Welcome to summer school
Miniature in Tune 2015
It is a great pleasure for us to welcome you to Miniature in Tune, a summer school for people who
are fond of making their own miniatures and like to challenge their craftsmanship.
In 2015 we have one new teacher – Anne Lise Laursen from Denmark. The other teachers are well
known and also highly regarded in their individual fields: Bill Robertson from USA, James
Carrington and Jens Torp from England, Angie Scarr from Spain and Tine Krijnen from The
Netherlands.
Each teacher offers a 3-day class and a 2-day class.
Summer school takes place at Tune Kursuscenter (Tune Conference Centre), which is set in lovely
rural surroundings, run by a Production School: Produktionsskolen i Greve og Høje-Taastrup.

Accommodations
Accommodations are at Tune Kursuscenter (Tune Conference Centre) situated near the villages
Greve and Tune ca. 30 km from Copenhagen and ca. 30 km from Københavns lufthavn, Kastrup
(Copenhagen airport, Kastrup). It is a handsome old estate, but fully equipped to modern standard.
Most of the rooms are for single persons and has a private bathroom, but a few double rooms, also
with private bathroom, are available. At our disposal are spacious workshops, conference rooms,
lecture hall, living room and dining hall. All indoor premises are non-smoking. As the buildings
contain many staircases, they are not suitable for wheelchair users.
Arrival/departure
We start with a welcome gathering on Monday 6th of July 2015 at 9.30 in Aud.1.
Classes take place from Monday at 10.00 till Friday 10th of July at 16.00. We end with an
exhibition of our products Friday at 16-17, and say goodbye to each other in Aud.1.
If you arrive Sunday, rooms are available from 17.00. Sunday dinner is served at 18.00.
The rooms have to be left Friday at 10.00, unless you have bought an extra overnight stay till
Saturday. Those who stay till Saturday should leave the room immediately after breakfast Saturday.
Price
The price for participation is 5.585 DKK (Danish kroner) which pays for classes, board and lodging
from Monday 6th of July at 10.00 until Friday 10th of July at 17.00. Materials fee vary and have to
be paid to the teacher. The amount can be seen at the description of each class. It is possible to buy
extra board and lodgings. Prices can be seen at the registration form.
Payment
Registration and reservation of a seat in the chosen classes is accepted at prepayment of 500 DKK,
which is not refundable if you cancel. Payment of the rest of the price is due at the latest on 1st of
June 2015. The money is to be transferred to Miniature in Tune’s account in Danske Bank, as
described in the registration form.
Cancellation
If you cancel before May 31st 2015 we refund the entire price except the prepaid 500 DKK. If you
cancel before June 7th 2015 we refund 50% of the price. After this date no refunds will be issued.
All teachers have conditioned their teaching of a minimum number of students. If the number of
students at the teachers’ classes does not surpass this minimum number on May 1st 2015, the
classes of this teacher will be cancelled.

Class selection
Each student indicates the choice of one A-class of 3 days and one B-class of 2 days in the
registration form. Some classes are expected to fill quickly, so please indicate 1st, 2nd and 3rd
choices for A-class as well as B-class. Waiting lists will be maintained, in case cancellations make
room in a class of higher priority.
Optional activities in the evening
In the evenings you have various
options. You can keep on working, be
entertained or just relax.
The workshops are open for work (no
teacher) until 22.30, when the school’s
burglar alarm is activated.
We will offer entertainment such as
lecture, fair and exhibition.
The fair Tuesday evening shows invited
exhibitors and those of the students and
teachers who want to sell something of
their own making. If you know at the
registration time, that you have
something to sell, indicate it in the registration form. If you find out later, just bring it along.
Wednesday evening we also exhibit the items, we have just finished in the 3-day classes.
Every night we may get together in “Kostalden” (“The Cow barn”), a large living room, and
exchange experiences of the day and have a refreshment in the self service bar.
At the end of classes on Friday at 16.00, we hurry to the conference hall to make an exhibition of all
our products from the classes and take leave of each other.

A1 - Bill Robertson
Ornate Silver or Tool Chest
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
Teaching language is English.
Chests covered with exotic woods have impressed
people for years. They were often created by fine
craftsman to show off their skills and became popular in
the 19th century but today are fairly rare. These
decorative chests have been used in the house as silver,
tea or sewing chests, in the workshop as tool chests and
by Guilds to hold their sacred regalia. For this project
we are going to make a chest with a clerestory type lid,
which you could make into a secret compartment. The
bottom will have a molded base containing a single
drawer and it will be the size of a medium sized tool
chest.
Our chest will be covered with patterns of exotic woods.
To save time we are going to use the full-scale border
strips produced by Miniatures in Tune’s co-founder
Ursula Dyrbye-Skovsted at Intarsia.
To make this project more fun and a less stressful class
each student will start with a blank chest made by the
instructor, hence the higher materials fee. This will allow students to get right to the fun part of the
project and have a very good chance of finishing the chest in class. Students will start by learning
how to cut these delicate strips using a hand saw and razor blade without splitting them. We will
follow the instructor’s patterns based on the size of the assembled chest. The designs will be glued
in place and sanded flat in sequence. The outside, which gets wider near the bottom, will be covered
with a number of strips and custom made moldings. The drawer can be made to match the banding
around the bottom or be completely different. Notice in the photos the different character the chest
has by just changing the drawer front.
The hinges can be mounted in one of two different ways;
either carefully inset on the inside as shown in the pictures
or the much easier flush mounted to the back. Side
handles, drawer knob and a lock plate will be provided
even though they are not shown in the photos. On a recent
trip to Germany I saw a wonderful Guild Chest with a
large 3 key lock across the front so that could be
something you could make.
The class will mainly focus on the exterior of the chest and
the inside of the lid. This will leave the lift out tray, which
can be fitted for any contents you may chose (tea chest, tool chest, etc.), and the bottom, which can
be done as time permits or at home. The inside of the chest could also be lined in fabric or leather
depending on its intended use.
The finished chest can either have an oil or shellac finish and the interior can be left plain as in the
photos giving it a nice contrast and allowing it to be done later.

Keep in mind, the basic plan is to get the chest finished and hinged in class so you go home with
something completed. Based on feedback from previous years, I have created this class so that
completion during the allotted time is very likely. However I cannot resist when it comes to telling
you about so many extra details that are possible, therefore I am trying to make it clear what we will
do in class and what things you can do on your own time. One thing is for certain; once you see the
types of designs you can create with the strips you will want to get more and start playing.

A2 - Anne Lise Laursen
Flowers in paperclay - Flamingo Flower, Calla, Poppy, Iris, Petunia and Roses
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
Teaching language is Danish. The teacher understands and
speaks English.
You will model flowers of delicious Japanese paperclay. It is a
very lightweight material that air dries. It can be cut with
scissors, so you get the right shape. The most important tool is
a toothpick. You will receive paperclay in white, red, yellow,
green, blue, black and brown. You mix the colors, so you get
the color you want.
The clay is stored in airtight bag with wipes to retain
moisture. If it gets too dry, wrap it in wet wipes, so it can
absorb moisture and become elastic again.
Good dexterity is an advantage!
Bring your own pots for planting.
Some pots will be for sale.
Material fee 300 DKK to be paid to the teacher during class.

A3 - Jamie Carrington
Sculpting Class
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
Teaching language is English.
Students will learn, or relearn, the new technique for sculpting their own character figures both
male and female. Students start off by learning how to sculpt the face and the new wired hands until
they feel comfortable enough yo experiment with a range of expressions, age and weight. The
figures - and there will be more than one - are now ready for costuming at home later.
Written instructions for all the process will be there for each student to take home with them and all
materials. tools and equipment will be supplied by the teacher. Students need to bring small sharp
scissors, a work lamp and magnifiers.
The material fee is 400 DKK to be paid to the teacher in class.

A4 - Jens Torp
Sterling Silver Toast Rack 1900
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
Teaching language is English. The teacher understands and speaks Danish.
Here we have a typical piece for the breakfast table. The toast rack stands on balled feet with a
hooped handle. The techniques I will teach in this class are sawing, filing, shaping wires, drilling
and soldering. You will be taught how to prepare the rack for polishing and shown how to achieve
the final result.
Material cost £40 (about 400 DKK) to be paid to the teacher during class.

A5 - Angie Scarr
Small vegetable garden, or part of a larger garden
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
Teaching language is English
This garden will be taught partly in and
partly out of the classroom. Those who
sign up for the class will receive
instructions on where to source the
materials to make a base of their desired
size and quality or a small base can be
provided at a reasonable cost for the
small garden which can be completed in
the 3 days. You may make a larger
garden which would be completed at
home.
(Anyone on the course in 2014 can make some leeks for their garden in advance, as leeks will not
be covered in 2015. Please ask for extra information on how best to produce these for the garden.)
In the three days we will learn how to make different types of garden leaves. And complete Brassica
plants (Cabbage cauliflower and Brussel sprouts) and standing wired plants (peppers, chilli peppers
etc) some more delicate leaved fruiting plants such as strawberry and raspberry. The amount
completed in class will depend on students own speed and determination to 'finish'. As with all my
classes what you take home is more important than what you complete in class and students will
create at their own pace. For example completing the very large garden is a project which took me
several weeks! So it is very much up to each student whether they want to complete a small project
or start a larger one. The major material used will be polymer clay.
Materials to be brought in by student:
Base, covering materials, Slates stones pebbles etc.
Soil blocks Information will be provided.

for you to your size requirements at additional cost).

B1 - Bill Robertson
Decorative Wooden Serving Trays
Thursday and Friday
Teaching language is English
There are so many uses for decorative
little trays around the house. It could be
to bring a single cup of tea out to the
garden or serve a whole group coffee in
the living room; to take breakfast up to
the bedroom or bring a calling card or
the mail into the study. Any way you
look at it trays can be found in every
room in the house from our current time
to hundreds of years in the past. Since
we can have trays all over, why not
make them pretty ones?
This class will concentrate on designing and making wonderfully detailed trays covered with
geometric strips made from many different kinds of woods. To save time we are going to use the
full-scale border strips produced by Miniatures in Tune’s co-founder Ursula Dyrbye-Skovsted at
Intarsia. By using these strips an almost infinite number of designs and patterns can be created.
If you think this is nothing more than glueing some strips down to a piece of wood, you are quite
wrong. What this class will teach you is how to glue these down without warping the wood and
also, how to create interesting scale designs by cutting and joining the strips in very unconventional
ways. This will be mostly done with hand tools however there will be a little molding done on a
Proxxon MF70 and optional handles can be turned on a lathe. Since we are quite sure the few
machines needed can be borrowed locally there will be no need for those traveling to bring heavy
tools.
The plan is for each student to
make at least a few trays, either
choosing from the instructor’s
designs or working up their
own. A variety of edge
treatments including moldings
and handle types will then
complete the tray. Students will
be able to make as many as
time and materials allow. A
choice of either a shellac or oil
finish will be available.
This class is designed to be easier than many of the past classes offered by this instructor insuring a
greater chance of completion while still teaching many skills and having fun. One thing is for
certain; once you have mastered the technique there is no end to the designs you can create with
these strips.

Flowers of paper - Orchid and Medinilla
Thursday and Friday
Teaching language is Danish. The teacher understands
and speaks English.
Orchid: We paint watercolor paper and cut flowers and
leaves with scissors. Bulbs are formed in Fimo and
mounted on a piece of bark. With paint and fine brush
the plant is given a little character.
Medinilla: The flowers are cut out of fine rice paper,
painted pink. Knobs are made of colored glue on stems.
Leaves are cut with scissors.
Bring your own pot for planting.
Some pots will be for sale.
Material fee 250 DKK to be paid to the teacher during
class.

B3 - Jamie Carrington
Costume class - The 1950’s Givenchy Evening Gown
Thursday and Friday
Teaching language is English
Based on an original Givenchy evening
gown of the 1950s this will
demonstrate the construction of a
strapless bodice, incorporating the
corset, which would, in real size, be
boned, giving the gown a perfect
finish.
The complete model will also have the
typical full petticoat to support the
skirt.
For students finishing the gown early
we can replicate the model as a day
dress in printed silk to be hung on a
padded hanger.
Silk, the pattern, sewing equipment
and the mannequin will be supplied by
the teacher, students need to bring
small sharp scissors for both paper and
silk, a work lamp and, if needed,
magnifiers.
Material fee is 200 DKK to be paid to
the teacher in class.

B4 - Jens Torp
Cake slice 1880 or a Single handled tasting bowl 1690.
Thursday and Friday
Teaching language is English. The teacher understands and speaks Danish.
In this class you have a choice of two items. The cake slice will encompass filing, sawing, shaping,
drilling and piercing. You have a choice of designs to pierce out of the slice. You may make it very
simple if you wish. The bowl will involve sawing, doming, soldering, drilling and piercing. Again a
simpler design can be used. With both pieces the final task will be to polish and buff-up in order to
allow them to shine on the table. If time permits the students are welcome to make the second piece
also.
Material cost £30 (about 300 DKK) to be paid to the teacher during class.

B5 - Angie Scarr
Almond tree/fruit tree
Thursday and Friday
Teaching language is English
For this 2 day class we will make an almond/fruit tree which can stand alone or be incorporated into
the garden project from the previous class. Once again the information for completing the base will
be provided well ahead of time and materials, which can be very reasonably priced and can be
chosen from a number of suppliers.
In the class we will make and paint the tree on the first day. If time permits we will start attaching
the leaves. On the morning of the second day we will make and wire the almonds/or fruits and then
finish attaching the leaves. This will be a relaxed class as the leaves are already made for you and
sticking them on is a meditative if a slightly repetitive process!

The Night Before Christmas, a Carrousel (1823)
Thursday and Friday
Teaching language is English.
A carrousel pop-up book with 5 scenes of the yuletide poem of Clement Clark Moore, and a
separate volume with the complete poem.
Unique skills, including precision cutting, folding and bookbinding.
Starting with a offset printed piece of paper and in two days
is will grow into a three dimensional pop-up book.
The book is held open with two red Christmas bells.
The separate volume with the complete poem will be bound with a pamflet stitch.
Material fee € 20.00 (about 160 DKK) to be paid to the teacher during class.
