Love with
an Amr on
Home!
By Barbara Watson
“Only five more sleeps,” Ron
Heizelman said on Tuesday. It has
hit home that on October 18, his
beard will come off. It’s been part of
his face for nearly 40 years and family members have never seen him
without it. No wonder the challenge
he took on a few weeks ago has
become something he measures in
sleeps. That’s the way a child waits
for Santa Claus or the way someone
waits for an axe to fall. In Ron’s case
the procedure will start with shears
held in part by the reason for all this
to-do. Little Madi, Ron’s granddaughter, has a rare genetic disorder. The Rett Syndrome she is
unfortunate enough to be a prisoner
of makes it impossible for her to do
anything on her own. She cannot
walk, or talk, or express her needs
to parents, grandparents, or even
her little sister.
Enter the elements that make
Madi fortunate. She has grandparents to take up the slack when parents are bound to need assistance.
Grampa Ron has taken up the
cause for not only his granddaughter, Madi, but for all those who are
also unfortunate enough to have
this extremely rare disorder. Two
weeks ago the Shopper carried the
story about Ron dyeing his beard
purple in preparation for getting it
whacked off. It contained much
about Madi and about Rett syndrome – probably something most
of us had never heard of.
The fact that it is so rare makes
raising money for research for this
disorder rather more difficult than
raising money for heart and stroke,
cancer, or many other diseases that
we try to eliminate. This one, Rett,
has no cure, unless there is a mira-

Great family home!
How can we not pay attention?
cle, of course. Never discount miracles.
You have all heard the word
hope used without being too profound. I read recently, and you will
probably agree, that hope is what
makes us humans. Ron and family
will never give up hope that Madi’s
life will improve.
That’s why Ron is doing what he
can to draw attention to this situation in our city. The beard, dyeing it
purple, and now painting his fingernails purple, do not solve the problem of the disease, but the attention
drawn to the situation is powerful.
People in our community have
already contributed $1400 with the
purple beard campaign. Mayor Ted
Clugston will be there at 10:00 a.m.
in the Co-op mall to witness the fall
of the beard. Perhaps he will soothe
Ron and assure him that life without
a beard can take people to powerful
places.
It will definitely be a momen-

tous, even emotional few minutes.
You might see tears as a result of
the shears’ work. Not Ron’s, of
course. However, I cannot imagine
that his wife will not shed some kind
of tears. Maybe her tears will be
happiness that she has discovered
a handsome young prince who is all
hers. Honestly, doesn’t everyone
agree that a beard adds years to a
man’s face? And, isn’t youth something our society holds as super
valuable?
Madi giggles for apparently no
reason, occasionally. I hope that
seeing her Grampa without his
beard will be one of those occasions.
So there’s the word hope again.
You know that I surf the Internet for
nuggets of wisdom that I can imbed
in these fluffy articles. The one
about hope being a human trait I
cannot ascribe to any particular
author. I gave up looking for it, but it
doesn’t matter anyway. I found

“Hope lies in dreams, in

Young people will not know
Jonas Salk, but there are still
people in Medicine Hat today
who suffered from polio, a terrible disease that caused crippling of limbs and even death.
Jonas Salk created a vaccine
to prevent this disease. In 1955

Electric bassist David Ellefson
has been a mainstay in the heavy
metal community for over 30 years.
Internationally acclaimed as the cofounding bassist of Thrash Metal
titans MEGADETH. With countless
gold & platinum records and 11
Grammy nominations, David has
recently released his autobiography
My Life With Deth through
Howard Books.
The book tells of his wholesome
Minnesota Lutheran upbringing, but
follows his path into drug addiction
while pursuing his dream of rock
stardom in Hollywood. A return to
his faith in Jesus Christ in 1990
brought him back from the depths of
addiction and restored his family
and career.
My Life With Deth also
chronicles Ellefson’s transition into
ministry work. In 2006, he founded
the MEGA Life! Ministry in
Scottsdale, AZ and has pursued
seminary training at Concordia
College in St. Louis, MO.

How to start a small business
(MS) Starting their own a business is a dream for
many men and women. Instead of reporting to a boss
and following the particular hierarchy of a company,
entrepreneurs can set their own rules and hours.
But starting a business does not just involve putting
an open-for-business sign in the window. It involves
preparation to ensure the business succeeds and is in
accordance with laws and guidelines set by the local government.
The first step in starting a business is to figure out
what the business hopes to accomplish. It is a wise idea
to draft a business plan that clearly states your goals and
what you hope to accomplish on a daily basis. According
to the U.S. Small Business Administration, a business plan
should include a listing of how the business will be marketed, who your expected competition will be, the names
of your expected personnel, and the amount of available
start-up capital at your disposal. A business plan is a good
document to have and one that is often necessary for
prospective owners who hope to secure a small-business
loan from a bank or private investors.
Once the business plan has been developed, take
advantage of any free training and counseling services
that might be available. Such services offers strategies for
a successful business, and established business owners
might even participate by offering advice and answering
questions. Learn from their successes and failures and
when establishing your own business.
It's also imperative that prospective business owners
decide which type of legal entity their business will be.
These include sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company (LLC), corporation, S corporation, nonprofit, or cooperative. An attorney who specializes in business
law can help you establish the legal structure that will be
the most beneficial to you.
You also will have to find a business location. While
there are brick-and-mortar businesses opening every
day, a large number of new businesses begin on the Internet. It is very difficult to determine just how many online
businesses there are since the reach of the Internet is so
vast. However, the low overhead of an online business
and the increasing propensity for individuals and shoppers to spend time online makes the Internet an attractive venue for a business start-up.
Small business owners also must register their businesses with their local governments. To do so, you will
first need to apply for a business number from the The
Canada Revenue Agency. This identification number is a
15 character identifier of your business. Once you have
this number, you will be able to open up bank accounts in
the business' name as well as register with your local government to pay payroll taxes and any sales tax necessary.
If permits or licenses are necessary for your business, you
will have to apply for those as well.
Prospective small business owners can also apply for
a business credit card and open up a business bank
account. These accounts will help you keep your business
funds separate from your personal funds. They are necessary to establish business credit as well as to purchase
supplies and make payroll payments.
Starting a business can be a rewarding venture and
help individuals become their own boss. Not every business will become a success, but starting out on the right
foot can help.

Time-Saving Tools for Busy Lives
Amazing, isn't it? Every
day, you've got 24 hours.
Some days, you feel like
you've grabbed every hour
and lived it to the max.
Other days, time seems to
slip through your fingers
like grains of sand.
Even though time
can't be pinned down,
modern
life
often
demands that you live
within a framework of
schedules, timetables and
deadlines. It helps to be
organized! Being organized doesn't necessarily
mean living by a lot of rigid
rules. It means making
choices—your choices—
about what's important to
you and then arranging
your time and space to
focus on those choices.
Take a moment to
reflect on the pace of your
life. Does it feel like you’re
rushing from task to task
and worrying about how
you’ll get everything
done? When you start to
feel overwhelmed, it's time
to pick up some organizational tools and create the
time and space you need
to focus on your goals—
the things that are important to you.
Here are five great
tools to get you started:
The daily planner
A daily planner keeps
your goals, schedule and
vital information together
in one place. By glancing at
your daily planner each
evening, you can plan the
following day.
Your daily planner
could be an app on a smart
phone, lap top or tablet, or
a printed appointment
book—or a combination of
these. Whatever you use,
choose a planner that is
• both a calendar and a
place to record notes,
reminders, thoughts, etc
• small enough to carry
with you
• big enough to hold
your to-do list, appointments, plans, phone numbers, etc
If you decide to use a
combination of paper and
electronic planners, allow
yourself time to keep them
synchronized. For example,
take 10 minutes after dinner each night to update
the wall calendar or message board at home using
the notes you’ve made on
your phone.
It’s also a good idea to
review and record your
goals in your daily planner
at the beginning of each
month. This will help you
stay in touch with what's
most important to you.
The to-do list
Time management
experts say that list-making is one of the most useful tools because it helps
you visualize your plans.
When you’ve made your
list, try to sort the tasks
according to how important each one is. You can
assign a rank or underline
the high priority items on
your list. If you manage to
get only those things
done, you’ll still be making
the best use of the time
you have.
The done list
This list is an important motivator because it
encourages
you
to
acknowledge what your
hard work achieves. At the
end of each day, take a
moment to write out or
just think about your done
list. Include all of the items
on your to-do list that
you've completed as well
as other important things
you did. If you tend to
worry, your done list can
show you how much
you’ve actually accomplished.
A place for everything
This well-known saying has been around a long
time because it works: A
place for everything and
everything in its place.
When you think of all the
time spent frantically hunting for your keys or your
wallet or the bill that needs
to be paid today, it really
makes sense to organize
your living space. This step
comes with a bonus—it
creates a calmer environment by reducing clutter.
Practise telling yourself: don't put it down—
put it away. This may take
some effort at first, but
returning things to their
designated place can
become a habit before you
know it, and will save you
hours of time in the long
run.
Manage your phone and
screen time.
This can be challenging but it can make a big

difference in the amount of

important things. Start by
keeping track of the time
you spend in one week in
front of screens texting,
social networking or
browsing online, watching
TV or playing video
games—time that’s not
directly related to school
or work. The number of
hours may surprise you.
When you think of how
much time in a month or
even a year you spend
watching a screen, you
may decide to make some
changes.
You can choose to
answer phone calls or texts
at the time that’s best for
you.Turning off your cell or
unplugging your landline
or home phone is always
an option when you don't
want to take calls. You
could turn off the TV while
you're eating dinner. Or
you may choose to make
some evenings screenfree. You can spend the
extra time seeing friends or
doing hobbies or maybe
taking a course at a local
college.
Take some time to find
out which time-saving
tools are right for you. You
can sometimes make very
simple changes in your life
and discover that you have
much more time available.
Then, you can effectively
use that time to accomplish what's most important to you.

Topics to discuss before hiring your next
mechanic
(MS) Few decisions weigh as heavily on automobile
owners as their choice of mechanic. A good mechanic
goes a long way toward ensuring drivers and their passengers stay safe on the road and that those drivers' vehicles perform at their peak for years to come. That's an
important role to play, and it's why many drivers acknowledge that choosing a mechanic is a decision that should
not be taken lightly.
Rest assured you don't need to be a car guy or gal to
find a trustworthy and talented mechanic. You might just
need to open a dialogue with a prospective mechanic,
discussing a handful of topics that can help you feel more
comfortable and know you have made the right choice in
automotive service provider once a final decision has
been made.
Certification
Certification can go a long way toward helping drivers find mechanics they can trust. The National Institute
for Automotive Service Excellence was founded in 1972
and continues to work to improve the quality of automotive service and repair by testing automotive technicians
and certifying those who live up to or exceed ASE standards. An ASE-certified technician should have his or her
credentials readily available to prospective customers,
and these credentials list each professional's area of certification. When shopping for a new mechanic, make sure

that he or she is ASE-certified. In addition, discuss with the
mechanic his or her work history, including any additional areas of expertise.
Pricing policies
Many mechanics offer free estimates, but that should
not be taken for granted. When bringing a car in for an
estimate, drivers should confirm with the mechanic who
will conduct the examination if the estimate is free or if
they will be charged an inspection fee.
In addition to any fees regarding estimates, drivers
should also inquire about labor costs and the payment
policies at the facility. Labor can be quite expensive, so it's
best that you know these rates in advance of any repairs
being conducted on your vehicle. It's also important to
get a rundown of the company payment policies, especially if your vehicle is in need of potentially costly repairs.
You don't want the bill to shock you once the work has
been completed, so don't hesitate to be inquisitive before
leaving a car at the garage.
Parts
Replacing parts on a vehicle is a cause for concern for
many drivers, and rightfully so. Consumer advocacy
groups have exposed many mechanics who pass off used
auto parts as new parts, charging their customers new
part prices along the way. While there's no way drivers
can guarantee they won't fall victim to such criminal
behavior, they can inquire about company policies
regarding vehicle parts. Does the garage even install used
parts? If so, do they let drivers choose either new or used
parts before any work is done? If the garage only uses
new parts, ask for parts with solid warranties, so if the part
must be replaced, you won't have to pay for it again.
4 ways to conserve fuel
(MS) As costly as gas has become, drivers can still mitigate those costs by employing a few strategies aimed at
increasing their driving efficiency. The following are a few
ways drivers can offset high fuel costs regardless of the
time of year.
1. Maintain a consistent speed. Though it might be
hard to maintain a consistent speed when driving during
rush hour, it should not be too difficult to do so when hitting the open road. If most of your driving is done on the
highway, go easy on your engine by maintaining a consistent speed. The easier you are on
the engine, the less taxed that
engine will be and the less fuel it
will need as a result.
If going on a long road trip or
if your daily commute involves
long stretches of highway driving,
rely on your vehicle's cruise control
function to make things easier on
your engine and conserve fuel.
2. Don't drive when you can
walk or bike. It might sound simple, but the best way to
conserve fuel is not to use it at all. Walk or ride your bicycle when performing local errands. Save a few litres of gas
by running errands on foot or on your bicycle. If a physical condition makes it hard for you to walk or bike, make
use of public transportation when you need to travel

Documentation
The preowned vehicle market is thriving, and drivers
who take care of their vehicles have earned the right to
reap their rewards for being good owners when it comes
time to sell the car. When interviewing prospective
mechanics, ask if they are willing to provide detailed documentation of any work they do on your vehicle. Such
documentation can then be shared with prospective
buyers when you want to sell the car, and it also serves as
a way to keep the garage accountable for all the work
they have done on the car throughout your relationship.

locally.
3. Obey the speed limit. The open road entices
many drivers to put the pedal to the metal, but driving
over the speed limit is both illegal and expensive. The
Department of Energy notes that drivers pay an additional $0.31 per litre for every five kilometres they drive over
50 kph. Since gas prices already high, drivers would be
wise to obey the speed limit and conserve their fuel as
well as their money.
4. Don't make your vehicle into a traveling closet.
Many drivers keep excess materials
in their cars, whether it's a cooler
for picnics, a set of golf clubs or an
old baby stroller. Excess weight will
rear its ugly head at the pump. The
DOE notes than an extra 50 kilograms in a vehicle can reduce its
kilometres per litre by as much as
two percent. Before hitting the
highway, check your trunk and the
backseat and remove any unnecessary items.
Drivers spend a considerable amount of money at
the gas pump each week. But a few simple strategies to
conserve fuel can save money and help the planet at the
same time.

Tips for motorcycle
beginners
(MS) Men and women who ride
motorcycles often insist there's nothing
quite like riding. Riding a motorcycle not
only can be exhilarating and provide a
feeling unlike any other, but it also
requires patience and discipline for beginners and veteran riders alike.
Riding a motorcycle carries a certain
stigma of being dangerous, but that's only
the case for inattentive riders who forget
their responsibilities while on the road.
The following are some tips that beginners can put to use when hitting the open
road.
• Gear up and stay geared up.
Beginners often don't have a problem
gearing up, as many are understandably
nervous and therefore less likely to leave
necessary equipment in the garage.
Always wear a helmet, motorcycle jacket,
riding gloves, riding boots and motorcycle
pants when riding. Many riders fall into
the trap of wearing less gear once they
become more acclimated to their bike. But
gear should be worn whether you have
been riding for 50 days or 50 years.
• Prepare, prepare, prepare. There's
no such thing as too much preparation
when riding a motorcycle. Motorcycle
training guides are valuable tools of information for beginners. These instructional
videos or reading materials provide
THE MEDICINE HAT SHOPPER, Regional Publication, Month of October, 2014, Page 3
insight into all aspects of riding a motorcycle, and no beginner should get on a
motorcycle without first watching or reading a motorcycle training guide.
• Practice away from other
motorists. Don't start riding on a freeway
until you have grown accustomed to riding the bike at slow practice speeds
you've honed away from other motorists.
Empty parking lots make ideal training
grounds. Once you feel comfortable in the
parking lot, gradually move to roads without heavy traffic, such as residential
neighborhoods. Once you're truly comfortable on the bike, then you can hit the
highway.
• Go to class. A motorcycle safety
course might be a requirement in some
areas but not required in others. Regardless of whether or not it's required, take
the class anyway. Such classes might cost
a few hundred dollars, but their value far
exceeds that cost. A safety course prepares riders for anything they might
encounter on the road. Just be sure to
enroll in a class that teaches accident evasion.
• Get the right size. Some riders envision themselves at the helm of a big hog,
while others see themselves tooling down
the highway on an ultra-light bike. But
don't go to extremes in either direction, at
least not with your first motorcycle. A
heavy bike might be more stable, but it's
also harder to control. A lighter bike might
feel easier to control, but it's best to wait
until you have had a year or two of experience before buying bikes often referred to
as "crotch rockets," which are sporty and
fast.
Tire maintenance an
important safety precaution
(MS) Tires are the link between a vehicle and the roadway, and tire quality has a
direct impact on the performance and
safety of an automobile. But tire maintenance is easy to overlook. However, ignoring tire maintenance can threaten driver
and passenger safety and make a vehicle
operate inefficiently.
Steering, breaking ability and traction
are all governed by good tires. Worn tread
can result in longer stopping times and
make it difficult to brake immediately in
an emergency situation. Although driving
tends to be the primary culprit behind
worn down tires, sometimes bald or
unevenly worn out tread is indicative of a
larger problem, such as a misaligned
wheelbase, improperly aligned tires or
tires that are underinflated. The following
are some common problems associated
with tires and how to address these issues
should they arise.
Blowouts
Worn tire treads increase the risk of
punctures, which can lead to blowouts.
Bald tires also may blowout as a result of
friction on roadways that is met with minimal rubber. Getting caught on the side of
the road with a tire blowout can be a hassle, so routinely check tire treads and
replace tires accordingly.
Tread depth
Average new tires on cars usually
start with 10/32 inch to 11/32 inch of original tread depth. When tread reaches a
depth of 2/32 inch, they are considered
worn out. There are different ways to
gauge tread depth. Insert a penny into the
tread groove with the queen's head
upside down and facing you. If you can
see all of the queen's head, it is time to
replace the tires. Another coin test is to
insert a quarter into the groove. If the
tread touches the caribou's head, you
have at least 4/32 inch of tread left. Don't
have any currency on hand? Then look at
the treadwear indicator bar molded into
the tires. When these bars become flush
with the adjacent ribs of the tire, the tires
should be replaced.
Alignment
Improper alignment causes rapid or
uneven treadwear.Tires should be aligned
and balanced periodically to avoid irregular wear and having to replace tires prematurely.
Tread pattern
Tires feature different tread patterns
depending on the brand of tire. They may
be directional, asymmetrical, nondirectional, and directional/asymmetrical.
When purchasing replacement tires, it is
adviseable to match the tread pattern to
the existing tires. This helps enhance the
performance of the car. In fact, some
newer cars require tread to match. Mismatched treads may cause problems with
transmission shifting or impact control
and steadiness.
Tire pressure
Underinflation of tires can cause failure, stress and irregular wear. Underinflated tires also may contribute to loss of control that leads to accidents. Always
maintain the manufacturer's recommendations for the correct pressure, which
should be adjusted based on the temperature.
Tires should undergo the same
inspection and maintenance as other
parts of the vehicle. Tires are a vital component to safe driving, and routine maintenance can prevent accidents and other
problems.

Properly maintained headlights vastly improve driver safety
(MS) The importance of maintaining a vehicle cannot be understated. In addition to protecting their
financial investments, drivers who properly maintain
their vehicles are also protecting themselves and their
passengers.
Many elements of vehicle maintenance become
second nature to drivers once they have a few months
of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars running smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers
remember to maintain their headlights, a potentially
dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of
drivers and their fellow motorists.
Old or poorly maintained headlights can be hazardous for a variety of reasons. When coupled with
inclement weather, outdated or dirty headlights can
make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians and other
vehicles. In addition, drivers who struggle to see at
night may find their visibility further compromised by
older headlights that don’t provide the light they need
to navigate their vehicles safely once the sun has gone
down.

become as simple as child’s play! Here are
some simple tips to help you explain your
flooring needs to the experts.
1.) Draw an outline of the room you want
to install flooring in and note the following:
ROOM EXITS - are there exits to the outside?
Are there sliding patio doors?
ADJOINING ROOMS - what are the types and
colours of flooring in the adjoined rooms?
LUMINOSITY - how much natural sunlight
comes in during the day and from which direction?
SUBFLOORS - what is underneath the existing
floor?
MEASUREMENTS - measure the length and
width of the room in inches or feet (do not forget to include the closets).
2.) To match your floors with your home
decor, bring samples of the following with you:
- Wall paint color - Wallpaper
- Furniture
- Fabrics
- a Cabinet drawer or
- a piece of your baseboard
3.) Be prepared to answer the following
questions:
DURABILITY - is there light or heavy traffic in
this room? What is the room used for? Do you
have children or pets? How long do you want
this flooring to last? Will you be installing the
flooring yourself?
STYLE - do you have a certain color in mind? Is
there a style you have owned or seen that you
really like? What is the mood of the room?
Quiet? Playful? Formal? Casual? What is the
lifestyle of the room? Chic? Cozy? Studio
Urbano? Classik Elegance?
4.) Important questions to ask your flooring expert:
SUBFLOOR - Describe what is under your current flooring and ask how this material can
affect the choice of your new flooring. Will you
have to remove the existing flooring? Will you
need to lay down a new subfloor?

Carpet isn’t just comfortable and stylish, it is
also affordable. For those who want to save
money and who welcome the fact that carpet
provides actual thermal resistance (R-value) meaning that when the temperatures start to
drop, carpet retains warmth longer. This results
in a conservation of energy and may help to
reduce heating bills. Carpet is also a safe flooring
option in that it reduces slips and softens falls (if
they do occur) which is ideal for both the elderly and the very young.

Your carpet also acts as an air filter, trapping
allergens and keeping them out of the air you
and your family breathe. These trapped allergens, such as pollen, pet dander and dust can
then be easily removed through proper cleaning techniques. Carpet also improves the
acoustics in a home because it absorbs noise
rather than reflecting it back into the room.
We make windows for any application, including
residential, multi-family and light commercial
