illnesses, injuries and scenarios that an EMS practitioner might
encounter. The course provides an in-depth understanding of the
pathophysiology of the most common pediatric emergency issues,
and stresses critical thinking skills to help practitioners make the best
decisions for their patients.
EPC uses the Pediatric Assessment Triangle (PAT) as a tool to help
EMS practitioners rapidly and accurately assess pediatric patients and
incorporates family centered care throughout all scenarios. Training
encompasses lectures, hands-on skills practice and small group critical thinking discussions.
Topics include: understanding kids; airway, breathing and oxygenation; cardiac emergencies; child abuse and neglect; common
medical emergencies; the importance of family; hypoperfusion and
shock; newborn resuscitation; pediatric trauma; and special health
care needs.
EPC is for all emergency medical technicians and paramedics committed to providing quality care for pediatric patients. Flexible course
formats fit the continuing education needs of all EMS practitioners:
traditional two-day face-to-face Provider Course, an accelerated twoday Provider-Instructor Course, and a Hybrid Course that combines
eight hours of online training followed by on-site interactive stations.

EMS just took a seat at the Big Table of Medicine
Presenter: Edward M. Racht, M.D., AMR Chief Medical Officer
As the world of healthcare changes rapidly around us, clinical and policy decision makers have taken note of the powerful role
an EMS system plays in managing patients. Medicine’s newest subspecialty has come of age and EMS now sits at the Big Table of
Medicine. As a profession, we earned our place by focusing on applying our unique expertise in tough environments. Now it’s time to
start helping prepare the meals…
Breakout Sessions – Sunday, October 19, 2014
2:00 PM
Provider A: Implementing TXA into Pre-hospital
care for Trauma Patients
Dr. Phillip Coule
Provider B: Provider 911 Calls on College Campuses
Rachel Barnhard, BA, NREMT-P
There are dozens of colleges, universities, and satellite campuses in
Georgia, and they are physically located in every region of the state.
For EMS providers, 911 calls on these campuses present special
challenges. As the director of Georgia’s only full-service collegiate
EMS agency, I have gained a unique perspective that bridges the gap
between academic institutions and EMS.
Educator: CoAEMSP- Accreditation

Dr. David Goo
Provider B: Creating a Compliance Plan
4:40 PM
Provider A: Same Physics. Different responses. The

Dr. Ed Racht
Could you imagine OnStar calling 911 with physiologic data when
no one else is around? Can you picture reconstituting a powdered
form of human plasma to enhance perfusion in a critically injured
MVC? While the physics of acute injury are just as frustrating as
they’ve always been, exciting new approaches to recognition and
management of trauma patients continue to expand our ability
to treat this challenging population more effectively. Can you say

Educator: Harnessing the power of the Millenials
Jennifer Burkholder, RN and David Foster, III, MLS, EMTP
This presentation will demonstrate the difference in the current
generations of employees and /or students. Each generation has
its own unique attributes, yet many similarities with the other. We
will compare and contrast these difference and teach the attendees
varies techniques for dealing with each.
Breakout Sessions – Monday, October 20, 2014
8:45 AM
Chris Kelly, Esq.
The Affordable Care Act requires all ambulance services to have a
compliance plan in place. Learn what a compliance plan is, the basic
elements included in a compliance plan and how to enforce your
plan within your service.
Educator: C.A.T. Management for EMS Education
Chad Bird, BS, FP-C, NRP
Consistency, Accountability, and Time (C.A.T.) management are three
of the most important factors for a successful class outcome. This
presentation is designed to generate discussion about challenges
EMS educators face to maintaining C.A.T. management with their
classes and ways to improve overall class management. This class
will also emphasize the importance of positive leadership in the
classroom setting to uphold C.A.T. management.

GA EMS
Provider: Pediatric Shock
Dr. Toni Petrillo
Educator: Have we outgrown ALS & BLS – Is it time
for ULS?
Dr. Ed Racht
BLS & ALS have served us well. The designations penetrate
everything we do in EMS, from initial education, to system design to
regulatory oversight. But does this historical approach still apply to
our new world of EMS? With ALS interventions now being performed
by the lay public, is it time for EMS to move to the next level? This
intriguing discussion has implications for EMS providers at all
levels…
Breakout Sessions – Monday, October 20, 2014
(cont.)
9:45 AM
Provider: Pitfalls of Caring for Emergent Patients
Dr. James Black
Several seemingly simple non-acute complaints along with images
will be presented to the audience. Each of these “fast track or urgent
care” will have a more serious condition revealed. The second
half of the lecture will involve a detailed case presentation to the
audience with clues leading to the diagnosis. An in depth history of
present illness, physical exam, diagnostic labs and radiologic studies
with several images will be provided. The audience will have the
opportunity to analyze the information and obtain the diagnosis.
There will be prize money available if, within the given time frame,
the correct diagnosis is reached.
Educator: Lightening Rounds – Clinical tracking,
Accreditation, Medical Direction
11:15 AM
Provider: It’s Just a Bump on the Head! Put me
back in the game, coach and the team need me!
Bryan Ericson, M.ed., RN, NRP
Helping the EMS provider better understand, identify and treat the
concussion patient. Is it ever “just a concussion” or is it something
much more? We will focus on concussion and why we need to worry
about over and under diagnosis, and we will spend time on patho,
assessment and treatment.
Educator: Cardiocerebral Resucitation
Jason Grady, NRP
Over the past 40 years and many major ACLS updates the survivor
rate of out of hospital cardiac arrest remains less than 8%. Could
it be that we have been focusing on the wrong priorities? Better
understanding of the pathophysiology of sudden cardiac death
will lead us to the conclusions of best, evidence based practice.
Models and experience have demonstrated that it is possible to
achieve survivor rates of 30% and higher, but only if we are willing
to understand the data and implement potentially controversial
practice.
1:30 PM
Provider: Lightening rounds - Toxicology, Spinal
Immobolization, Airway Control
Educator: When do we know they are ready?
Beyond passing the test!
Bryan Ericson, M.ed., RN, NRP
Identifying the three keys of competence to help insure your
students are equipped and prepared for a successful career in EMS.
We will focus on identifying and documenting student competence
and tips and tools to help will be provided.

3:00 PM
Provider: Stroke Update
Dr. Diogo Haussen
The acute stroke update will include discussion of novel tools
and treatments in the field of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.
Participants will hear about the most current research in the field.
Elements critical to field assessment of stroke patients will be
discussed. Case studies will be presented to illustrate concepts.
Educator: Photography for the Emergency Services
Instructor; Improving your presentations to keep
your students interest
Greg Hartshorne, CPT, EMTP
Are you tired of delivering the same generic presentations? Would
you like to keep your student’s attention and have them focus on the
material you are presenting? Have you ever given a lecture, pointed to
a picture, and had to explain the differences in what is pictured and the
equipment your service uses?
This presentation will demonstrate some fundamental principles
of how to take better photographs and incorporate them into your
lessons and presentations. The material covered can be applied to
taking photos with your cell phone as well as using digital cameras.
Thinking you have to have an expensive camera to take quality
photographs is as false as thinking appetizing food can only be cooked
on high-priced stoves! You will leave this lecture and begin taking
better photos right away with the concepts presented in this class.
4:15 PM
Provider: The Friday Night Medical Time OutTM
Dr. Jim Kyle
The Friday Night Medical Time OutTM is safe sports-play concept that
enforces communication, preparation, organization and participation
before kickoff at high school football games. The MTO is designed
to prepare Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, Team
Physicians, Athletic Trainers and anyone designated as responsible
for the medical well-being of athletes or spectators on game day to
simply be aware, prepared and educated. Communication between
these individuals can make the difference between a positive
outcome and a negative experience should an injury or incident
occur. Following the Friday Night Medical Time Out procedure
reduces and, in most cases, eliminates chaos and confusion.
Educator: Active Shooter Drill Retrospect
Cpl. Justin Guck and Lt. John Poe
Lt. John Poe and Corporal Justin Guck will be presenting “Active
Shooter and Beyond” about how Gwinnett County was able to
combine police and fire efforts in an active threat event for the
purpose of life preservation. They will also discuss the success and
challenges to large scale training.
General Sessions – Tuesday, October 21, 2014
8:45 AM - Topic TBA
Mike Reynolds
9:45 AM - State Office of EMS Update
Keith Wages
11:15 AM - Sepsis Alert
Dr. Marie Carmelle-Elie and Dr. Van Dillen
Severe sepsis can result in death rates as high as 80% in certain
populations, and outcomes can result in long-term disability. The
diagnosis of sepsis can be challenging, however the recognition of
the syndrome in its earliest stages can provide critical opportunities
for increasing survival and preventing organ injury. In the hospital,
10
GA EMS
countless reports have identified that sepsis outcomes are associated
with early identification and treatment. Pre-hospital recognition and
management of sepsis patients may reduce the time to aggressive
resuscitation and decrease the complications associated with this
devastating syndrome.
CLOSING KEYNOTE
12:15 PM - Recalculating... Make a Legal U-Turn...
Now what? I think my EMS GPS is lost....
Presenter: Bryan Ericson, M.ed., RN, NRP
One day it’s one thing, and the next day it is totally different.
Mapping out and developing a plan to thrive in the everchanging environment of Pre-Hospital Medicine and EMS.
