Kindergarten News
Happy New Year! Welcome Back! The Santa pictures were a great success. Thank
you for supporting our trip to the zoo in May. And the Kindergarten Winter
Program was wonderful. It was a night to remember. The kindergarteners have
hopped right into the New Year. They are working hard in our language arts
program studying “Neighborhoods”. We are also learning all 52
letters and 26 letter sounds. We have been putting the letter
sounds together to blend words. Some words we have been
blending are: mud, rat, men, and fun. Our new January sight
words are: are, is, for, you. In math, we are counting and
recognizing numbers to 20. Please remember to practice your
kindergarten flash cards.

First Grade News
The One Hundred Days of School presentations were wonderful!
Please continue to work on oral presentations because the
students will be giving another presentation this spring!
Thank you for attending the First Grade Family Night. It was
wonderful to see our students and their families reading
together! We had a great time!
Our students have been working very hard. In math they have been comparing
numbers and adding two-digit numbers. In language arts, we have learned how to
decode long vowel words. All students are working on
monitoring. They are listening and looking at their reading to
check if they are right or wrong.
Reading Counts is in full swing. Many students are now taking
quizzes and earning points. All students have made amazing
progress in their reading. We are so proud of all of our
awesome readers!
February is a very important month! Our students will be preparing for 2nd
Trimester assessments. Please continue to read and work with them at home.
We appreciate everything our families do to help our students succeed.
Second Grade News
We’ve been working hard in second grade this month! We finished up our
reading unit Express Yourself, where we learned how we can express
ourselves through things like writing and dance. Now we are reading about
ways we can work together. In math we’ve been working on place value to 100,
have continued to work hard at learning our addition and subtraction facts, and
are starting to do 3 digit addition and subtraction problems. We want to remind
everyone that the computer lab is now open before school from 7:50-8:10 Monday
-Thursday. The computer lab is a great way for us to work on our math facts by
playing Fast Math and also is a great place to play Lexia and take Reading
Counts Quizzes. We look forward to learning several new things this month!

Third Grade News
Third graders are just completing our third unit in Treasures. The teachers have been
adapting the activities to better match our new Common Core standards. The unit
theme was Express Yourself and all of the stories were about how different individuals
expressed themselves. The students learned how to look at things from a different point
of view, how to search the internet for information and decide what sources were reliable
and valid. The students also wrote many letters, including thank you letters, letters to
parents requesting specific gifts for Christmas, and then finally a letter to a character
from a story they read.
In math the students completed the multiplication and division topics. Parents should
continue to make sure the students keep the facts sharp by asking them answers to
problems or using flash cards. The class also has completed a topic on patterns. They
had to figure out geometric and numerical patterns and explain what the rule was so
that they could determine the next numbers that would follow the rule and complete the
pattern. Third graders are now on to geometry. They will be learning many new
vocabulary words and must know the terms well to be able to explain how shapes are
related and why they are included in certain categories. Please ask your students about
these new vocabulary words and ask them to relate them to objects in the real world.
Finally, the third grade will be performing for a short Third Grade Family Night. The
students will be asked to wear a white shirt and dark pants or skirt. The performance
will be on February 12 at 5:30. It should last about 30 minutes, and you will be able to
see your children EXPRESS themselves using dance, poetry, or song.
Fourth Grade News
Fourth graders started off 2014 with a positive attitude and excitement
towards learning! We are busy using our reading strategies to read and
understand informational text. During their 4th grade year, students have to
become more independent readers. Students are working in groups to read,
understand, and present information about California Native Americans. They
also have the opportunity to do some hands on activities to experience what
life would have been like for the Native Americans.
In math, 4th grade is focusing on fractions. Students are learning many
different strategies to visualize and manipulate fractions. They are also
applying what they learn about fractions to real-life situations and
understanding the importance of fractions in everyday life. Please ask your
student about how they might have to use fractions in places other than
school.

Fifth Grade News
By: Sierra Murphy and Celeste Lievanos
In fifth grade we are learning how to multiply fractions by fractions. Also,
we are learning the parts of the digestive system in science. In
P.E. we are learning how to pass and bump the volleyball to
our partners with Mr. Gomez. Mr. Rector, our music teacher, is
teaching us how to play music with recorders,
and we receive stars as we pass each level. In
the library, we are checking out books that are challenging
because our February reading challenge is 25,000 words. On
February 12, we will be starting the D.A.R.E. Program with
Officer Knutson from the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office.
D.A.R.E. stands for Drug, Abuse, Resistance, and Education.
That’s all for Fifth Grade News!
See you next time!

Last year plans were made to improve our track. Between then and now, a lot of work was done. For example, Mrs. Geyer raised money to pay for the track and the new field. Since the new grass was put in, not so
many students have been tripping over holes and bumps. Our field was made larger so multiple sports games
can go on. There have been more football, soccer, kickball and tag games going on since there is more room.
Students who have fun-day-run-day now have to run less laps to get a mile.
Recently, Mr. Gomez and Mrs. Geyer, along with others, coordinated the installation of new exercise equipment. The school purchased a rock wall, leg exerciser, pull up bar, and the chain ladder. All together, the four
pieces of equipment, wood chips and the barrier around it cost $20,298.78. The taxes were about $1000. That’s
a lot of money!!! We use this exercise equipment for P.E. and just fun at recess.
Mrs. Geyer couldn’t do all this work all by herself, so she needed some helpers. A lot of people contributed
their time to help make these projects happen so the kids at Arbuckle Elementary can have some more fun and
healthy choices at recess. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Geyer, Mr. Gomez, Mr. Charter, Mr. Miller, Mr.
Hoebel, Mr. Washburn, Mr. O’Sullivan, Mr. Reyna, Duffy, and all the other people who wanted to make our
school even better.
P. S. Our school has so many nice people, so personally I think it is the Best School Ever!
