October 2014 386-986-4668 President’s Message Well – the Chair Affair is upon us Newsletter for the Flagler County Art League www.FlaglerCountyArtLeague.com and all of you have worked your fingers to the nubs, sanding, painting and creating such fabulous, imaginative works of art! Everyone who comes to the gallery is amazed at your unbelievable ingenuity. We have more than 80 chairs and they are getting ready to roll down to Town Center for the event. However, none of this would have happened without the efforts of Joan and Jim Mangano—her constant work to keep everything moving forward—and Maggie Corder’s organizational skills, along with the contributions of our partners at PCAF and numerous others along the way. [email protected] I would like you to be aware there are key positions on the Board and committees that will be vacated very soon due to a variety of reasons, and the adage of “many hands make light work” is true here at FCAL. If you want to help us keep moving forward, we need your help! Whether it is as part of our financial group, education committee, publicity or other functions, we could use your talents and assistance. Know that we have MANY opportunities to help! Call the office and we will get back to you! Finally – we are grateful for your membership. We know you have to make choices about what you will be involved in and what you choose to support, and we are so very glad you have chosen to support US! Page 6 ‘Arts in Education’ Week Proves Successful Once Again Discover “Arts in Education Week” turned out to be a great program for the second year in a row—lots of participation, lot of the arts—verbal, visual, performance, etc. Among events promoting the visual arts were a tour of the FCAL gallery, with artists at work, and a tour of the Gargiulo Art Foundation’s collection featuring the various Artists of the Year at Daytona State College, Palm Coast campus. To add spice to the mix, the week-long arts in ed project launched with “Art on Wheels,” Sunday September 14. Local Palm Coast and Flagler County artists have been decorating the chairs—approximately 86 in all—for months, donating their time and their creations. Presented by Palm Coast Ford and Daytona Toyota, at Central Park at Town Center, from 6pm to 9pm on Friday, October 3, the evening will include heavy hors d’oeuvres, drinks, entertainment and the live auction. This promises to be a memorable evening. Tickets—your invitations to the event—are $50 per person. On October 4th, all other chairs will be for sale during the International Festival, from 12 noon until 9 p.m. at the Town Center. Profits from all sales will be split between FCAL and the Palm Coast Arts Foundation. If your chair does not sell, you may take it back or donate it to the Art League to be used in our gallery. For all those who have participated in SAVE THE DATE this fundraiser, there will be a “Thank You” reception. (See box.) Buyers who would like a functional conversation piece for seating can expect some great bargains, says FCAL’s PCAF liaison Joan Mangano who helped orchestrate the event and paint some of the chairs herself. Saturday Evening With the Artists - Open Theme By Wendy Berg Roth The second show of FCAL’s new 2014/2015 season is one of our major annual events: “Saturday Evening with the Artists.” This is usually a popular and large show, and we hope to have it sponsored. The theme is open which means artists are at liberty to express themselves however they desire. All mediums are accepted as long as they adhere to the normal guidelines for size, frame, and registration requirements. So, produce your BEST for this show (and for all shows, for that matter) Sponsored shows usually offer larger awards. Harry Messersmith, Deland-based sculptor, will judge. Next Up: We hope you are also preparing for another popular theme show — to debut in November, after the Saturday Evening Show closes—“Walk with the Animals.” Do art of any breathing entity that is NOT human, (birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, etc.). We plan on partnering with the Flagler Humane Society to raise awareness and help as a fundraiser for them. Going Green - “Gone” Discover FCAL’s Going Green Show opened the league’s 2014/15 season with an imaginative palette of green art—either literally green, in the spirit of green i.e. the environment or anything else that brought the word “green” to mind for the artists entering the show which was judged by J.J. Graham, formerly of Hollingsworth and now in his new Bunnell gallery, the Salvo Neoteric Art Project (SNAP). Adding to the environmental theme, the event was catered by Local Fare South, St. Augustine, which offers local farmto-door services direct to household customers. Entrepreneur/owners Laura and Bryant Loeffler donated their delicious homemade hors d’oeuvres for the show. Create Participate Page 9 (L. to r.) A Strong Start For the Inaugural Meeting By Joyce Gatonska We had 14 people for our “inaugural” discussion Thursday, September 11. Everyone really enjoyed the lively discussion and agreed it was a very successful evening. The overall consensus was that the book was a good choice for folks interested in art history and Michelangelo and his work. We are now looking forward to our next meeting on November 13 and the discussion of Priceless: How I Went Undercover to Rescue the World’s Treasures. This book, written by Robert K. Wittman, who founded the FBI’s Art Crime Team, should be a great choice as well. It was described as a “rollicking memoir” in a New York Times review.
