning indictment, particularly in today’s era of economic,
political and moral disillusionment, of how we treat our
disenfranchised fringe dwellers, our migrant peoples and our
most vulnerable citizens.

What is the Matter with Mary Jane? is the powerful, funny
and inspiring, one woman show about Robinson’s 12-year
rollercoaster ride into the torturous world of eating disorders.
Mary Jane has become a classic play text not only as a
fine example of solo drama performance but as a deeply
insightful tool for understanding the complex issues
surrounding eating disorders.
This searingly honest piece delves into this mental illness,
exposing the hopelessness felt when trapped within such
a disorder. It will have you in fits of uncontrollable laughter
and, the next minute, in compassionate silence. This is a
heart wrenching comedy but most of all, it’s true.

SFJ’s Symposiums offer fully realised performances of large
sections of the Board of Studies set texts in the 2015 HSC
syllabus, interspersed with expert commentary and analysis
from Damien Ryan and his team – exploring key scenes
and speeches from multiple perspectives, opening up
diverse critical readings, detailed unlocking of language and
character in performance, hearing actors discuss the plays’
famous ambiguities and challenges, answering questions and
taking direction live on stage from your students.

the Seymour Centre
Each year the Seymour Centre is proud to host a
number of major performing arts events for The
Arts Unit of the NSW Department of Education and
Communities including HSC showcase programs in
partnership with the the Board of Studies, Teaching
and Educational Standards.
OnSTAGE
OnSTAGE is a presentation and exhibition of group and
individual performances and projects by HSC Drama
students. In 2015 there will be two programs featuring
individual performances and group-devised works. Writers
OnSTAGE / OnSCREEN features rehearsed readings by
professional actors and directors of two scripts plus the
screening of three exemplary videos from individual projects
of the HSC Drama exam. Individual projects including

Callback 2014
A selection of outstanding performances and films from
Higher School Certificate Dance students presented by
The Arts Unit in conjunction with the Board of Studies,
Teaching and Educational Standards. Callback provides a vital
window to the outcomes of the HSC Dance syllabus and a
professional learning activity for HSC Dance teachers, both
in service and pre-service. Dance students and especially
prospective HSC Dance students, rely upon Callback as
a valuable resource for their study through discussion,
deconstruction and analysis of the works they observe.
Workshops covering various aspects of the HSC Dance
Course are run in conjunction with the performances.

Cool for School
Australia’s jazz legends and principal artists share the passion
and adventure of jazz and improvisation in Cool for Schools.
The 2015 program features jazz innovator Ben Hauptmann
with his looping, layering and ad-libbing electro-band MIDI
of the Road. Students will also experience Flamenco/jazz
sensation Bandaluzia as they share all the fire of a uniquely
Spanish tradition complete with foot-stomping dancer while
The Vampires show us how to stay cool with their special
blend of Afro-Peruvian and reggae-infused jazz.

The Seymour has easy drop off and pick up points for
buses on City Rd or Shepherd St, behind the Seymour

Foyers and Courtyard
The Seymour has expansive foyer and courtyard spaces
where students can safely gather before and after the show.
Victoria Park
Victoria Park (pictured) is directly opposite the Seymour:
a great place to take students after the show to eat lunch
before the journey home.
Where Are We?
Located conveniently at the Broadway end of the city, we’re
close to Central and Redfern Stations, with great transport
links, ample parking and plenty of nearby facilities.

Payment and final numbers are due three weeks prior to the
event you are attending. Please ensure you pay no later than
the due date on your invoice. Bookings made within three
weeks of the performance will need to be paid in full within
one week of confirmation.
