Twenty-Ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time
YÜÉÅ à{x Wxá~ Éy à{x ctáàÉÜ
One more week until our 3rd “Serafini’s Spaghetti Dinner”! I really can’t believe that
it is the third time around already. The legion of people that has been working on this
for weeks and months has it down to a science. I am really very, very thankful for their
dedication, loyalty, and hard work. They have been planning and organizing, and making improvements left and right. It will prove to be another great day next Sunday. Plan
on spending the day with us! Thank you so much to Tami Carrara for her gift of wine.
Tami owns Sparkling Ponds Winery in Ripley, NY. We are grateful to Terry and Paula
Carrara of Serafini’s for allowing us to continue this tradition, and donating that fantastic sauce! We have
one more week to sell or purchase the tickets on the hottest Corvette around! (Remember, you can take
the $40,000 in cash, too!) I am so hoping that the majority of the parish will buy their tickets. So, send
out an email or Twitter or Facebook … even smoke signals if you have to … one more week to get the
chance to take home a brand, spanking new Corvette Stingray!
Last week, I completely forgot to mention that it was Fire Protection Week, a week of honoring all
those women and men who risk their lives protecting our homes, businesses, churches, and families. Here
at St. Jude’s, we are especially indebted to the fire fighters of the West Lake Fire Department … who all
volunteer to protect us! On October 4th, I had the great honor of attending their Open House and offered a
blessing upon them and upon their fleet of vehicles. It was very nostalgic, for I distinctly
remember the
original orange-bricked fire house and I remember them building the new one in ’76. (My father had his
bakery across the street in the 2nd half of the ‘70’s … where that children’s consignment store is now …
and my family worked there every day after school, and all weekend long.) I would watch those fire fighters leave that garage time after time, sirens blaring, wondering how bad of a situation they were going to.
I will always remember that August Saturday in 1979, when they emptied the fire house and headed a few
blocks over to Shorehaven Drive, when the Millcreek Police helicopter crashed on the fence of that little
powerhouse. Pilot Joe Metz was burned over 90% of his body but survived. By the grace of God, co-pilot
and current Millcreek Township Supervisor Dick Figaski, managed to escape the worst of the fire. Like so
many countless other incidents, the members of the West Lake Fire Department are on the scene in
minutes, not knowing if their lives are at risk or not. But they do it anyway. May we offer our support
and most especially, our prayers for them, their safety, and their families. And, we cannot forget the
members of the Erie Fire Department, as well. Our parish boundaries go past Pittsburgh Avenue, all the
way to Lincoln … and, hundreds of our families are under their protection. Coming from someone who
lost our home to a devastating fire, please allow me to remind us all of the need to offer prayers for all of
our local firefighters. They sure deserve it for all that they do for us.
As of this writing, I have not heard any reports about the Synod on the Family in Rome that
concluded last week. I am very anxious to hear of any results. I understand that there were about 300
bishops from all over the world. I would imagine, with probably about 300 different opinions, that it may
be a while before the Holy See comes out with any conclusions. I know that many people are hoping
that Pope Francis makes some sweeping changes in all kinds of things, such as annulments, and who can
or cannot receive Communion. I guess that I just urge us all to be patient and understanding, knowing the
complexities of trying to lead a 2,000-year old faith, with countless cultures. This is where the Holy Spirit steps in …!
This Saturday, October 18th, was the 27th anniversary of my Diaconate Ordination! It has been that
long since I knelt before Bishop Michael Murphy, and committed my life to celibacy and obedience, all
for the people of God. I haven’t regretted it for a single instant, and I would recommend this life to anyone!
Have a great week! Sell those tickets!

The Saint Jude the Apostle Church Friends over 50 had over 30
members today at Perkins for lunch. Courtney Roca, PT, DPT from
Saint Vincent Rehab Solutions spoke about fall preventions.
A beautiful day to enjoy lunch and learn about health.
Celebrating Grandparents
Day at OLCS
Over 400 grandparents shared a morning of memories with their grandchildren.
The grandparents enjoyed service projects
with their grandchildren. Together, they
designed quilt
patches for Project Linus, prepared Christmas
cards for the military and prayer cards for the
homebound of St. Jude’s. Our grandparents
and grandchildren prayed the rosary and
concluded the day with a prayer service.
A ministry of St. Jude the Apostle Church
This ministry provides contact to women in the first 12 months after
the loss of a spouse. It is not a support group. It is a one-on-one conversation between a woman who has been widowed and one who is newly
experiencing widowhood. Contact can be simply in the form of a phone call
a month or so after the loss—after the new widow’s family and friend network have gone on with
their lives. This time is most difficult for widows since they are trying to make sense of a life
permanently changed.

Street. Time is 12 Noon. Carol Layden will be the
gracious lady in charge. Info on price, etc. will be
forthcoming, so be sure to check the bulletin.
Remember ALL are welcome.
Company, food, and program always make
for a fun afternoon.
All Souls Day will be celebrated
at the noon mass on
Sunday, November 2, 2014.
This mass remembers in a special way
those who have gone before us. We will
recognize during the mass all of the

Twenty-Ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time
1 Timothy 6:7-10 – For we brought nothing into this world, just as we shall not be able to
take anything out of it. If we have food and clothing, we shall be content with that. Those
who want to be rich are falling into temptation and into a trap and into many foolish and
harmful desires, which plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the
root of all evils, and some people in their desire for it have strayed from the faith and have
perceived themselves with many pains.
