THE LETHBRIDGE SHOPPER, Week of October 18, 2014, Page 7
Caring for an elderly relative at home
(MS) Decisions about
providing care for an
aging loved one are seldom easy.Various options
exist in terms of elder
care, including assisted
living facilities and nursing homes. Seniors who
are self-sufficient may be
able to stay in a retirement community or
active living building. In
other instances, the best
course of action is to have
an elderly relative move
in with family members.
Nearly 10 million
adult children over age 50
now care for an aging
parent. Care is defined as
helping with feeding,
bathing, dressing, and
other personal care
needs, going beyond driving a parent to appointments or helping them
with financial matters.
Taking care of a
senior requires a profound commitment and
can completely disrupt a
person's life, both at
home and at work. Men
and women faced with
caring for an aging parent
at home may want to
employ several strategies
to make that transition go
as smoothly as possible.
Talk to the senior
about your options.
Making decisions together will be best for everyone involved. It can be
challenging to discuss
mortality and whether or
not elderly parents or relatives can properly care
for themselves. Broach
the subject well in
advance of making any
plans so you will have
some understanding of
how the senior feels
about the situation and
what would make him or
her most comfortable.
Your parents may already
have a plan in place.
Establish a caregiving budget. Caring for
the elderly is expensive.
Before a senior can be
welcomed into your
home, you must first
determine which financial changes must be
made to accommodate
this person. Will a parent
be contributing to a portion of the expenses or
paying rent? Is it feasible
for you to reduce hours at
work to care for this individual? Once you have
the numbers in black and
white, you can better
assess your situation.
·Make
physical
modifications.
Your
home may not be
equipped and safe for an
elderly resident. You may
need to add a private
space for your parent or
relative, and install night
lights, secured railings,
grab bars, ramps, a shower chair, and anti-slip surfaces. You may need to
build an extension on the
home or completely renovate what you have to
make the space safe.
Aim for stability.
Moving and changing
routines can be especially
stressful for seniors who
are used to their own
schedules and habits.
Transfer furniture and
mementos from their
home into yours. Encourage seniors to maintain a
social schedule and invite
friends over. Try to help
your loved one keep his
or her doctors and, if possible, take them to shop
where
they
have
shopped in the past.
These opportunities will
make the transition to a
new home easier.
Discuss finances. It's
essential to understand
your loved one's financial
situation. Make lists of his
or her assets and any
insurance policies in his
or her name. Understand
which health procedures
are covered and discuss
ways to finance any procedures or medications
that are not covered by
your loved one's policy.
Ask if your loved one
wants you to manage his
or her finances or when
he or she may feel this is
necessary. Professional
help, such as an attorney,
financial planner or a
geriatric care manager,
can make it easier to
understand the legalities
and subtleties of these
arrangements.
Make time for yourself. Caring for the elderly

Adaptability important in the workplace
(MS) Employee turnover, downsizing,
an economy in flux, and many other factors contribute to the ever-changing face
of business. While men and women might
once have hoped to grow old with a company, today's workers are more inclined to
switch jobs several times before they
retire.
Companies routinely evolve to serve
their customers, a learning process that
will include some trial and error. Companies should be willing to try new strategies as they adapt to ever-changing mar-
kets. Workers who are flexible and able to
adapt to adjustments in the workplace are
among the most desirable employees.
What defines adaptability varies
depending on the profession, but taking
the time to learn how to accommodate
the needs of bosses and other workers
can be a great way for men and women to
ensure their long-term success.
Recognize the likelihood of change.
Professional environments are fluid,
and employees who resist change may
find their employers deem them expend-
able. Employees must recognize that
change is part of the business world and
must go with the flow to maintain their
good standing with employers.
Look for benefits.
A willingness to be flexible can benefit employees just as much as it benefits
employers. Employees may find that a
flexible schedule or the ability to telecommute presents new opportunities that can
make life easier.
Keep lines of communication open.

for companies that are willing to try new
things. Keep lines of communication with
supervisors open to ensure your ideas are
heard, and encourage subordinates to
offer their ideas at every turn.
Don't equate flexibility with being a
pushover.
Flexibility should not go so far that an
employee feels taken advantage of. As
companies change, the process is best if it
involves give and take on the part of
employees and their employers.

conflict at work. It is easy to find common ground and steer

particular direction. Your instincts rarely steer you wrong.

LETHBRIDGE HOCKEY HOUNDS
The Lethbridge Hockey Hounds have been proud supporters of
hockey in Lethbridge since their inception over three decades
ago. This group of devoted gentlemen continues to support not
only the Hurricanes, but Lethbridge Minor Hockey, the Lethbridge
Athletic Association and the University of Lethbridge Men’s
Pronghorn Hockey Team. In its past the group supported nearly
every major hockey team to make it’s home in Lethbridge. This list
included seasons with the Lethbridge Sugar Kings, the Lethbridge
Native Sons and Lethbridge Broncos. The Hounds were also
involved in bringing the Calgary Wranglers to town in 1987-1988,
this team would become the Lethbridge Hurricanes as we know
them today. The Lethbridge Hockey Hounds were started in 1971
by Rex Johnson, John Kobal, Ralph Guzzi and Bob Snowden with
an 8 member group which now numbers 30+ volunteers. They
supported the Sugar Kings, Longhorns, Native Suns, and the 75
Winter Games. Their focus turned to the Lethbridge Broncos after
their arrival in 1974. In 1987 their efforts were rekindled with the
Lethbridge Hurricanes. In 1990, the Hockey Hounds were
inducted into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame. In 2007 they
were inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in the Builder's
Category and were recipients of the Hockey Alberta Centennial
Award in recognition of their support of hockey in Lethbridge.
Through their 50-50 sales they have contributed over $1.2 million
in support of the Lethbridge Hurricanes Education Fund. The
Lethbridge Hurricanes are proud to thank the Hockey Hounds for
their continued support and hope that they will continue to be
involved with the club for many years to come.

THE CANADIAN TIRE TEDDY BEAR TOSS
Be Sure to Attend Saturday, December 6 2014 at 7:00 pm
A history of the teddy bear toss is a
popular Christmas season promotion at
many minor and junior hockey arenas
throughout North America. Fans are
encouraged to bring teddy bears to the
game, and to throw them onto the ice when
the home team scores its first goal. Toques
can also be tossed this year. The toys are
then gathered up to be donated as Christmas presents to hospitals and charities. In
many cases, the players themselves personally donate some of the bears to children at
area hospitals. The tradition is said to have
started in Kitchener, Ontario at Kitchener
Rangers games.
The tradition is perhaps the most popular in the Western Hockey League cities of
Lethbridge, Calgary, Alberta and Portland,
Oregon.
The 7,485 fans and supporters of the
Portland Winter Hawks were the first to
break the WHL and CHL Teddy Bear Toss
record in the 2006–07 season with an onice donation of 14,361 stuffed animals Saturday, November 25, 2006. The teddy bears
rained down from the stands when Kyle
Bailey broke a scoreless tie exactly one
minute into the overtime period. This
record was eventually broken by the fans of
the Calgary Hitmen less than a month later.
On December 10, when Ryan White scored
a short-handed goal 14 minutes into the
first period of their game against the Prince
George Cougars. 15,540 teddy bears were
thrown onto the ice by the 16,380 fans in
attendance.
On November 24, 2007, the Portland
Winterhawks briefly reclaimed the record
with 20,372 stuffed animals coming from
the 6,343 fans at the Memorial Coliseum on
the 10th Annual Teddy Bear Toss Night.
However, fans had failed to realise that the
goal that initiated the toss had been disallowed. The record quickly fell again, as six
nights later, fans of the Lethbridge Hurricanes set a new mark of 22,736 bears. The
Hitmen once again reclaimed their record
on December 2, 2007, as 26,919 bears hit
the ice when Ian Duval scored against the
Cougars.
