Upcoming Production Report October 2014 •

Upcoming Production Report
October 2014
This is a select list of features, TV drama and documentaries in pre-production, production or postproduction in Australia.
Please note:
•
Producers and production companies can be inundated with calls regarding work and may not
welcome unsolicited calls. Their preference is to employ via crewing agencies.
•
Where contact details are omitted in this report, they are unavailable for publication. Some
producers and production companies request that their contact details are not published.
•
Foreign productions predominantly employ a Line Producer to set up the production office in
Australia two to three months (at the earliest) before principal photography date. Screen Australia
will not be able to provide production office contact details before then.
•
Please note that details for some titles are incomplete, particularly if they are in early stages of
production.
You can also keep up to date with industry news and further upcoming production information through:
•
IF (Inside Film) magazine (monthly and online): www.if.com.au (02) 9660 2113
•
The Encore Directory and The Production Book contain lists of production companies,
producers and crewing agencies.
And most of the state agencies list productions online:

There was Romeo and Juliet and then there was Tim and John. The course of teenage
love rarely runs smooth, but if you find yourself gay in an Aussie all-male school in the
1970s and you're entranced by the captain of the football team, life’s a thrill ride. Based
on Timothy Conigrave’s memoir, and the inspiration for the award winning stage play,
HOLDING THE MAN is the remarkable true-life love story of Tim Conigrave and John
Caleo.

This is the story of Australia’s longest war, told through the experiences of those who
fought it. From the Special Forces operatives who landed only weeks after 9/11, to drone
pilots who fought a new kind of war via remote control, to the engineers who built schools
with an eye out for snipers. From prime ministers and generals to private soldiers, the
series' characters reveal themselves before, during and after their war. Some are badly
damaged. Others just did their jobs. All have been transformed by their experience. They
reveal why Australia went to war and how our objectives and strategies changed over 13
years.

In the First World War more than 80% of Australians killed lost their lives on the main
battlefield, facing the main force of the main enemy. That battlefield was the Western
Front where the Australians and New Zealanders were constantly engaged from early in
1916 until the Armistice, late in 1918. This series tells the stories of the ANZACs on the
Western Front, from their first engagement in a small trench raid until their final triumph
as an instrumental part of the “100 Day” advance that led to victory. Through graphics,
archive, oral history and their travels across the battlefields today Neil Pigot and eminent
military historian Dr. Peter Pedersen explain where, how and why the ANZACs fought in
France and Belgium almost 100 years ago.

documentary film about one of Australia's most respected athletic coaches. This film
won't bother telling the overly told story of how Franz coached the man that broke the

exclusive story told by those he loved and cared about, those who knew the real man but
also a story told of such courage and sacrifice that will make you question your own life’s

Accommodated by none of our national myths, major race riots are a distinctive and
enduring part of the way Australia works. Always big news at the time, they inhabit only
the margins of history – until now. This major history series not only reclaims the

Clement Meadmore has been described as Australia’s greatest modernist sculptor, yet in
1963, at the age of 34, he left Australia for New York, returning only twice in 45 years.
When Meadmore died in 2005, he left behind a body of sculpture installed across the US
and in Japan, with only a few, yet significant public pieces in Australia. Yet despite this
international recognition, Australia is shamefully slow to embrace his work. This
documentary will seek to reclaim and reinstate Meadmore as one of this country's most
significant sculptors.

cases unlike their big city counterparts. Yes there’s the usual car accidents, drug and
alcohol problems, heart attacks and sporting injuries, but there are also a few more
distinctive complaints like deadly snake bites, sick tourists who don’t speak English,
miners tumbling down deep shafts, high speed car rollovers, semi-trailer accidents,
livestock attacking farmers and kangaroos through windscreens.

Amin Palangi grew up in the shadow of the glory of the Iran-Iraq war, and with the
fantasy of one day visiting the iconic murals that his father painted during the war in a
mosque in the city of Khorramshahr. But before he had a chance to do so, his family left
Iran. Almost twenty years later his dream comes true when he meets a couple who are
taking people on a war-pilgrimage, called Rahyan-e Nour to visit battle-sites, including
the mosque. But the journey transforms itself and Amin in the most unexpected ways.

Amongst the original occupants of a New York artist housing project known as Westbeth,
modern dancers Edith Stephen and Dudley Williams recall their glory days training and
performing with the likes of Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and Alvin Ailey. Well
into her twilight years, Edith has shifted her focus to experimental filmmaking, with hopes
of completing her first feature by her 95th birthday. Dudley, 75, now teaches the next
generation of dancers the technique of modern dance, having been forced into retirement
a few years ago at the age of 68. As winter descends on Westbeth, Dudley and Edith's
passion to perform continues unabated as they prepare for life's final curtain call.

DEADLINE GALLIPOLI brings together the high-octane drama of the battlefront and the
personal journeys of the soldiers who have signed up for a war they believe will be
glorious. It is the untold story of the journalists – Charles Bean, Ellis Ashmead Bartlett,
Phillip Schuler & Keith Murdoch – who find themselves appalled by how the battle is
being managed. They are flawed human beings, workaholics, and womanisers, but each
is profoundly affected by the bravery and wholesale slaughter he witnesses.

Winston was flying his home-made rocket ship during a minor space trip one day when it
got bumped by the mysterious oracle borealis comet. This strange and powerful comet
suddenly gave his otherwise normal pets on board the power to speak (and act “human”).
Ever since this chance encounter, Winston has been obsessed with locating and
capturing the elusive comet. He believes that, along with “enchancing” normal animals,
the comet must have all kinds of incredible powers that can help the people of earth and
beyond.

The REDFERN NOW telemovie explores the question, how is it possible to maintain a
sense of identity and culture in a changing world? How does one maintain a sense of
community with the encroachment of other interests, demographics, businesses? It will
explore the complexities of contemporary urban blackfellas dealing with these issues.
And the conclusion will be yes, the community remains despite the challenges, and there
is hope.
