As the temperatures have rapidly dropped we have been fortunate to benefit from low AQI and a resumption of our normal sports training and match programme. We hope that it keeps with us a while longer. This is a month of dressing up, with the ‘character dress-up day’ today and ‘pink day’ a little later in the month. It is always pleasing to see how enthusiastically students approach these days, although we are aware that they are sometimes a little work for parents. As you are all aware, we are communicating a lot this year about our new learning platform, ManageBac. Blogs and the website have, up to now, provided our online portals but ManageBac offers many different school uses. Since we decided to move down this road, Secondary and Elementary schools have developed different plans for its introduction. While Elementary teachers are working at developing their ManageBac presence, they will be maintaining blogs as their main communication tool for the foreseeable future, while introducing ManageBac as a curricular and reporting tool during this semester. In Secondary school, we have been placing our units on ManageBac in each subject area. This has allowed materials, including assignments, to be communicated to students. The calendar helps them to keep track of their work in different subjects. We brought students from Grade 9-12 onto the platform in August and Grades 6-8 began on their return from Week Without Walls. Today, Secondary parents will be invited to log in to ManageBac for the first time. We have explained to all parties that this is a ‘soft opening.’ Last week, at the Secondary principal-parent meeting, I demonstrated how the interface would look, and pointed out the Parent Guide on the right of the screen. The easiest way to find your way around the site is to ask your child to help you! We will, however, provide an opportunity for parents to visit the school and get advice or make comments after the parent-teacher-student conferences. Diwali also known as the “festival of lights”, is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn every year.Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs to mark historical events, stories or myths, but they all spiritually mark the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, hope over despair. ld wor is an Thursday - October 23, 2014 Indian (Hindu) Diwali/Deepavali IST Upcoming World Celebration Dates next week sc ho ol ac Elementary parents should continue to access the blogs to find out what is going on in the grade programme. For Secondary parents, the blogs will become less of a focus as ManageBac is phased in. Secondary and teachers may continue to use blogs as a teaching tool in some subjects. y b Secondary parents should look out for my email with a more detailed explanation of d te di ManageBac expectations in secondary school. e r c T H E Friday 17 October 2014 BLAZE W e e k l y Weishan South Road, Shuanggang, Jinnan District Tianjin 300350 P.R.China Tel: 86 22 28592001 Fax: 86 22 28592007 Email: [email protected] www.istianjin.org Working Learning Acting TOGETHER The UN committee has been very busy making preparations for UN Day on Wednesday 22nd October. You will remember that the theme is international mindedness with the slogan ‘LOOK OUT!’ I have completed auditions of student-led groups in the performance and have asked adult organisers to take responsibility for the quality of their national groups. We can promise a varied and entertaining performance commencing at 9.05 in the theatre. Before that, there is the ‘parade of nations’ with students dressed in clothes representing their cultures. This starts outside the Director’s office shortly after 8.30 and parents of younger children are welcome to walk with the students- in costume of course! A reminder that we do not use national flags for these occasions! After a period of Internationally-related learning activities in school, students move to the lunch provided so generously by the parents. I know that the PFO has been working hard to organise this and we thank everyone involved. The final event of the day is the school photograph, celebrating our 20th anniversary. The following week we have the parent-teacher conferences on 29th and 30th so look out for communications from school about those. As usual, a very busy but productive learning environment! The final arrangements for the PFO UN Day lunch are now in place. Upon arrival Wednesday morning we ask that parents or students bring in their two dishes and drop them off at either the main entrance of the Elementary Building (in front of principal's office). A PFO Committee member will be at those locations to receive your food. Otherwise, you may bring in your dishes anytime during that morning before 11:00am and take them directly to the 2-5 Playroom where the lunch will be served. Please label all pans/trays/bowls with your child's full name and grade so that they may be easily located after the lunch. Also, please note that we will not be able to clean any items, but we can keep any remaining items in the PFO room for you to retrieve after the lunch. Also, please be sure to bring along any special serving utensils if necessary. Remember to label these as well! With your dishes, please include 2 cards (one for each dish) with the following information: NAME OF DISH: COUNTRY: MEAT OR VEGETARIAN MAIN INGREDIENTS, e.g. pork, milk, wheat, eggs, peanuts/nuts The PFO will provide these cards and send them home with your child in their black folder by the end of this week. If you prefer to create your own cards, certainly feel free to do so. *** We are in need of volunteers to help serve the lunch from 11:00am – 1:30pm. If you would be willing to help at this time, please email your Community Liaison. Thank you very much!! Thank you so much for your assistance and support!
