About the Seminar
Cryptogams comprise a considerable share of the world
plant diversity. The group, albeit a traditional nomenclature, includes the algae, fungi,
lichens, liverworts, hornworts,
mosses and pteridophytes.
Exploring the world of cryptogams often poses challenge to
our professed understanding
and conventional perceptions,
nevertheless paving the way for comprehending a world of
immense beauty and wonder. The cryptogams are not only
credited with the attribute of exquisiteness but also an enormity in terms of diversity. The incredible diversity and importance of the cryptogams in different ecosystems and planetary
functions has surprisingly not enthused much interest in
these varied groups of organisms, especially in our part of the
world and many species remain yet to be discovered and
named.
The Seminar, “Amazing Cryptogams-Learning to Know” has
been conceptualized with the above scenario in mind. This is
also an extension of an annual endeavour of the ‘Probir Chatterjee Research Foundation’ - an academic organization that
strives to popularize knowledge and understanding of cryptogams among students, researchers and young teachers of
plant sciences and allied subjects and also promote research
on the same, inter-alia.
among others, which contribute in a
large way towards advancement of
knowledge in Cryptogamic Botany. The
Department also houses a ‘Conservation
Garden’ exclusively for Cryptogamic
flora. Thus, the students, researchers
and faculty members of the Department
look forward to an extremely successful
Seminar that enriches and establishes
new avenues for future coordination
with others with similar interests.
