On Saturday, Oct. 11, the Panthers were defeated by NJIT 2-1 in overtime in
GSU’s first conference match in nearly two years. Georgia State opened the
scoring in the 42nd minute when Stephen McGill scored with a chip from 40
yards out. He won the ball back in midfield and noticed the goalkeeper off his
line, so he fired a shot that went over the keeper’s head and into the back of the
net. The Highlanders tied the match 1-1 in the 65th minute and it remained tied
after 90 minutes. Then in the third minute of overtime, NJIT scored to clinch the
2-1 come-from-behind victory.

The Mountaineers are 4-5-3 overall and 0-0-2 in conference play. Last time
out, Appalachian State battled Howard to a 2-2 double-overtime draw on
Saturday, Oct. 11 in Washington, D.C. Howard had a 1-0 advantage at the
break after scoring in the 41st minute. The Mountaineers then scored in the
56th and 58th minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Appalachian State held that lead
until the 85th minute when Howard found the back of the net to tie the match
and force overtime. Previously, the Mountaineers defeated Jacksonville 2-1 on
Wednesday, Oct. 8 in Boone, N.C.
• Appalachian State is 2-1 at home this season.
• The Panthers and Mountaineers have faced off five times before.
• Last season, GSU picked up a 2-1 win at home on Oct. 26.
• Appalachian State leads the all-time series with three wins to two.
• Stanley Broaden leads the Mountaineers with 12 points on six goals.

Last time out, Georgia State was defeated by No. 15 North Carolina 4-0 on
Tuesday, Oct. 14 in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tar Heels opened the scoring in the 27th
minute when Andy Craven beat CJ Cochran with a shot into the bottom-left
corner. Nyambi Jabang then scored a pair of goals before halftime to extend
North Carolina’s lead to 3-0 after 45 minutes. The Tar Heels had opportunities
to increase their advantage but were three times denied by Cochran. North
Carolina finally bagged a fourth in the 89th minute to cap the 4-0 scoreline.

On the Horizon…
Offensive Outburst...
After the match against the Mountaineers, the Panthers return to Atlanta to
host Jacksonville on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the GSU
Soccer Complex. The Dolphins are 3-8 overall this season, including an 0-2
record in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
On Saturday, Sept. 13, Georgia State defeated North Florida for the Panthers’
first victory of the season. GSU’s four goals scored is the most by the Panthers
since Oct. 16, 2011 in a 4-2 win over Drexel. The match was tied 1-1 at halftime
but Georgia State scored three goals over five minutes in the second half to
cruise to the easy victory.
• Jad Elkhalil found the back of the net for his first career goal and the matchwinner in the 71st minute.
• Aaron Jones then scored off a free kick in the 73rd minute to extend the lead.
• Amiri Abraham capped the evening with an unbelievable solo effort. He
dribbled past four defenders before firing the ball over the keeper’s head and
into the top right corner.
Last time out, Jacksonville was defeated by Appalachian State 2-1 in Boone,
N.C. The Mountaineers held a 1-0 lead at the half after scoring in the 15th
minute. The Dolphins tied it 1-1 in the 57th minute but gave up a matchwinner in the 89th minute to give Appalachian State the 2-1 victory. The loss
was Jacksonville’s third in a row and the team will look to end the streak against
North Kentucky at home on Saturday, Oct. 18.
• The Dolphins are 0-3 on the road this season.
• This will be the 23rd all-time meeting between GSU and Jacksonville.
• The Dolphins hold an 11-9 edge in series wins and the teams have played to
a pair of draws.
• Ejiroghene Mrabure is first for Jacksonville with eight points on a team-high
three goals scored. He is also tied for second with two assists.
• Rijad Kobiljar has recorded a team-high four assists and is tied for second
with six points.
Family Matters...
The Georgia State men’s soccer team has one set of siblings on the team: the
Elkhalil brothers.
• Ali and Jad were both born in the United States but there parents are natives
of Beirut, Lebanon.
• Their family settled in the Atlanta area and the brothers attended Walton
High School in Marietta, Ga.
• Ali, a senior midfielder and forward, is tied for the team lead with one goal
scored and he has appeared as a substitute in five of six matches this season.
• Jad has started all six matches at forward this season and is also tied for the
team lead with one goal.
Cochran and McGill Sweep Weekly Awards...
Seniors CJ Cochran and Stephen McGill swept the Sun Belt’s weekly awards on
Sept. 30. Cochran was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week and McGill
received Sun Belt Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors after an outstanding
3-1 win over regionally-ranked Lipscomb Friday, Sept. 26.
• Cochran made three saves on 14 total shots faced to help the Panthers extend
their winning streak to four matches.
• Over Georgia State’s four-match win streak, Cochran has allowed only three
goals and registered 11 saves.
• McGill picked up his first Sun Belt weekly award after leading the Panthers
with a goal and an assist in the win over the No. 5 team in the southeast
region.
• McGill is tied with three others for the team lead with four points. He also
has a team-high two assists and is one of eight Panthers to find the back of
the net this season.
Junior forward Andy Anglade plays the same sport at the same school as his
younger sister Taina Anglade. She is also a forward and they are one of two sets
of brother and sister who play soccer at the same school in the Sun Belt (Walker
and Logan White at Appalachian State).
On the Road Again...
The Panthers open the season with nine of their first 12 matches on the road,
including six of their first eight. GSU kicked off the 2014 season with three
straight road matches, before hosting North Florida and Presbyterian.
• After picking up a 2-1 win over UNCG on Sept. 20, GSU continued its current
three-match road trip in Nashville. against Lipscomb on Sept. 26 and the
Panthers defeated the Bison 3-1
• On Sept. 30, GSU fell to South Carolina 2-1 in overtime in Columbia, S.C.
• After falling at home to Belmont 2-0 on Oct. 7, the Panthers began another
three-match road trip.
• First GSU fell in overtime to NJIT in the team’s Sun Belt oepener.
• After falling to No. 15 North Carolina on Oct. 14, GSU faces Appalachian State
on Oct. 18 before returning home to host Jacksonville on Oct. 21.

Return to the Sun Belt...
For the first time in two years, GSU will complete for a conference title and an
automatic bid to the NCAA tournament in 2014.
• Last season the Panthers competed as a Division I independent after
spending the previous eight years in the Colonial Athletic Association.
• Prior to to that Georgia State was a member of the Trans-Atlantic Athletic
Conference/Atlantic Sun Conference for 22 years.
• During that time GSU won five conference titles and appeared in two NCAA
play-in matches.
Winning Ways...
The Panthers had won four-straight matches before falling to South Carolina
2-1 in overtime on Sept. 30. GSU opened the season by dropping its first three
contests of 2014.
• During the streak, Georgia State outscored its opponents 10-3 after failing to
score a goal in the team’s first three matches.
• Seven different Panthers have scored in the four contests.

Georgia State was a member of the Sun Belt Conference from 1976-1980 when
men’s soccer was a sponsored sport. The Panthers left the conference before the
1981 season before joining the TAAC in 1982.

2013 Late Season Success...
GSU finished the 2013 season by winning nine of its last 14 matches, including
a 1-1 draw at No. 6 Washington and a 2-0 win over No. 9 Furman in Atlanta.
• The Panthers also faced No. 17 North Carolina on the road to set a school
record for most ranked opponents faced in a single season.
2013 Honors and Awards...
Amiri Abraham was named Independent Freshman of the Year by College Sports
Madness in 2013 after leading Georgia State with six goals and 14 points. He
was also tied for third with two assists.
• Abraham was joined on the College Sports Madness All-Independent first
team by Stephen McGill, who was second with 11 points.
• The Panthers also placed a pair of defender, Conor Acheson and Aaron Jones,
on the all-independent second team.
• Jones led the team with five assists as a true freshman and Acheson finished
the season with one goal and two assists as a center-back.
GSU also had four different players receive five College Sports Madness AllIndepedent Player-of-the-Week awards.
• Goalkeeper CJ Cochran won the award on Sept. 23 after helping the Panthers
to a 1-1 double overtime draw at No. 6 Washington.
• Jones picked up his honor on Sept. 30 after he scored his first career goal and
recorded his first career assist in a 2-1 win over Lipscomb.
• McGill picked up back-to-back awards on Oct. 7 and Oct. 14. He scored three
goals and registered one assist in three straight Panther wins.
• Abraham grabbed the last award on Oct. 28 after he scored both goals in
Georgia State’s 2-0 win over No. 9 Furman at home.
