Throughout the week we have enjoyed all manner of things Chinese, and today’s culminating activities, the lion dances and temple fair, were a fitting way in which to bring the Year of the Horse to end and to welcome in the Year of the Sheep. Thank you to all of the parents who supported events throughout the week, and special thanks to our Chinese faculty and staff for their efforts in sharing and celebrating this special time of year with our community. Today the school completed and signed off on its CIS/WASC/IB Accreditation Self-Study Report, an 18 month long self-audit of all facets of our school’s operations and programmes. The process required that the school inquire into, report upon, and finally rate itself against a comprehensive range of international school and educational standards in preparation for an evaluation visit by the school’s accrediting agencies this coming April. A team of 13 representatives from CIS, WASC, and the IB will spend a week at our school examining the report and seeking to both challenge and validate its findings in a shared effort to support our school’s ongoing development and improvement. We are excited to welcome our visitors and delighted to have finally completed this particularly intensive process of internal and external scrutiny. A reminder to parents that the third session of co-curricular activities commences immediately following the Chinese New Year vacation, so please ensure that your children are prepared and ready for their new activities and that appropriate transportation arrangements have been made. Year of the Sheep: The Sheep (or Goat or Ram) is the 8th sign in the Chinese zodiac and is one of China’s favorite animals. The Chinese character for sheep is 羊‘yang’. The Chinese character for luck 祥 contains the 羊 character and is pronounced ‘xiang’, which is close to ‘yang’. The Sheep therefore becomes a lucky animal! I wish all community members (and especially those of you who are from the Year of the Sheep – 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, and 2015) a most enjoyable and relaxing Spring Festival Holiday, and a wonderful Year of the Sheep! And be sure to play safely with fireworks! wor Steve Moody Director ld sc ho ol ac Happy Spring Festival! ‘Chun Jie Kuai Le’! Chinese New Year is the most important traditional Chinese holiday celebrated at the turn of the Chinese calendar. In China, it is also known as the Spring Festival or Chunjie. Chinese New Year celebrations traditionally run from Chinese New Year’s Eve, the last day of the last month of the Chinese calendar, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first month, making the festival the longest in the Chinese calendar. IST Chinese New Year February 19, 2015 China is an Upcoming World Celebration Dates next week... cr i ed te d by and T H E Friday 13 February 2015 BLAZE W e e k l y Working Learning Acting TOGETHER This year, the Elementary students will have the opportunity to have their writing featured in our 2nd issue of the Elementary writing publication, ‘The Dragon’s Voice’. Similarly to last year, there will be a front cover design competition. Throughout February and March students will be invited to submit an art design. It could be an original art design or an existing piece from art class. A small committee will select the front cover at the end of March. In order to have the best digital image, the design submitted should have a dark and bold outline and there should be very little ‘white space’ in the design. This will help to limit the amount of digital adjustment to the original design. There is no need to include the words, ‘the dragon’s voice’ in the design as we already have our logo. Teachers will be nominating written pieces for selection in the publication from now until April. The criteria for the selection of written pieces is as follows: Evidence of the writing process - the student’s writing has gone through the process of planning, drafting, revising, editing. Both a peer and a teacher have checked the writing piece. The teacher has recommended the writing as worthy of celebration. The student or peers recommended this writing to be published for its qualities. The writing piece is typed or neatly presented (in some cases a handwritten piece can be scanned). Copies of the 2nd issue of the Dragon’s Voice will be sold at the Community fair in June. Look out for displays around the school that show some of the writing from last year’s publication. Feel free to contact a member of the Elementary Writing Committee should you have any questions. We also gave away Valentine’s Day themed bookmarks (to anyone). We encourage everyone to return books in a timely manner so they can re-‐ circulate and be shared. Show your love and visit the Circulation Desk today! World Languages in the Library Amongst the IST Library’s collection of more than 41,000 copies, there are 2,150 volumes of books in Chinese, approximately 1,000 in French, 850 in German, 850 in Korean and 330 in Danish. We received some generous donations from the community last semester. The Chinese community donated approximately 80 books and we also received a series of science books from Ha Yun Noh, a former IST G1 student. (Thank you, Ha Yun; we wish you all the best in Korea.) The books have just been added to the library collection and are ready to be borrowed. The total number of library volunteer hours to date exceeds 140! Library volunteers Ms. Jung Eun Kim and Ms. So Young Yoo helped to catalog the new Korean books. And with the help of parent Isabelle Flahault, a French corner in the early childhood library section has just been created. The volunteers’ contribution to the library is much appreciated. A big “thank you” goes to all the volunteers. Parent Book Club Our next novel is The Map Thief by Heather Terrell. We have ordered copies from The Book Depository and will advise members as soon as they arrive. The IST Book Club is open to all members of the IST and the greater Tianjin community. Currently, we have 15 members comprised of seven nationalities. If you would like to attend, please register on the blog or send an email to: [email protected]. T H E Friday 13 February 2015 BLAZE W e e k l y Working Learning Acting TOGETHER Tianjin International Schools Math Competition 2015 High School Report On Tuesday February 3rd, four high school students – Jeff Chang (grade 10), Jun Hwan Kim (grade 10), Jun Young Yoon (grade 11), and Jae Yeon Jeon (grade 12) – represented IST and participated in the Math Competition at Wellington College. There were a total of four rounds, including group round, crossnumber round, treasure hunt, and relay round. Both as a pair and as a group, we incessantly used our mathematical skills to solve a variety of math questions. Especially during the treasure hunt, everyone enthusiastically ran around the school to find the envelopes with math questions inside. At last, our school got the first place! It was a meaningful time to all of us who participated in the competition. by Jae Yeon Jeon Middle School Report Last Tuesday I had the honor to participate in this year's Tianjin Math Competition with 7 of my fellow IST schoolmates at Wellington International School. It was a fun and educating experience for me and I enjoyed it a lot. At the end the two teams of our school received 1st and 2nd place, and we were all very proud. During this competition I was the oldest member of our middle school team. I worked with 3 other capable students (Sung Ho Lee, Ye Jin Jeong and Rina Yuminaga) who were ready to cooperate throughout the afternoon and each brought something with them into the team. Throughout the competition we faced a lot of difficult challenges, but we were willing to work together and try our best to solve them. It was a pleasure working with them and I believe everyone felt the same way. by Yu Yen Chiu T H E Friday 13 February 2015 BLAZE W e e k l y Working Learning Acting TOGETHER T H E Friday 13 February 2015 BLAZE W Working Learning Acting TOGETHER e e k l y IST Elementary School PE Uniform Policy At IST, Physical Education plays a very important role in the curriculum and the overall wellbeing of the students. Students are encouraged to become independent learners and have all essential items for this specialist lesson. For health, safety and hygiene our students must wear the IST PE Uniform during regular PE classes, with the option to wear a Training Kit (“sporty outfit”) for the Daily Fitness Program and CCA program. We would strongly suggest that students keep a pair of training shoes in their locker at school since these are required almost daily for PE, Fitness or CCAs. What is the IST uniform? ¥ IST shorts and T Shirts (available all year at the school reception desk) ¥ Training shoes that are supportive and non-‐marking ¥ Hear band/clips for the long hair are required ¥ Pieces of jewelry such as necklaces should not be used at any time during PE lessons, as they may represent a danger to students’ safety Why is it important to wear the IST uniform? ¥ All activities in the PE program require students to have clothing that allows them to move quickly and freely. Incorrect clothing can be a danger to the student and others. ¥ The temperature in the Gym is kept at 20oC all year long and therefore the IST PE uniform is more than adequate for moderate to intense exercise.
