• Fresh off of one of its top offensive performances in recent history, the
Drake University football team returns to the road to face Valparaiso in
the Bulldogs’ fourth Pioneer Football League contest of the season.
• Drake is 2-1 in the PFL standings after a 51-14 throttling of Davidson on
Oct. 11 that saw the Bulldogs rack up 606 yards of total offense, including
343 on the ground.
• Sophomore Conley Wilkins became the first Bulldog to run for three
touchdowns in a game since 2007 and finished with a career-high 110
yards for his second career 100-yard game.
• He was complemented by Matthew Denning’s career-high 125 receiving
yards and two touchdowns, the first of his career.
• Defensively, Drake has held two of its three PFL opponents to fewer
than 215 yards of offense and the Bulldogs are averaging a league-high
four sacks per game against conference competition.
• The Bulldogs also lead the PFL in total defense in league games by
allowing just 275 yards per game and a scant 78.3 yards per game on the

• Valparaiso is winless in conference play but 2-4 on the season after
defeating Missouri Baptist, 55-7, in the last outing.

• Additionally, four of the team’s eight touchdown
passes have been snagged by tight ends.

PFL in tackles with 113 to earn a spot on the 2013
4
postseason All-PFL squad as a linebacker.
• Duwe, a defensive back, earned second-team
honors last season after leading the team with
three interceptions and 42 tackles.
• The Bulldogs’ punter, Cam Bohnert also earned
a spot on the preseason All-PFL team after earning first-team honors in 2013. Of his 50 punts that
season, nine traveled more than 50 yards and 17
were put inside the 20-yard line. Another 14 were
fair caught to give him a season average of 39.8
yards per punt.

FOX ADDS SIX NEW ASSISTANTS
• First-year Drake University head football coach
Rick Fox has six new assistants on his staff with
Brad Pole, Todd Stepsis, Allen Smith, Dominic
Robinson, Matt Purdom and Munir Prince joining
the Bulldogs.
• Of the six new assistant coaches, four have previous collegiate experience as coordinators while
Pole brings more than a decade of head coaching
experience to Fox’s staff.
• Pole will serve as the Bulldogs’ pass-game and
recruiting coordinator. The veteran coach has
more than three decades of collegiate coaching
experience most recently as the offensive coordinator at Morningside College in 2012-13. There
he helped guide the Mustangs to a 13-1 record
and an appearance in the NAIA national championship game.
• Stepsis will serve as Fox’s defensive coordinator
following six seasons in the same role at Division
II power Saginaw Valley State. There, he helped
coach the Cardinals to a 44-23 record, threeconsecutive GLIAC North Division titles and three
NCAA playoff berths.
• Allen Smith joins Fox’s staff following six seasons at St. Scholastica where he was the defensive coordinator the past two seasons. At Drake,
he will oversee the team’s linebackers. In his
two seasons guiding St. Scholastica’s defense,
the Saints boasted the top defense in the Upper
Midwest Athletic Conference while winning a pair
of conference titles with two NCAA Division III
playoff appearances.
• Drake’s new cornerbacks coach, Dominic Robinson, boasts an impressive background both as
a coach and student-athlete. A graduate of Florida
State and two-sport standout for the Seminoles,
he was signed by the St. Louis Rams and also
drafted by the Minnesota Twins.
• In 2012 he founded 3D Sports Performance in
Des Moines, Iowa, where he worked many camps
and clinics alongside former Drake head coach

Chris Creighton, Rick Fox and the Drake staff prior to Fox adding him to the
staff at Drake. • Matt Purdom, is no stranger to the Bulldogs as he recently
ended his five-year career at Drake following an unfortunate career-ending
knee injury in a 2013 loss at UNI. The anchor of the offensive line, he helped
pave the way for the Bulldogs’ highest offensive output in eight years as a
junior in 2012.
• Munir Prince, who played collegiately at Notre Dame and Missouri joins the
staff after spending a year on campus working with Drake IMG. He will coach
the team’s interior receivers and serve as video coordinator. After suffering
a career-ending injury at Missouri, he worked as a student and graduate
assistant coach.

THE LAST MEETING
The Drake University football team scored 16 unanswered fourth-quarter
points to defeat Valparaiso, 23-10, at Drake Stadium. The win was Drake’s
14th straight home win against a Pioneer Football League opponent.
The Bulldogs held a 371-183 advantage in total yards of offense with 73
of Valparaiso’s yards coming on its lone touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Drake’s defense disrupted the Crusaders all afternoon as the front four limited VU to four rushing yards while recording four sacks, nine tackles for loss,
two fumble recoveries and an interception.
Offensively, Andy Rice threw for 297 yards on 27-of-41 passing with a
touchdown. Eric Saubert had his second consecutive 100-yard game with
104 receiving yards on eight catches with a touchdown. Gary Scott, Jr.
picked up 82 yards receiving out of the backfield, along with 52 rushing
yards.
Despite dominating the Crusaders on offense and defense, Drake couldn’t
capitalize on its scoring opportunities and found itself up by a slim 7-3 margin
heading into the fourth quarter.
That inability to get the ball into the endzone reared its head on Valparaiso’s second drive of the fourth quarter when quarterback Erick Hoffman
found Tony Taibi behind the Drake secondary for a 73-yard touchdown pass
to put the Crusaders up, 10-7, with 11 minutes left in the contest.
Drake went three-and-out on its next series, but a Cam Bohnert may have
been the turning point of the game. The sophomore nailed a 50-yard punt
that was downed at the VU 1-yard line to turn the field on the Crusaders. The
defense kept VU inside its own 5-yard line. When offense got the ball back, it
needed just five plays to find paydirt on a 4-yard dive from Conley Wilkins to
put Drake up 14-10.
The defense, which has generated game-changing plays all season,
continued that trend on Valparaiso’s next drive when Naser Hannoon sacked
and stripped the VU quarterback on his own 22-yard line. Sean Conerty
recovered the ball on the 16-yard line. Despite the incredible field position,
Drake couldn’t punch the ball into the end zone, but managed to convert on
a 31-yard field goal from Bohnert.
Another sack and VU fumble quickly followed, this one forced by Matt
Acree and recovered by John Hugunin on the VU 21-yard line. Hugunin
finished the day with 12 tackles, three for loss, in addition to the fumble
recovery.
This time, the Bulldogs took advantage of the defense’s work with Wilkins
adding his second score of the day on another 4-yard run with 1:18 left in the
game to account for the final 23-10 tally.
Any VU comeback attempt was quickly thwarted when Brad Duwe picked
off the Crusaders on their final drive to seal the win and record the Bulldogs
third turnover of the day.
In the first half, Drake’s defense held Valparaiso to 93 total first-half yards
and set up the offense with prime field position throughout the half to take
a 7-3 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs used that field position on their second
drive putting together a 39-yard scoring drive. The ninth play of the drive saw
Rice find Saubert for the sophomore’s first score of the season.
Valparaiso answered that scored with a 38-yard field goal to close out the
first quarter and account for the 7-3 score that would remain until the fourth
quarter.

DES MOINES, Iowa – – The Drake University
football team fought against an early deficit before
ultimately falling to crosstown foe Grand View,
45-22, in Saturday’s season opener at Drake
Stadium.
The Bulldogs (0-1) and Vikings (1-0) met for
the fifth time in the series before a crowd of 7,248,
the biggest Drake Stadium crowd since 2007. The
Vikings earned their second win all-time against
the Bulldogs thanks largely to a 28-0 first-quarter
lead.
“We can’t come out and play like that in the first
quarter, especially against a talented team like
Grand View,” said first-year Drake head coach
Rick Fox. “Now we fought hard and I couldn’t be
more proud of our guys, and we started to show
the way we were capable of playing. We needed
to get the ball in endzone a couple of times when
we were close, but we can’t dig ourselves that
kind of hole.”
Grand View racked up 518 yards of total offense in the win as quarterback Derek Fulton
threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns while
rushing for 123 yards on 18 carries.
“Offensively, their quarterbacks are so good,”
Fox said. “They both can run and do things with
the ball in their hands and they distribute the ball
so well that it’s tough to defend someone that has
so many weapons.”
The Bulldogs were led by Eric Saubert’s (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) seven catches for 80 yards
while Ryan McKeever (Omaha, Neb.) ran for 86
and Conley Wilkins (Overland Park, Kan.) had
two touchdowns in addition to his 62 yards rushing. John Hugunin (Oswego, Ill.) led the Drake
defense with 10 stops, seven of them solo.
Grand View dominated the opening quarter,
outgaining the Bulldogs 252-18 yards in total
offense to open up a 28-0 lead. Drake appeared
to have early momentum, forcing a Grand View
three-and-out on the Vikings’ first possession and
blocking the ensuing punt. However, the Bulldogs
couldn’t capitalize and punted the ball right back
to the Vikings. Seven plays and 86 yards later
Grand View found the endzone on a 16-yard pass
from Fulton to Jackson Petz.
The Vikings then scored on three of their next
four possessions, the first coming a 56-yard pass
from Fulton to Brady Roland and then a 35-yard
strike to Davion Hurst. The Vikings closed out the
first half with a 3-yard dive from Dorian Ballentine
on a drive keyed by an Nick Bush interception.
Drake added points early in the second quarter
on a 1-yard dive from Wilkins to cap a 13-play,
69-yard drive kept alive by Grand View penalties.
Drake’s defense got two more stops before the
Vikings tacked on another score on a 45-yard
interception return from Adam Wenck to make the
score 35-7 at halftime.
The momentum shifted briefly in the third
quarter as the Bulldogs took the ball 73 yards on
their first possession and scored on a Wilkins run

from six yards out. Wilkins rushed for 32 yards on
the drive before finding the endzone to make the
score 35-14 in favor of Grand View.
Unfortunately, the Vikings answered with a field
goal to extend their lead and added a sack on the
next Bulldog possession to end the quarter. On
Drake’s first play from scrimmage of the fourth
quarter, McKeever uncorked a 50-yard run to put
the Bulldogs into Viking territory. Ten plays later
quarterback Andy Rice (Stevens Point, Wis.)
found a wide open Andrew Yarwood (South Elgin,
Ill.) in the endzone. A Wilkins two-point conversion
shifted the momentum back in the Bulldogs’ favor
at 38-22.
An on-side kick caught the Vikings off guard
and set up the Bulldogs on the Grand View
48-yard line in hopes of staging a comeback. Unfortunately for Drake, that drive stalled and Grand
View answered with a scoring drive capped by a
30-yard touchdown strike from Fulton to Roland
to account for the final score with 4:54 left in the
game.

DES MOINES, Iowa – A 2-yard touchdown leap
by Conley Wilkins ended more than 45 minutes
of scoreless football as Drake University defeated
visiting Truman State in overtime, 13-7, Saturday
night at Drake Stadium in a defensive showcase.
Truman State (0-1) started the extra period
on offense and the Drake (1-1) defense made
plays – as it had all night – stopping TSU on the
Drake 20-yard line and forcing a 37-yard field goal
attempt. The kick knuckled through the line of
scrimmage, but was well short and off the mark to
set up Drake’s overtime push.
Needing just a field goal to win, Drake’s offense
stayed conservative and put the ball in Wilkins’
hands for a gain of five combined yards on his
first two carries. Quarterback Andy Rice then
dropped back and found Eric Saubert 17 yards
down field to give Drake first down and goal on
the 3-yard line. Two plays later, Wilkins jumped
over the pile at the line of scrimmage to break the
tie and secure head coach Rick Fox’s first win at
Drake.
Wilkins finished the game with 88 yards on 21
carries while T.J. James saw his first action in two
seasons with 64 yards on 10 carries, including
a 43-yard sprint. Saubert led the receiving corps
again with 79 yards on eight catches as the Drake
offense put up 317 yards of offense.
Truman State was led on offense by 92 rushing
yards from Garrett White and 148 passing yards
from Devonte Graham.
Despite the offense putting points on the board,
Drake’s defense and special teams were the stars
of the win. The defense limited TSU to just 290
yards of total offense with John Hugunin recording
15 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss while Taylor
Coleman added 11 stops on a night that saw the
defense record three sacks and 11 tackles behind
the line of scrimmage. Of All-PFL punter Cam
Bohnert’s nine punts, only one was returned – for
a scant three yards – with the others fair caught
and two downed inside the TSU 20-yard line.
After falling behind early its week one contest,
Drake corrected that error by scoring on its first
drive on an 11-play, 67-yard march down the field.
Rice, who was 5-of-5 passing for 59 yards on the
drive, found Saubert over the middle for an 11yard touchdown to go up, 7-0, early.
Drake’s next drive stalled and gave TSU the
ball on the Drake 45-yard line. Eight plays later,
TSU tied the game on 1-yard dive from Devonte
Black at the close of the first quarter. The drive
was extended by a Drake roughing the passer
penalty to put Truman State into the red zone.
Neither squad got back on the scoreboard in
the first half as Drake didn’t cross midfield while
Truman State threatened once, but a 42-yard field
goal attempt struck the right upright to keep the
score tied at halftime.
The second half was more of a defensive battle
with the teams combining to punt on 10 straight
possessions until the final minutes of the fourth

quarter when the Drake offense shifted into gear.
With 3:45 left on the clock, Drake took possession on its own 20-yard line and continued
to employ glimpses of an option attack to march
down the field with Rice rushing for 15 yards the
first play and Conley adding a 15-yard scramble
of his own to take the ball to midfield.
Eight plays later Drake worked the ball down to
the Truman State 20-yard line with one second on
the clock to set up a potential 37-yard game-winning field goal. Unfortunately for the home team,
the attempt sailed wide right to force the extra
period and set up Drake’s eventual game-winning
score.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Drake University football
team showed flashes of promise, but ultimately
lacked consistency in a 38-13 loss at Western
Illinois.
The Bulldogs fell behind early, 14-0, before
rallying to trim that margin to 14-10 at halftime.
However, four-straight scores from the Leathernecks proved to be too much to overcome in
Drake’s final non-conference game of the season.
“We’re not interested in the moral victories and
the should have, could have things,” Drake head
coach Rick Fox said. “We’re a good football team,
but we have to improve in being consistent in our
execution. Our effort is there and we’re playing together as a team. But we need consistent
execution.”
Drake’s Bob Quilico, Jr. had one of the best
games of his career with 13 solo tackles from his
safety spot to keep Western Illinois big gains to a
minimum while John Hugunin added 10 stops.
The Drake offense was outgained, 423-to-311
yards, as WIU collected 218 rushing yards thanks
to a 130-yard day from J.C. Baker.
The Bulldogs’ offense was paced by 86 total
yards from Conley Wilkins – 66 rushing and 20
receiving – while Grant Menard had a career-high
71 yards receiving.
Facing an early 14-0 deficit, the Drake offense
shifted into gear in the second quarter as quarterback Andy Rice found Menard over the middle for
a 16-yard gain and the Bulldogs’ first first down of
the day as Fox started to call for a hurry-up attack
against the Leathernecks. Thirteen plays later, the
Bulldogs found themselves in the redzone, but
couldn’t convert before turning the ball over on
downs.
“We want to be changing up the tempo,” Fox
said of the hurry-up’s success. “For that to work
you have to get things going and then you can
manipulate the tempo. We had those opportunities and that was really helping us today.”
Despite not putting points on the board, the
drive gave the defense, which saw 21 snaps in
the first quarter, a much needed rest and the unit
responded by forcing punts on WIU’s next two
possessions.
With 6:37 left in the first half, Drake took possession at midfield and with Cody Thibault at
quarterback. Thibault took the Bulldogs 51 yards
on seven plays with a pair of passes to Menard
for 35 yards before he found Michael Hudson in
the endzone from 10 yards out to trim WIU’s lead
to 14-7 with 3:41 left in the half.
“He did some nice things and that was a big
drive to get us that touchdown,” Fox said of
Thibault’s series.
The final minute of the half saw plenty of
excitement as Drake punted the ball away with 51
seconds left. Nine seconds later, the Bulldog offense was back on the field thanks to John Bloss
recording Drake’s second interception of the day
and returning the ball 19 yards to the WIU 47-yard

“That’s been an emphasis – to get the ball –
and that interception gave us a chance to tie it
up,” Fox said. “We ended up with a field goal, but
it put us in a good situation heading into the locker
room”
Four plays later, Drake moved the ball to the
WIU 26-yard with three seconds on the clock and
called upon kicker Ben Tesson The sophomore
split the uprights as time expired to trim WIU’s
lead to 14-10 at halftime.
Unfortunately for Drake, it couldn’t maintain that
momentum after halftime as WIU scored on four
of its first five possessions of the second half to
build up an insurmountable 38-10 lead.
The first of those scores came via kind field
position with WIU needing to go just 34 yards
to score followed by a blocked punt that Brad
Blumenshine returned 27 yards to go up 28-10.
Midway through the fourth quarter, WIU quarterback Trenton Norvell hit Quadarias Mireles for
a 71-yard touchdown to account for the last of
WIU’s 38 points.

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University football team opened up conference play with a 21-6
win over visiting Marist in the Pioneer Football
League opener for both teams.
Drake’s defense set the tone all afternoon by
holding Marist to just 211 total yards of offense.
Led by Taylor Coleman’s nine tackles, the Bulldogs racked up five sacks and seven stops for a
loss. Brett Park paced that attack behind the line
of scrimmage with two sacks in addition to his
seven tackles.
Offensively, Drake posted 308 yards of offense in a penalty plagued game that saw the
teams whistled for a combined 24 penalties for
202 yards. Quarterback Andy Rice threw for
one touchdown and ran for another with Conley
Wilkins pushing the pile across the line for the
Bulldogs’ other score. Rice finished the afternoon
26-of-34 passing for 248 yards with his passes
being distributed to nine different receivers.
Marist’s Matt Tralli hauled in eight passes for
93 yards from quarterback Ed Achzinger in the
losing effort.
The win continued Drake’s tradition of homefield advantage as the Bulldogs have now won 22
of their last 24 home conference games and 32 of
their last 38 overall home games.
Marist opened the scoring courtesy of strong
field position at midfield and got inside the red
zone on the first play from scrimmage of the drive
via a 30-yard completion from Achziger to Armani
Martin. Penalties and Park’s second sack of the
day pushed the Red Foxes back near midfield,
but a roughing the passer penalty gave Marist
new life. Three plays later, the Red Foxes settled
for a 21-yard field goal from Mike Maccarone with
6:14 on the clock to take an early 3-0 lead.
Penalties and interceptions kept the Bulldog
offense in check for much of the first half with
Marist picking off Rice twice, once on a tipped
pass. The second interception came on the Marist
5-yard line as the Bulldogs were driving when
Landon Moore stepped in front of Rice’s pass and
returned it 15 yards.
Despite the setbacks, Drake’s offense continued to move the ball and finally got on the board
in the waning moments of the first half when
Rice found Neko Graf from eight yards out to pull
ahead, 7-3, with 34.6 seconds left in the half. That
scoring drive spanned 83 yards on 13 plays with
Rice throwing for 81 of his 148 first-half yards on
the drive.
Drake’s second drive of the second half yielded
points with Wilkins’ 3-yard touchdown push that
put Drake up 14-6 with 4:44 left in the period. That
run was set up by Rice’s longest completion of the
day, a 26-yard strike to Grant Menard.
Marist’s next possession saw the Bulldog
defense make another game-changing play with
Bob Quilico, Jr. picking off a pass and returning it
into Marist territory. Quilico would later be ejected
from the contest on a targeting penalty. But his

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four second-half
turnovers by the Drake University football team
held the Bulldogs in check as they fell at Pioneer
Football League leader Jacksonville, 29-14.
The two teams played a relatively even statistical game with Jacksonville gaining 451 yards to
Drake’s 416 yards, however the four-straight third
quarter turnovers gave the Dolphins a definite
advantage on their home turf.
Drake’s defense, and especially the defensive
line, continued its strong play with seven tackles
for loss and three sacks. Matt Acree led the unit
with five tackles and two sacks. Bob Quilico, Jr.
recorded eight tackles and broke up four passes
from his safety position.
Offensively, the Bulldogs were paced by Eric
Saubert’s 79 yards receiving with a touchdown
before he was sidelined with an injury in the third
quarter. Conley Wilkins racked up 57 rushing
yards with a touchdown in the fourth quarter as
Drake rushed for 152 yards and passed for 264.
The Dolphins were paced by Ulysses Bryant’s
140 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns
while quarterback Kade Bell completed 17 of his
34 passes for 275 yards and a touchdown.
Drake broke its trend of slow starts by scoring
first on a 5-yard toss from Andy Rice to Saubert
with 6:26 left in the second quarter. The score
capped a lengthy 13-play, 80-yard drive that
lasted 5:56.
However, Drake was not able to keep that advantage going into halftime as the Dolphins added
a pair of scores to lead 10-7 at intermission. The
first score was a 2-yard touchdown run from
Bryant after a penalty and out-of-bounds kickoff
set Jacksonville up with prime field position. The
Bulldogs attempted to run a 2-minute drill with to
end the half put were stopped on three-straight
incomplete passes before punting the ball back to
Jacksonville with 1:58 left in the half. Five plays
later, JU kicker Brandon Behr belted a 50-yard
field goal through the uprights to give Jacksonville
a lead it would not surrender.
Drake received the ball to start the third quarter
and a 42-yard completion to Saubert quickly put
the Bulldogs in Jacksonville territory before the
Dolphins’ Jaree Crenshaw picked off a pass at
the Dolphin 39-yard line and returned it 16 yards.
Two plays later JU quarterback Kade Bell found
D’Andre Randle for a 43-yard touchdown. The
PAT attempt was no good.
The Bulldogs’ next possession again saw a
Saubert reception move the ball into JU territory
before the Dolphins picked off Rice with Armani
Sampson doing the honors this time to end a
promising Drake drive. The Bulldogs moved the
ball 68 yards on their next drive prior to Grady
Redding’s interception that squashed it on the
Dolphins’ 23-yard line. Just before the close of
the third quarter Drake marched down to the JU
8-yard line but were again stopped by a turnover,
this time a fumble that was recovered on the JU

10-yard line.
Jacksonville capitalized on that turnover by
marching 90 yards in five plays with Bell scrambling into the endzone from 13-yards out to make
the score 22-7 with Acree blocking the PAT attempt.
Undeterred, Drake fought back and pulled
within a score with 8:52 left in the game as Wilkins
darted five yards and stretched to break the plane
to trim JU’s lead to 22-14 after a 4-play, 67-yard
drive.
However, two drives later, Jacksonville
delivered a dagger with Bryant turning a thirdand-inches situation into a 59-yard touchdown
scramble to account for the final 29-14 tally.
