Everything Belongs To God
The first reading from the prophet Isaiah concerns
the Persian King Cyrus, called the Lord’s
“anointed.” Cyrus deserves this title because he
ended the Babylonian captivity of the Jews.
However, Isaiah reminds us that it was God who
gave Cyrus his power. He may be a great king, but
“I am the LORD and there is no other,” says God
(Isaiah 45:5).
Today’s Gospel is also concerned with worldly
power. In the passage from Matthew, the Pharisees
try to trick Jesus into speaking against the emperor.
His famous answer is the perfect reply. Like the
kings of old, Caesar can be given the respect due his
position, but everything belongs to God.
In the second reading, Paul gives thanks for all who
are faithful to Jesus Christ and his gospel. He, too,
reminds us that our call and the power to be faithful
come from God.

Treasures From Our TradiƟon
When the fathers of the Second Vatican Council met
to discuss the sacrament of penance, they were required
to draw up a new rite, including several forms. The hot
button for debate was so-called “general absolution,” by
which a penitent could be absolved of sin without
confessing to a priest. This was a difficult debate,
compounded by widely varying traditions in both East
and West. Some were surprised to learn that the Holy
See had already given permission, during the First and
Second World Wars, for this form. In 1944 the Vatican
issued a decree saying this form was valid under extreme
conditions, which bishops in mission lands and Latin
America took as a kind of “blanket permission.”
Thus, the fathers of the Council were alarmed to
find this practice fairly widespread, not only in war, but
in peaceful places with huge numbers of faithful and few
priests. Although they eventually produced a ritual with
three different forms, the forms are not considered equal,
and the enriched and revised individual form is
preferred. The enrichments include a welcome of the
penitent, a sign of the cross with an encouragement to
trust in God’s compassion, new texts rich in the Word of
God, praise for God’s mercy, and a dismissal.

Our Blessed Mother for Everyday Earthly Living: Untying the
Strong Woman
These Tuesday sessions, once a month, will be an opportunity for participants to
connect with the holiness of God, in and through Mary, the Mother of God. Each
session will begin with the Church’s traditional feasts of Mary. Then we will
expand into using contemporary images of Mary as pathways to her spirit in the
world today. By seeking to partially untie preconceived images and ideas of
Mary that we hold in our minds and hearts, we will try imagining her life and
holiness in new ways, using prayer, scripture, presentation discussion and story.

Spiritual DirecƟon Ministry
A way to draw closer to God
Spiritual direction is an ancient ministry, a unique
one-to-one relationship in which a trained person assists
another person in the search for an ever closer union of
love with God.
Directors listen carefully to the unfolding of directees’
lives, to help them discern the ways in which God is
leading them. The practice of spiritual direction consists
much more of “holy listening” rather than direction in the
sense of offering guidance or direct advice.
If you would like to find someone who can assist you
in deepening your relationship with God, contact
Sr. Virginia at (310) 285-5425 who can put you in touch
with a qualified director.

The St. Francis Pledge
During the month of October we are all invited to focus
our thoughts and prayers on the care we give to God’s
creation. What is our part in caring for the earth and all
its creatures? We take our lead first from St. Francis of
Assisi, whose feast we celebrated a Saturday, October
4th, and secondly from the discussions that occurred at
the United Nations regarding climate change.
The United States Catholic Bishops website,
catholicclimatecovenant.org is a wonderful place to
begin our journey. There we can find the St. Francis
Pledge which we are all asked to review and sign,
as a way to focus our commitment and awareness, as
individuals and as a church. Our beautiful earth, and all
the life that teems forth from it, needs our respect, care
and attentiveness. We as a parish will keep this pledge
forefront in our minds throughout this month. Being
that October is also the month of the Holy Rosary, we
can encourage one another also to pray the rosary for
the protection of the poor and vulnerable, and for the
care of all of God’s creation.
I/We Pledge to:
PRAY and reflect on the duty to care for God’s
Creation and protect the poor and vulnerable.
LEARN about and educate others on the causes and
moral dimensions of climate change.
ASSESS how we—as individuals and in our families,
parishes and other affiliations—contribute to and
climate change by our own energy use, consumption,
waste.
ACT to change our choices and behaviors to reduce the
ways we contribute to climate change.
ADVOCATE for Catholic principles and priorities in
climate change discussions and decisions, especially as
they impact those who are poor and vulnerable.
Take the pledge on the U.S. Catholic Bishops
website - catholicclimatecovenant.org

AdverƟser of the Week
Dear Parishioners,
Our Sunday bulletin is an important way for us to communicate with you. Producing it every
week could be very costly, but through our arrangement with the J.S. Paluch Company the
parish does not pay for the printing, saving thousands of dollars each year. Our Bulletin is
supported through the generosity of the businesses that you see advertised on the back cover
Most of these advertisers are parishioners and members of our local community.
During these difficult economic times, we encourage you to support these advertisers with
your patronage and tell them that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertisements in the
bulletin. As we come to another season of the year, we would like to say to you THANK YOU for your support.
Good Shepherd News
Musical Events At
Good Shepherd
October 19 will mark the
beginning of a series of
special musical events that
will go through the spring
of 2015. These events will
include organ recitals by
visiting players, as well as special choral presentations
focused on certain occasions during the church year such
as Epiphany or “Good Shepherd Sunday” (the Fourth
Sunday of Easter).
These events will not be financially supported through
the parish budget, but by donations taken at the door, and
by building a base of “Good Shepherd Friends of Music”
as a resource. Some generous donations have already
been given as seed money for this endeavor, and an
independent account established which is being overseen
by our Director of Administration, Michael Caraway.
As we draw closer to the first event in October, a
calendar of events will be published, and everyone will
be given the opportunity to contribute financial support
towards these exciting and beautiful presentations.
Stay tuned for coming details!

All Souls Memorial Masses for
All Our Deceased Loved Ones
This will take place at the 5:30 evening Mass on
Saturday, November 1st at all the Masses on
Sunday, November 2nd, the Feast of All Souls.
You are invited to bring to the Mass photographs
(preferably in a picture frame) of your deceased
loved ones, and to place these photographs on a
special memorial table near the sanctuary, so that
everyone can see them during the Mass. In all of
these ways, we will remember, honor, and pray for
our loved ones who have died.
There will be a reception in the Parish Hall after
each Mass that weekend.
Parish Finance Report for October 12, 2014
$23,000—What it cost last week to keep the doors open,
that is, to pay for operating expenses, programs and the
ministries that serve God’s people. Last week’s
collection income: $11,858.
How is the discrepancy between the cost of running the
parish and the collection income made up? Some of the
difference comes from occasional large gifts or bequests,
but most of it is from interest earned on investments of
major gifts made by generous people in the past, most of
whom are long gone. Thank God we are not in debt, and
a long way from being in debt, but we need to reduce and
eventually eliminate the deficit. It is important that
everyone who calls Good Shepherd their parish home
contribute to sustain the life of the parish. If you do not
have a plan for contributing in proportion to your means,
please consider it.
With the arrival of autumn, I'd like to invite you to join
Faith Direct, our parish's electronic eGiving program.
Everyone's to-do lists can get lengthy in this season when
vacations are over and we get serious about work and
school. Faith Direct's eGiving program will give you one
less thing to remember each week - no more envelopes to
find and checks to write before you go to Mass. Enroll
today by visiting www.faithdirect.net and use our
church code, CA461, visit our parish website,
www.gsbh.org, or pick up an enrollment form from the
parish office to get started!
Thank you and May God bless your generosity.
