Welcome to the October 2014 issue of The Witham Staple.

~1~
Welcome to the October 2014 issue of The Witham Staple.
Gather. As predicted the swallows gathered and migrated, younger family
members gathered with friends old and new at school, college or university, the
harvest is safely gathered in, autumn is gathering pace, leaves will start to gather
on the ground, the dark nights are closing in and earlier each night we draw and
gather the curtains to shut it out. Yes it’s got to that time again another new month
and time to sit down gather our thoughts and read the latest issue to find out what
gatherings are taking place and where you can go to meet up and gather with
friends and neighbours. November is next, but just before you remember,
remember the 5th November! Remember to turn your clocks back an hour as
British summer time ends on Sunday 26th October and for that brief moment that
only comes around every 365 days, you get that satisfactory feeling of an extra
hour in your day to do with what you may. Till we will gather here next month…
We love to receive articles from all corners of the community

THANK YOU
Sue Black would like to thank all members of the St Michaels 200 club for their
continuing support in 2014. Prompt payment of yearly subscriptions has allowed a
donation of £1000 to be made towards the repair and upkeep of St Michael and all
Angels Church Bassingham. Thanks also to those who collected on my behalf.
Kathleen Law. Kath's family would like to thank all those who sent cards and
messages following her sudden death. A large number of friends attended the
crematorium and a total of £222 was sent to Cancer Research UK. Thank you all.

had by all. We would like to thank our live band Ripkord and Magic music disco for
the entertainment and Bassingham village for their support of our event. We hope
to see you and your friends all again next year.

PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT OF 120 HOUSES
ON THURLBY ROAD BASSINGHAM
Some of you will be aware of a proposed development of 120 mixed use
properties on Thurlby Road Bassingham by Gladman Limited. Gladman will not
build any houses, they have been appointed by the landowner to gain planning
permission on what is currently an agricultural field outside of the village curtilage.
The land could then be sold to a developer. There is strong feeling in Bassingham
about this and the potential for any future developments that this may lead to
which may have an adverse effect on Bassingham and the surrounding villages.
If Bassingham continues to grow what affect will it have on our community and its
facilities?
How will this affect YOUR village?
There was an open meeting on 22nd September at The Hammond Hall in
Bassingham to discuss this proposal. Please keep an eye on the Witham Staple
website for updates. If you would like to have your say or find out more about this
development please email [email protected]

RACE NO. ‘28490’ I DID IT!
A very big thank you to everyone who generously support,
sponsored and sent me good wishes. I have done it. The
Great North Run is now on my list of achievements. What
an experience, what a great day. From arriving at the start
line early Sunday morning and being amongst elite athlete,
rd
fellow competitors and fundraisers in this the 33 Great
North Run, where someone amongst us was going to be
the 1 millionth finisher in the events 33 year history gave
you just that little bit more of a tingle. Then there’s the
crowds cheering you all the way along the 13.1 miles and
finally running up the Coast Road in South Shields and
crossing the finish line. It took me 1 hour 37 minutes and 12 seconds. Out of the
field of over 57,000 competing in the events 33rd year I came in 1963rd over all.
Statistically I was the 134th female to finish, the 947th under 34 year old, 76th under
34 year old female and 1st Hubbard of which there were 10… Away from all the
statistics I just have a great sense of pride in my achievement and at the same
time have helped with your support to raise some money for Diabetes UK. Thank
you again to you all and yes believe it or not I may do it again. Cloe Hubbard xx

1st OCTOBER. LINCOLNSHIRE DAY.
Don’t forget to fly the Lincolnshire Flag on this day. This date was chosen as in
1536 the Lincolnshire Rising began in Horncastle called the Pilgrimage of Grace.
This was protesting against the Government’s abolition of Papal Supremacy and
the sacking of churches, monasteries etc. Henry VIII wanted to marry Ann Boleyn
and so made himself head of the church and it is reputed to be when he referred
to our County as “That brute and beastly shire”.

LEARN TO RUN WITH WITHAM RUNNERS
Local running club is affiliated to England Athletics
It’s time to dig out that running kit! After almost four years of successfully
introducing people to running, Witham Runners is pleased to announce that they
are now officially affiliated with England Athletics. To celebrate, the club is
launching a new 8-week Learn to Run course, commencing with an open night on
th
Thursday 9 October at 6.30pm.
Witham Runners was established in October 2010 and slowly developed from a
group of friends into an affiliated running club. Through its growing number of
Coaches and Leaders in Running Fitness, the club has helped runners of all
abilities achieve their aims whatever the distance from 5km to ultra-marathons. If
you have never run before, why not try the club’s latest innovation, an 8 week
introduction to running? Targeted at those who have never run before, or are
returning to running after an extended break, this programme is designed to build
your confidence and your fitness at a sustainable pace. Our experienced leaders
and coaches will be there for you every step of the way to encourage and support
you. As an added bonus, should you decide to join the club at the end of the
course, the cost of the course will be deducted from your joining fee.
Michelle Mortimer, Chair of Witham Runners, said: “We have been running as an
informal group for almost 4 years now, but demand from our members and a
growing responsibility to our community has meant we decided to affiliate to
England Athletics, which brings us insurance, support and access to many
coaching resources, as well as many discounts and opportunities for our athletes.
We have a wealth of experience now in our running leaders and coaches and
have introduced countless people to the benefit of running in an organised group.”
To pre-register for the Learn to Run course, contact Michelle Mortimer on 07789
953 380 or [email protected] The Learn to Run course costs £10 and
successful completers receive a club t-shirt or a discount off the club joining fee.
The club meets every Monday and Thursday at 7pm outside the Co-op in Witham
St Hughs. Mondays are dedicated to training and Thursdays are a run. To find out
more about joining Witham Runners, find them on
Facebook or Twitter @witham_runners

NEWS FROM NK
Pat and Sue your district Councillors updating you…..
The social housing on Torgate Lane Bassingham is progressing well. Many
people have indicated their interest and these dwellings will be allocated to local
people who are registered with the Lincs Homefinder website. We have been
asked what "bidding" entails, it is simply to express an interest in a particular
property when it is advertised, (possibly in October), for consideration. All
applications are listed and prioritised according to circumstances and local
connections. (see page 8 for further details)
Please be aware that the new Local Plan, which is being drafted, is open for
consultation between October 1st and November 11th. It contains proposals for
distribution of growth, settlement hierarchies, jobs, health, green spaces,
sustainability and renewable energy. Please make time to look at it and make your
comments.
50,000 of the resident population of NK are in employment and we employ 7
apprentices. The 3G artificial sports pitch at NK sports centre was opened by the
Chairman of the district Cllr Lance Pennell. He hosted a community football
festival raising funds for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance.
Congratulations go to Cloe Hubbard for completing the Great North Run and
raising funds for Diabetes UK.
Congratulations also to Brant Broughton Parish Council for the innovative idea of
issuing 30mph stickers to be placed on wheelie bins on their Main Street to
encourage drivers to slow down. Let's hope it works!

BASSINGHAM RECORDED MUSIC SOCIETY
Margaret presented her first programme very well and gave us the opportunity of
listening to Paganini Caprice Op1 No24 and comparing how Rachmaninov
created a theme based on Paganini's work. For those interested in comparisons,
the afternoon provided quite a number that included Sanctus by Verdi and Karl
Jenkins, Rondo by Lalo and Prokofiev, Stabat Mater Dolroso by Pergolesi and
Scarlatti. For the second half of the programme Margaret chose two items played
by Andre Rieu and his orchestra and closed the afternoon with Bryn Terfel singing
The Sunset Poem. Our next meeting will be held on
Friday 17th October
with John and Thelma. Please note this is the 3rd Friday and not the 2nd as usual.

What is a Neighbourhood Panel?
Your Neighbourhood Panel consists of local people, and representatives of the
community, who live or work in the area. The panel’s purpose is to identify issues
that are affecting the community taking into account the views of the community.
What does the panel do?
They meet quarterly and assess all the information collected at the meeting and
consider all the issues raised. The panel then agree on neighbourhood policing
priorities to be focused on during the next three month period. The Neighbourhood
Policing Team then adopt a problem solving approach and are encouraged and
empowered to work locally with NKDC and government agencies to address the
priorities set.
Your current priorities set by the Panel for this area are:

Patient Reference Group
If you feel you would like to have some involvement in decisions made by the
practice’s Patient Participation Group but do not have a lot of time to spare to
attend meetings etc, we would like to invite you to participate in our Patient
Reference Group (PRG), this involves patients responding to an occasional short
questionnaire which will be emailed to you in order to help us monitor what our
patients think about the practice. Any feedback received from our Patient
Reference Group Members will be passed to the Patient Participation group.
Information and ideas will be discussed at their meetings and considered for
further action and development.
If you wish to be involved in either of the groups please contact the surgery on
788250 or via the feedback facility on our website www.bassinghamsurgery.co.uk
and let us have your details along with your email address.
Using SystmOnLine
SystmOnLine is a facility within the practice’s clinical computer system that offers
patients the opportunity to order their repeat medication, update their address and
contact details and manage/book GP appointments. If you are interested in
making use of this facility you will need to register by asking at reception for a
username and password. In order for us to comply with rules regarding
confidentiality we cannot post out this information or hand it to anyone other than
yourself, so you must apply in person. Once this is done you can access
SystmOnLine via a link on the practice website.
Text message reminders
If you have a mobile telephone number registered with the practice and you would
be happy to receive text message reminders when you book appointments please
let our receptionists know. Details of your verbal consent will then be added to
your record which will enable automated reminders which will then be sent to your
mobile telephone whenever you book GP and nurse appointments at the surgery.

CHEEKY MONKEYS DAY NURSERY HAVE FUN AND LEARN
We are a home from home nursery based in Newark on Whitfield
Street. Our doors opened for the first time on the 1st September
and we have had a fantastic response from parents looking
around and booking their children in.
We have well qualified experienced staff in all rooms looking after the needs and
development of the children, helping them to be creative, gain confidence and
explore their environment. We have a quiet and peaceful baby room with staff who
have undertaken specialized baby training so they understand their needs, likes
and dislikes. Preschoolers and toddlers have a wonderful free flow area with all
day access to the garden where staff help them to develop and grow.
We have a flexible approach to children’s hours as we understand that not
everyone works in a 9 to 5 job and rota/shift patterns often play a big part in
parents working days.
Please pop in and have a look around the nursery – we would be delighted to
show you around. We are open Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm or visit our website

LINCOLNSHIRE POLICE
HYKEHAM RURAL
Hello to you all, I trust you are well and braced to receive my monthly update! It’s
been a mixed month really, good as the reports of anti-social behaviour have
fallen, but bad because we are still receiving reports of “Theft from vehicles
(TFMV)”, all of which were left open for anyone to take what was inside.
The crime figures really reflect that, with the Rural Villages showing an increase in
49 crimes and North Hykeham Town an increase of 3 crimes. But when you
crunch the figures down to the reports of Burglary and TFMV they read :
Hykeham Rural (Since 1st April 2014). Burglary 5 reports - TFMV 45 reports
North Hykeham Town. Burglary 18 reports - TFMV 31 reports
So you can see the increase is due to the vehicle crime, which is almost all down
to the owners not locking their cars, a factor I have no control over. We have
dropped leaflets in and around the areas I believe would be affected and used
various media outlets to advise the community. On top of this I have deployed
officers out on high visibility patrols, as well as those that have gone out in plain
clothes in unmarked cars. There have been some arrests, but there are still
thieves out there that are attracted to the “Easy pickings”.
Commercial plant machinery theft also saw a slight increase in reports this past
fortnight, but there has been a significant arrest of three males this week believed
responsible for it.
A snap shot of the crime reported since my last report on the 4th August is, for the
rural villages: Doddington – Car stolen on Kennel Lane, Lawn mower stolen on
the same street, North Scarle – Village hall broken into and money taken from
the pool tables, Norton Disney – Trailer stolen, Brant Broughton – Lawnmower
stolen on Mill Lane, Thorpe on the Hill – Garage broken into on Blacksmiths
Lane, TFMV x 2 on Lincoln Lane, Aubourn – Lawn mower stolen on Bassingham
Road, TFMV on Royal Oak Lane, Swinderby – JCB stolen, Thurlby – Cable theft
on Moor Lane, Skellingthorpe – Diesel theft on Lincoln Road
That’s it really on the business front. The teams are now fully up to strength, with
the addition of another PCSO last week, so the set up for your community police
is:

INSURANCE OVERVIEW.
The first reported fire caused by Electronic cigarettes has raised a caution. If you
buy one or use one please be sure to obtain the manufacturers recommended
mains charger. In the case reported a cheap “no brand” charger was used and
this burst into flames overnight causing a fire which spread very quickly. On the
subject of unusual fires beware of wet mice looking for a warm dry place this
winter! I had a claim where a mouse crawled into the compressor compartment at
the back of a refrigerator. This had the usual accumulation of dust, webs and
general dirt collected over several years and the mouse got between the electrical
contacts causing a short which ignited his fur and the detritus, subsequently
lighting up the kitchen curtains and the house. A gentle clean with the vacuum
extension at the rear of fridge and freezer can prevent such incidents. Now is also
a good time to check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms with battery renewal if
appropriate.
The Financial Conduct Authority has raised concerns about “on-line” insurance
sales. They note that the cheapest in not necessarily the best. They also note that
poor information is given by call centre staffs who very often cannot answer
simple questions regarding their products. No point in saving £5 and having to pay
the first £500 of any claim. If you are getting a quote always ask the amount of the
excess, is a loan car provided in the event of a claim, does the cover extend to
include more than Third Party if travelling abroad. Ask all the questions and
beware of unwanted “add-ons”. Better still visit your local broker and obtain a face
to face quote from a specialist who knows more than the information read from a
screen!
Although this area is now said to be the safest place to live from a crime point of
view you can still be even more secure by checking locks, bolts and bars ready for
the longer hours of winter. Get a “close shackle padlock” for your shed or garage
as these areas appear to be most at risk. If you are planning a long stay abroad
this winter, check the “unoccupancy clause” on your house insurance. Cover will
probably be restricted to 30 days. If so, ask for an extension. This will invariably

DOMESDAY BOOK / BOOK FROM WINCHESTER
This has been a recent fascination of mine; I found it interesting to compare the
villages of our parish. Over the centuries the book has been proven to have many
inaccuracies so make of it what you will! If nothing else the Lords names are
interesting, they seem to epitomise that ‘middle earth’ feel of the time!
Diane Swales
Commissioned after the Norman conquest of 1066 by William, formerly Duke of
Normandy, now the first Norman King of England. It is fascinating to note the
change of names from Anglo-Saxon to French. The lives of the people must have
changed dramatically with the arrival of the French. Nothing changes! William
used the information to assess and record the fiscal rights of the king. Royal
officers were sent out to collect information.
The book is an assessment and record of land, resources, landholders, tenants,
free men, villagers, slaves, animals, fish ponds, bees, churches, castles etc. in
England in 1085. Land was often measured in hides (hides being a measure of
land value, not size), each hide being of a taxable value. Plough teams, this term
is used to determine the taxable amount of land that can be ploughed by a team
of eight oxen.
The books (a large one and a smaller one) give the value of land, before the
conquest and after it. The large book was completed in August 1086 and was the
work of one scribe. The smaller one of East Anglia was unfinished. They were
written in Latin short form. There were 13,418 settlements in the English counties
south of the Scottish border.
From the 12th Century the book was known as Domesday. The people saw its
information, now known to the King, as irreversible, comparing it to the Last
Judgement in the Bible, when the deeds of Christians were placed before God for
judgement.
Next month Diane’s article will continue with information on our village entries.
