Seminar: Implementing Sustainability in Nordhavn
Friday, June 21 2013,
Venue: Guest canteen, Aalborg University, A.C. Meyers Vænge 15, Copenhagen SV
The master plan for Nordhavn in Copenhagen Municipality sets ambitious targets for sustainable urban
development. Research indicates that there are huge challenges involved in achieving such. Researchers and
students involved in the Masters of Science program ”Sustainable Cities” at Aalborg University in Copenhagen provide constructive suggestions as to what can be done. The seminar will provide inspirational insights into
implementation challenges and serve as a forum to discuss future planning practices on the basis of the on-going
development of Nordhavn. The seminar is organized into three main themes, where the researcher from which
has supervised the students shortly introduces the topic, followed by the students’ analysis of the challenges and possibilities and ending with short Q&As from key staff from Copenhagen Municipality.

Strategic planning of green roofs in Nordhavnen
- Introduced by Birgitte Hoffman
Green roofs are planned for Nordhavn for their aesthetic and recreational value. Based on
research on current green roofs in Copenhagen and among actors involved, it appears that the
reality for green roofs in Copenhagen did not live up to the original vision. How can the vision for
green roofs in Nordhavn be achieved, avoiding the same situation? Recommendations will be
presented.

Strategic Mobility Planning in Nordhavn - What choices do we have?
- Introduced by Brian Vad Mathiesen
As Copenhagen pursues its vision to become a sustainable city of the future, we investigate
what effects different transport system investments have in Nordhavn. The use of scenarios to
the year 2050 aims to inform planners of their possible options, adding to their choice
awareness whilst highlighting the effects of decisions made now, particularly regarding CO2
emissions and land use variables. Transport systems will be explored, using case studies from
around the world to inspire thought, culminating in a recommended strategic plan for the
area. Ultimately, this research aims to initiate debate as to what strategic transport system
will best fit Nordhavn on the road to 2050.

Nordhavn - A living laboratory for sustainable mobility?
- Introduced by Morten Elle
This project argues that the phased implementation of Nordhavn provides excellent
opportunities for strategic use of experimentation to coin successful sustainable solutions. The
research depicts how such an approach to mobility planning can be carried forward in
Nordhavn. The point of departure is how learnings from other European city quarters with
innovative mobility concepts can feed into the context of Nordhavn. The research explores ways
of working with a living laboratory approach in Nordhavn, presenting results from a multistakeholder workshop on this topic.
