Sunday, October 19
Yes, we joke about our government and it
8:30 & 11:00 Worship
certainly could be better, but I don’t think we’d
9:30 Tailgate Brunch, FLC
trade it for any other at this point. No, rendering
No Children’s Sunday School unto Caesar is not a problem for most of us. But
3:00 Brass Rehearsal
for many, rendering unto God is a tremendous

spiritual problem.
9:15 Naomi Circle, Room A
A recent survey of members of a leading
6:00 Finance Committee, Room B denomination showed that among members who
7:00 Administrative Council,
had dropped out of church, the number one
Room B
complaint was that the church talked about money
Tuesday, October 21
too much. Now, some of that was rationalization,
6:30 Thread Angels
to be sure. But it is true that giving to God and the
7:00 Miriam Circle, Room B
work of Christ in the world is a pretty low priority
Wednesday, October 22
for many. And I think that’s true for two reasons.
11:00 WWEC, Room B
First, as a culture we are becoming increasingly
5:00 Wednesday Nite Bites
more materialistic. It’s difficult to make payments
Carter Hulinsky serving Irish Stew on all the playthings people must have these days

and still give 10 percent to God. We’re like the
6:00 Glory Ringers
little boy who was given two quarters, one for
6:00 Middle School Youth Group Sunday School and one for an ice cream cone.
6:15 Children’s Choir
Walking along the street one of the coins slipped

into the drain below. The little boy raised his face

toward heaven and said with genuine sorrow,

“Well, God, there goes your quarter.” Think about

it. We are increasingly materialistic.

Trunk or Treat?
The reason for the question mark is that no one has signed up!
Please let me know by October 20 if you would like to
decorate a trunk so I can decide if we will have Trunk or Treat
this year. To be held in the parking lot at the same time as the Fall Carnival,
Trunk or Treat is free.
The Fall Carnival will go on in the Family Life Center as planned on Friday,
October 24, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. We will have a bouncy house, balloon
animals, games, and lots of fun! Cost for the carnival is $5 per child or $15 per
family. Pizza will be served for $1 a slice and pop for $.50 a can.
Donations of individually wrapped candy and 2 liters of pop are needed for
this event. Please bring any donations to the office. Thanks for your support!
Sunday School Teachers Needed! We are still looking for 2 part time
teachers for pre-school and 5th grade. Please let me know if you are interested.

Thank You!
A big thank you to everyone that helped make the recent UMW rummage sale
such a success. We are so grateful for the volunteers that helped sort and price
items, fixed the lunch, prepared items for the bake sale, donated items for the
sale, helped during the sale, and came to purchase items. We were able to
collect approximately $5000 that will be used in mission projects. In addition,
we were able to furnish items for use in both local and international mission
efforts. Your generosity is warmly appreciated.
-UMW Members
Thank you to all the youth that participated in the October 12, Children’s Sabbath, worship services. It was
great to see so many helpers.

Welcome, New Members!
Keenan and Becky Henning will be joining on October 19. Keenan was born and raised in Crete, NE. He
is an avid sports fan, especially the Kansas City Royals. He also enjoys hunting and being outdoors, riding
his bike, and playing basketball and softball. Keenan is currently working for Brester Construction. Becky
grew up in Callaway, NE, with 5 siblings ranging in age from 16 to 44. Becky attended Doane College for
elementary education and special education, earning her Bachelor’s and Masters degrees. She currently
teaches 6th grade special education at Park Middle School. Keenan and Becky were married March 3,
2014, and welcomed their daughter, Kamden, on July 22. They love watching Kamden grow and learn, as
well as spoiling their 2 dogs. Welcome, Keenan, Becky, and Kamden!
Mike Kreifels, who has lived in Lincoln his whole life, will be joining on October 19. He and his wife,
Lanette, have 3 children. Austin and Amber Novotny were married at CUMC, and have a son, Keegan.
Keegan comes to Christ Academy for childcare, along with his cousin, Adilyn, daughter of Skyler
Novotny. Their youngest son, Nolan Kreifels, is a freshman at UNL. As Mike has gotten older, he has
realized that family and faith have become the most important parts of his life. He has worked at Honda of
Lincoln for 23 years. Mike also enjoys attending all Husker sports as well as coaching midget football
when he can. He lives across the street from CUMC, so he looks forward to being here often, knowing
there would have to be a lot of snow to miss a Sunday worship. Welcome, Mike!
Patrick and Vickie Neilly joined October 12, and first became involved with CUMC when Drake and
Maddox began attending Christ Academy in the summer of 2013. Living in the neighborhood, coming here
for daycare and church is great—they can just walk over! Patrick teaches 6th grade math at Dawes Middle
School, and is head wrestling coach at Lincoln Northeast High School. He also has he own photography
business. (You can find out more at neillyphotography.com). Vickie teaches 1st grade at Riley Elementary.
Drake and Maddox are 3 years old, and were baptized at CUMC this summer on their 3rd birthday.
Welcome, Patrick, Vickie, Drake, and Maddox!
Amber Trowbridge, who is a registered dental hygienist working for Drs. Michael and Brion Dalton at
Lincoln Dental Associates, joined October 12. Amber will be getting married to Chris Duey on October
25, and they are expecting a baby in late March. Amber is originally from Page, NE, and was raised in the
Methodist Church there. Amber is the VP of the Lincoln Dental Hygiene Association, and Amber first
came to CUMC for meetings of this group. She is also president of her Toastmaster club—Sunrise. Amber
enjoys taking long walks, is interested in the church choir, and has been learning how to use her mother’s
sewing machine. Welcome, Amber!
Giving Thanks, Giving Food
There are thousands of people in poverty in Lincoln; in fact, 1 of
every 5 Lincoln children below age 19 lives in a household where they
often face bleak choices: Buy food or pay bills? Buy food or go to the doctor? Buy food or pay the rent?
The Center for People in Need is asking for help to put nutritious food on their tables this Thanksgiving
and all year. Every $10 you contribute will provide a family of four with enough food to make a special
holiday meal.
You can donate by writing a check to CUMC and notating “CFPIN Thanksgiving” in the memo line, by
mailing a donation with “Giving ThanksGiving Food” on the memo line directly to Center for People in
Need (3901 N. 27th St., Lincoln, NE 68521), or by donating online at www.centerforpeopleinneed.org.
Your generosity makes life better for Lincoln’s most needy families, and that makes Lincoln a better
place to live for all of us. Thank you so much!
