Blueberries: The True Blue Fruit
Blueberries are a colorful, delicious and nutritious fruit. In terms
of acreage harvested, Georgia
ranks 3rd in the U.S. with 6,000
acres. We rank 5th with 26 million
lbs. in utilized production behind
Michigan, New Jersey, Oregon,
and North Carolina, according to
a USDA report. Blueberries are
native to North America and are
the only truly blue foods on earth.
Their nutrient value includes vitamins A and C, antioxidants, folic
acid, ellagic acid and dietary fiber.
They can be eaten raw; made into
jams, jellies and juices; or cooked
in foods. Blueberries are harvested
in Georgia from late May through
about mid-July. There are many
pick-your-own operations around
Georgia, but the commercially
grown blueberries are primarily
found in the southern part of the
