“Communicating School Redesign”
Harwood Union is one of the six Vermont schools participating in the course,
“Communicating School Redesign. We have enrolled 3 adult participants –
Amy Rex, Ellen Berrings and Marcus Grace and 4 student participants – Asah
Whalen, Cole Lavoie, Sophia Minter, and Alexa Widschwenter.
The purpose of this course is to introduce an approach to communications
called “strategic framing” that is grounded in research about how Americans—
adults and youth—think about education.
Basic conceptual frameworks for 1) strategic framing, 2) responsive facilitation
and 3) youth-adult partnerships will be explored through both didactic and
experiential means. The primary content focus will be effectively
communicating the Vermont Agency of Education’s Act 77 priority areas
(personalized learning plans and flexible pathways), along with proficiencybased graduation requirements.
Our first assignment is to conduct research; that is to collect quantitative and
qualitative data that will inform our strategic frame. To this end, adult –
student teams will be conducting interviews with a variety of stakeholders and
giving a survey to all faculty/staff, students and members of the community
over the next month. Stay tuned for more information about how you can
participate in the survey.

Harwood Union Middle and High School is very proud to announce that
Stefanie Weigand has received the “Outstanding New Music Teacher of
the Year” Award. While attending the Vermont Music Teachers’
Conference at Lake Morey last weekend, Stefanie was surprised to hear
her name called during the presentation of awards. Stefanie is
undoubtedly a most deserving candidate. Her expertise and dedication to
Harwood students as exemplified through her classroom instruction and
the support she provides for those pursuing musical opportunities is
unprecedented. Congratulations Stefanie.
