Deploying Microsoft SQL Server on Tegile Intelligent Flash Arrays
Your business depends on Microsoft SQL Server for its mission-critical
applications. It’s essential that you deliver consistent performance and
high levels of availability. But that can be difficult to do without the
right storage infrastructure in place.
Tegile offers a comprehensive portfolio of hybrid and all-flash storage
solutions that deliver sustained performance and resiliency for your
SQL Server databases, while lowering your storage infrastructure
costs. Each array includes a comprehensive set of data management
capabilities and can seamlessly support different storage media
(high-performance flash, dense flash, and hard disks) under a single
storage operating system. Dial up or down the amount of flash
storage to meet your performance needs.
Get the lightning-fast performance of flash with the economics of disk.
High performance: Intelligent use of DRAM, flash and hard disk drives
boost I/O throughput and IOPs in both physical and virtualized SQL
Server environments. DRAM and flash resources transparently cache
SQL indexes, Columnstore Indexes (CSI), and frequently accessed data
pages and tables. Writes are directed into flash so acknowledgments
are fast and consistent.
Cost effective: Tegile arrays deliver all-flash performance at disk array
prices. Tegile knows not all data is “flash-critical”. Using a patented
IntelliFlash™ architecture, Tegile arrays accelerate databases by
placing frequently accessed data in high performance main memory or
the flash pool. No need to compromise on capacity or break IT
budgets. As a result of lower storage latency, SQL Server CPUs can do
more work in the same time. This facilitates SQL Server virtualization
and greatly improves the ROI with respect to SQL Server licenses.
Data protection and disaster recovery: Tegile arrays integrate with
Microsoft Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) and Volume Shadow Copy
Service (VSS). Point-in-time thin-snapshots can be executed very
quickly and take very little space, since only metadata and changes
occupy physical space. Read/Write thin-clones can be created out of
thin-snapshots in just a few clicks. Clones can be created individually,
or with the consistency group function. Clones may be provided to
test, development or reporting teams without impacting production,
or clones can serve as the basis for new databases.
Public cloud pricing: Tegile Agility Pricing allows customers to convert
capital-intensive projects into modest monthly payments (OpEx). The
payment is tied to the capacity used on the storage array, further
reducing operational expenditures. Customers decide where their
storage is located and control all usage, data, security and compliance
with any regulatory requirements.
“With the
implementation of
Tegile’s arrays, storage is
no longer an issue at Aer
Lingus. The deployment
has given us more bang
for our buck and allowed
a lot more breathing
space for our IT team.”

Single platform for multiple workloads: Tegile arrays support iSCSI, FC, NFS, and CIFS protocols for storage access. All
protocols can be used simultaneously on the same storage array. Multiple SQL Server databases, SharePoint, and
other virtualized server infrastructure can be deployed on a single array. Tegile arrays are highly available with
active-active array controllers and non-disruptive firmware upgrades. All components are redundant and hot
swappable; there is no single point of failure.
Simple to administer: Tegile arrays are easy to administer using browser-based clients. They also deliver a
programmable RESTful API, which can be utilized with Windows PowerShell and integrated into Microsoft System
Center and other management and monitoring frameworks. In addition to Microsoft Hyper-V, Tegile arrays are fully
integrated and certified with several VMware solutions, including VMware vSphere ESXi, vCenter, and VAAI. Tegile’s
vCenter plugin facilitates centralized monitoring and management from vCenter. Tegile Data Protection Services
(TDPS) is also integrated to work with VSS.
Space efficiency: Inline deduplication, compression capabilities can reduce your overall storage footprint by up to
75% for databases. Thin provisioning automatically allocates physical storage as data is being written.

Tegile Features for SQL Server:
Virtualization Ready:
Instant Recovery from Thin Snapshots
Flash Memory provides the IOPs necessary to address
the I/O blender effect found in server virtualization
environments
Application-consistent snapshots deliver instant recovery
of a single database or a tightly coupled set.
Thin Clones
Data Reduction: Virtualized SQL Server
Each clone can be used as a read-write copy that can be
quickly delivered to test and development. Thin clones do
not consume additional space. Clones can also be used
as source for completely new databases.
When SQL Server is virtualized, the OS image and data
can be deduplicated. This eliminates multiple copies of
similar virtualized servers on the storage.
Remote Replication
Efficient Backups: SQL Server Backups
A snapshot can be taken of any LUN or Share. This
snapshot can be the source for remote replication. This
maintains performance of the production LUN/Share by
off-loading replication activity. Only changes are
replicated, reducing bandwidth consumption.
Full backups can be saved to a volume on separate disk pool.
With inline deduplication turned on, all subsequent full
backups will consume a very little new space. Backups can
reside on a production array or an external array.
