TUESDAY GROUP
We all enjoyed our
Summer
Lunch
in
August. As usual our
members provided some
delicious food, and the
sweets were outstanding,
also the swap shop went
well. Our September
meeting
was
very
interesting,
Pauline
Manson gave a talk about
the
East
Anglian
Children's Hospice, which
has
provided
such
special care for sick
children, their parents
and siblings. Now a new
building is planned, sited
at Framlingham Pigot, off
the A47, so much easier
to get to than the
Quidenham site.
The
plans
have
been
approved and everyone
is very pleased that this
project will go ahead. Our
Speaker for October is
Rachel Welsh, a qualified
homeopath, who will be
telling us about the
history of homeopathy
and also how it can affect
us when we are being treated.
This should be a very interesting
and useful afternoon, visitors
are welcome to come along.
In November we will be having a
craft afternoon with Pam Mead.
Our members enjoy this sort of
afternoon, chatting and cutting
and gluing, we will also be
judging the entries for the Pearl
Millar Cup competition which
this year will be a photograph of
yourself when a child.

You all missed a very good
night on the 16th August BBQ.
Burgers and sausages were
included to accompany being
entertained by the Dave Drain
Band. Sixty people turned up
which just about left room for
dancing. This four piece band is
very popular and has been
booked again for the 16th
December; entrance fee will
include a cold buffet. A big
thank you to Janet and Greg for
cooking the food.
“Annie”
a
very
popular
entertainer from Worlingworth

of music and songs for
the dance night on the 6th

The Old Kings Head - Brockdish
What a wonderful welcome we have had to the village of Brockdish. So
many of you have stopped to introduce yourselves and say “Hello”,
which has made our move from the distant lands of rainy Needham a
lot easier. We (i.e. myself Jonathan, my wife Vicky and two daughters
Flo and May) bought the Old Kings Head (OKH) on 16th July 2014 with
the aim of turning this beautiful old 14th century building back into its
former glory. Having now removed most of the 1970’s, 80’s, 90’s,
2000’s and 10’s odds and sods (4 skips to date!) we are able to slowly
renovate and decorate the OKH into a comfortable place for people to
come and enjoy.
We are aiming to be open at the end of this November and with a fair
wind and fingers crossed we should get there. Currently we are
installing a new heating system so the many people that have told us
how cold it was will now be able to come and enjoy a meal and a drink
in warm comfort.
We have rebuilt the main bar with a beautiful oak top which I have
made from old wood harvested 30 years ago from a Needham oak tree.
My previous neighbour, Dennis, donated this as he was going to build a
large kitchen table but thankfully has never quite had the time to do it;
so “Thank you Dennis” and the OKH is the perfect place for you to
come and enjoy your kitchen table.
We are also bringing coffee to the OKH with a 3 group CMA espresso
machine, so we hope to be the perfect meeting point for you to come
and meet friends and family for a cappuccino, espresso, latte and a
chat. I will be running the kitchen where we will be making all of our
food on the premises, baking both bread and cakes daily and using
some of the great ingredients that we have around our fields and
shores. We are very lucky to have some great large and micro
breweries in this area and we plan to experiment and try most of them.
We will have 4 cask pumps, some small estate wines served by the
glass at affordable prices and a selection of good Gins & Vodkas,
Whiskies & Malts so there should be something for everyone. We really
hope to see you all at some point when we have opened. If you would
like to have a look at our website there are some pictures of our journey
so far www.kingsheadbrockdish.co.uk - or try following us on Twitter at
@okhbrockdish.
We plan to open at the end of this November when we look forward to
welcoming you in your local where you can enjoy good food, good beer.

Vehicles Speeding
At the last meeting concerns
were raised regarding the
number of HGVs travelling
through the village - this is a
mutual concern for Brockdish
and Needham, and Cllrs
Christine MacKenzie (Chair)
and Peter Josling attended
Needham PC meeting on
28th July 2014 regarding this
matter. It was decided to ask
HLC Needham to place a
larger direction sign on the
A143 and for members of the
public to identify HGVs ie
company name, registration
plate number with date and
time to provide evidence for
action.
Vehicles speeding through
the village is still an issue and
again evidence is required for
further action, ie date, time,
registration plate number of
vehicle concerned. There is
a Speed Awareness Machine
available but we would like
volunteers to operate this
equipment, please telephone
the Clerk if you are able to
help.

School
The new school year has begun with us welcoming children in
Reception, Year 4 and Year 6. We wish them, and all our children, a
happy and positive year of learning.
In the Happy Owls’ class (infants) dinosaurs are already invading
the landscape, and I have heard rumours of a mother dinosaur
looking for somewhere to lay her eggs! We will see how well the
children can look after them. A visit to Dinosaur World and fossils in
the school swamp will follow. The children have made dinosaurs
and written instructions so that Mrs Bellars can make one too.
In the Kingfisher class (juniors) they are exploring outer space and I
am told that aliens could be landing! Poetry, stories and factual
writing across the curriculum will support the children’s
understanding of our solar system and encourage imaginative
writing.

Notes on the History of
Brockdish and Thorpe
Abbotts
First,
since
we
are
commemorating the outbreak
of the Great War 100 years
ago this year it seems fitting to
remember one of our own,
and this time not one of the
soldiers who never returned,
but one brave nurse, who is
not named on our village war
memorials but whom we
should surely remember with
pride.
Since
first
moving
to
Brockdish in 1976, I have
been interested in the history
of my home, the Grange,
which from the date above the
porch (1676) had to be at
least three hundred years old
and probably older, because
inside the brick outer skin
there is an ancient timber
framed building. But it was
only after retiring that I had
the time to devote to real
research, although I still have
to fit research round work.
And of course I couldn’t just
confine my curiosity to the
house; inevitably ‘our’ families
could only be understood as
part of the wider village
community in rural south
Norfolk and the Waveney
Valley. So every issue of the
Mardler for the next year or so
I’m going to write briefly about
something from my history
ragbag and I’ll be going back
to Roman times, zooming
through the medieval years
and the upheavals of plague
and war right up to the
Second World War. If there is
a period or topic you’d like to
hear about do let me know.
(And any corrections will be
especially welcome!).
Nurse Mary Rodwell.
On November 17th 1915
shortly after midday the
hospital ship HMS Anglia, en
route from Calais to Dover, hit
a mine laid by a German U
boat. The Anglia sank within
15 minutes.
14
Among the 134 people who
lost their lives that day was
nursing sister Mary Rodwell of
the

Alexandra’s

whose
family lived in Brockdish.
Freedom League (WFL). The
WFL was a breakaway group
from the Women's Social and
Political Union (WSPU), the
leading militant organisation
campaigning for universal
women’s suffrage. The WFL
was a progressive, more
working class group, who felt
the issues facing working
women were broader than just
the vote. The WFL opposed
vandalism and the arson
campaigns of the WSPU but
were willing to break the law
in furtherance of "Votes for
Women" through direct action.
Over 100 of its members went
to jail for direct action
demonstrations and refusing
to pay taxes.
Mary was an unusual woman:
a
staunch
feminist,
a
dedicated nurse and a tragic
loss for her friends and family.
Born in Brockdish, on 7th
June, 1874 the daughter of
John and Mary Rodwell, who
lived in the Street, Mary and
her younger sister Laura
seem to have grown up
mainly with their grandparents
in the village of Oakley on the
Suffolk side of the county
border. Grandfather Daniel
was a ‘drugman’, that is, a
chemist and might have had
more resources than Mary’s
own parents, who were trying
to support their five other
children. Mary’s Mother died
in 1887 when the youngest
child Jane was only four.
When war broke out Mary
Rodwell
volunteered
for
foreign service, working on
hospital trains from February
to May 1915, then joining
HMS Anglia, which was being
used as an auxiliary hospital
ship. The day she was mined,
The Anglia was returning to
Dover from Calais where she
had loaded 390 wounded
military personnel all from the
Front Line of the war in
France. 166 were cot cases,
mostly servicemen who had
lost limbs. Mary’s work was to
nurse the cot cases, housed
on the lower deck. The last
the Matron of the ship saw of
Mary Rodwell was shortly
In 1891 at the age of 17, Mary
moved south to live with her
uncle and aunt in Upper
Norwood, south London and
from 1901 to 1904 she trained
as a nurse at Hendon
Infirmary.

The explosion was sudden
and immediately catastrophic.
The explosion and sinking
was witnessed by the nearby
cargo ship the Lusitania, (also
sunk by a mine not long after),
which immediately sent two
boats to rescue survivors.
Those on the lower deck had
no chance of rescue.

suggesting Mary as a starter
topic. If you are interested in

Mary Rodwell’s name appears
on the war memorial in
Ditchingham because her
family moved there from
Brockdish during the war. A
memorial plaque at Colindale
hospital to nurses killed in the
war, reminds nurses "who
come after, of their courage
self abnegation and devotion
to duty when the hour of trial
came".

U3A News
The highlight of this coming autumn for Harleston U3A will be the
formation of a “Singing For Fun” group. We are delighted to have
persuaded Harleston resident, Stella Brownsea, to take on the
musical direction of the singers. Stella brings enthusiasm, energy,
expertise and a conviction that participation in music making is for
everyone!
Our aim is to be as inclusive as possible. (Yes you - the cowering
individual who has been saying since school days “I really can’t sing
at all!” as well as those who consider themselves “Not too bad”). We
intend to include a wide range of songs and styles.
Call Judith on 01379 852123 to find out what U3A can offer you.
Enjoy a “without commitment taster session” for the singing or any
other group. The annual fee of £16.00 covers all of the interest
groups available. Remember U3A responds to the wishes and
needs of its membership.

All Saints Church News
As September arrives so does Peter Frizzell to put the church
yard to bed for the year. So all that is left for the team is dealing
with the autumn flush and a bit of a tidy up.
The Church has been open at the weekends over the summer
time as well as the Summer Trail week for which we had bought
a stamp for those visiting on the trail. Not forgetting of course the
Church Cycle ride when we had a few additional visitors. It was
nice to see the number who commented in our visitors book.
During August we had a very successful Messy Church
organised by Mary Alderton which proved a nice get together for
both youngsters as well as parents.
So what’s coming up?
12th October Harvest Celebration Service at All Saints 4.00pm.
26 October: 100th Bomb Group at Thorpe Abbotts Then and
Now. An illustrated talk by Ron Batley and Richard Gibson
together with Afternoon Tea in the Village Hall, commencing
2.30pm Tickets £6 from Chris MacDonald 669116.
2nd November Baptism at All Saints.
8th November. Messy Church in the Village Hall on a Fireworks
theme 2-4pm. Details from Mary Alderton.
22nd November. The Annual Race Night. Held in the Village Hall
this will be our third, generously supported by Shadwell Stud and
local business. It has always proved to be a full on fun evening
with few leaving without at least one prize, normal bar will be on
together with a half time light supper. First race, the Abbotts
Handicap at 7.30pm. Very much a date for your diaries! Further
details and tickets at £5 from Simon on 668132.
So a busy time coming up for the PCC, oh yes Christmas is just
around the corner!

Ramblings From The Rectory
October for me means Harvest Festivals (Brockdish at 9.30am
on 5th October - Thorpe Abbots at 4pm on 12th October). It's
the time when all sorts of good things make our school and
churches bright and cheerful. It's a time to be thankful for all
the simple blessings that make life possible especially good
food, and drink. We also remember to give thanks for those
who produce our food, especially our local farmers. There are
so many good things for me to enjoy that I for one often take
them for granted. But then I think of Foodbank, and of all those
who need its support. We support Foodback all through the
year but at Harvest School and Church will be supporting the
Emmaus Project at Ditchingham – Partly because they can
take fresh produce (which Foodbank can't use) and partly
because we want to help as many local people as possible.
If you've never heard of the Emmaus Project it 'provides a
home and meaningful work in order to help people to move on
from homelessness.' To pay for themselves they have a shop
where they sell second-hand refurbished furniture and much,
much more. They also run a cafe. If you've never visited the
Emmaus Project then you've missed a treat. They're open
Tues to Sat 10.00am - 4.30pm on Belsey Bridge Road,
Ditchingham

So in October I'll be celebrating all the good things that God
gives and finding ways to share them with more people. But in
November I start to become more reflective. On 2 nd November
(All Souls) anyone who has lost someone close to them is
invited to special services to give thanks for those lives, and to
receive hope and comfort in our loss. There are 2 services this
year both at 4.30pm, one at St. Andrew's Scole and one at St.
John's Harleston – everyone is welcome.
This reflective theme continues with Remembrance Sunday
(9th November). That day the cost of war, and the horrors that
can be in this world, come into Church. We don't pretend that
all is great in the world but we do remember those who have
27
been lost, commit ourselves to support those who are hurting,
and hope for a better future. Join us at Thorpe Abbotts' Church
at 9.30am or at Brockdish Church at 3pm.
November then ends with getting ready for the hectic fun of
Christmas: A little brightness and hope to come, given through
the simple miracle of a birth.
God bless,
Nigel.
Remembrance Sunday.
This always falls on the second Sunday in
November, this year the 9th. It is the day
traditionally put aside to remember all those
who have given their lives for the peace and
freedom we enjoy today. On this day people
across the nation pause to reflect on the
sacrifices made by our Service men and
women. Every poppy helps us to support the
British Armed Forces past and present, and
their families.
Please give generously and wear your poppy with pride.
