Joe’s Notes My dear friends, Due to an unusual glitch with scheduling, I had Mass this past Monday at both Seacrest and Apple Rehab. With morning Mass and a funeral, that made four liturgies in one day. While I was pretty tired by the end, I was also very happy. I really do love going to the nursing homes, rehabs, and assisted living places. I know a few people who think it very odd of me to say that, but I do. I grew up around older people. My mother was the recreation director at a nursing home when I was young, and she brought me in to volunteer all the time. My first job was in the kitchen of another health care facility. It’s like being home for me when I go. But that isn’t the only reason. I just like going. Sometimes, we all need to see life from another perspective. It helps us appreciate what we have. It’s when we’re our healthiest that we’re most likely to complain over tiny problems. It’s when we are freest that we think we’re the most constrained. It’s when we have money that we complain the most about need. Our vision can be greatly clarified by seeing life through other eyes. Put yourself in a new setting. Once you do, look at your own life. Does it really seem that bad? I find it makes me rejoice at the many blessings I have. I am grateful for that. Joyfully yours in Christ, Fr. Joe ? Ask Father ? It’s hard to explain the rationale. By all outward signs, it should drive me crazy. It’s the one place on earth people have trouble hearing me and I’m asked to speak up! There’s always some announcement blaring over a loudspeaker, or folks coming and going throughout the celebration of the liturgy. You may have a person who sits there making noises the whole time that could be distracting. One time, I had a woman cycling through things people had said to her that day: “Hello there, dear.” “Who are you?” “Shut up!” “Get the hell out of here!” It made for interesting listening. As I was in the midst of the Consecration saying about Jesus, “…he broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying…” she, at that very moment, yelled, “Shut the hell up! Get out of here!” I smiled and said: “No, he didn’t, but he may have thought it!” I laughed and continued. She had no idea what she was saying – though I know a few people who’d love to say it to me – so it was impossible to become angry. Besides, I have a funny story now to tell. It makes me happy to go and connect the people who are there with the bigger Church outside their walls. Some of these people use to attend Mass faithfully throughout their lives and find it tough to be cut off from it. It brings them great comfort and joy to attend. It makes you really appreciate the gift of the Eucharist when you see them receive it. I love being able to talk with them and listen. They can give you wonderful insights into life by what they have to say. Most of all, it’s so joyous to celebrate with a congregation that wants to attend rather than with one which has to be there. Those are all great gifts to me, and I’m always happy to go. Question: Can divorced Catholic’s receive Communion? Answer: Well, it depends on the circumstances. Any person who is properly disposed can receive a sacrament. As long we don’t have grave sins on our souls, we are free to share at the table of the Lord. A person who is divorced and not remarried would be able to receive the Eucharist, even without an annulment. (That person could even serve as a Eucharistic Minister.) Contrary to what some people believe, you are not excommunicated for being divorced. The issue of divorce and remarriage is the problem. If people were divorced and remarried, that union would have to be blessed by the Church. This would require an annulment from the previous marriage to happen (either by a lack of form or a formal annulment). Once that’s done, then those Catholics would be able to receive the Eucharist. When divorced Catholics remarry outside the Church (or a single person marries a divorced Catholic outside of the Church), they are asked to refrain from receiving the Eucharistic. They are not excommunicated either, they are just asked not to receive the Blessed Sacrament. They are still members of the Church community, and they can be anointed and share in our liturgical prayers. They are always members of the fold and are to be treated with dignity and respect. Should you be in this category and would like to find out about your options to have your union blessed (annulments, lack of form, internal forum, etc.), please call me to ask. Maybe there’s something we can do to bring you back to share in the Eucharistic. Page 8 SAVE THE DATE Our Lady of Victory School Christmas Boutique Sat., Nov. 22 And Sun., Nov. 23 Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers, and Parents Peanut Allergies and Communion – Gluten-free Eucharist More info to come! Altar Server Training We are in great need of altar servers at both parishes! Any young people who have received First Holy Communion from grade 4 through high school are all welcome. There are two different training sessions (you only need to make one). Monday, October 27th at OLOV at 6:30PM or Tuesday, October 28th at SJV at 6:30PM You may attend either, regardless of the parish or Mass time you want to serve. ATTENTION! We have a number of people in our parish who have peanut allergies. There are no nut products at all in our Eucharistic wafers, so it is not much of an issue for most people. Having said this, we do have a few young people in the parishes with rather severe allergies. They not only react to eating them, but also react to coming in any physical contact with them. Keeping this in mind, we are trying to protect these people from any health risks. We will make sure that at least one Eucharistic Minister at every weekend Mass will be free of contact with peanuts and peanut products. To make sure you know who that minister is, we will assign them to specific location in the church. At St. John Vianney, the minster serving the cry room area who stands by the ambo (the podium where we read), will be the designated minister. At Our Lady of Victory, the two ministers serving on the choir side of the church who also serve the handicapped section will be the designated peanut free ministers. This policy will go into effect on the weekend of October 4th & 5th. A reminder to all people with gluten allergies, we have gluten-free hosts available. Please, tell an usher, deacon or priest before Mass to make sure one is placed on the altar to be consecrated. (They cannot be reserved in the tabernacle, as it is not a gluten-free location.) At St. John Vianney, the EucharisPaint Night at St. John tic Minister will bring you Communion by Vianney Hall to benefit the tabernacle, and at Our Lady of Victory, Beacon on the Hill, Satthe minister will bring you Communion at urday, November 15th at eh foot of the ramp near the Holy Family statue. 7p.m. For questions, call Fr. Joe at the rectory office. SAVE THE DATE More details to follow. Bring Friend—All are welcome! We hope this helps all of our parishioners be free of worries as they receive the Eucharist knowing we are taking all steps to keep them happy and healthy.
