Police to investigate ‘beating’ video Syria conflict destabilises Turkey Booker prize for fiction
Hong Kong protests
HONG KONG, Oct 15
The Hong Kong police
department is investigating
reports that officers used
excessive force against prodemocracy protesters.
Local TV showed images
of officers beating a handcuffed
protester
on
Wednesday in some of the
worst clashes since the protests began.
Hong Kong’s security
chief said the officers had
been “temporarily removed
from their current duties”.
The incident occurred as
police cleared an underpass
near government buildings.
The police advance came
when protesters blockaded the
underpass after being cleared
out of other areas of the city
on Tuesday.
Overnight police used pepper spray and batons to
remove protesters from Lung
Wo Road which they said
earlier had to be cleared as it
was a major thoroughfare.
They also arrested 45 people
for “unlawful assembly”.
Local TV network TVB
aired footage showing a
group of plainclothes policeman dragging a handcuffed
and unarmed protester and
placing him on the ground.
They then assault him,
kicking and beating him for
minutes.
The man was named as
Ken Tsang, a social worker
and member of the opposition
Civic Party. He was later
taken to hospital.
Secretary for Security Lai
Tung-kwok said there was
“concern” over a video clip
“showing police officers who
used inappropriate force
against an arrested person”.
He said the officers seen
on the video would be removed from their current
duties and an investigation
would be carried out.
The protesters are now in
their third week of occupying
key parts of the city in a bid
to put pressure on China and
Hong Kong’s authorities to
answer their calls for political
reform.
Thousands of people took
to the streets at the beginning
of the demonstrations but the
numbers have dwindled in
recent days.
They are demanding fully
free elections in the next vote
for the territory’s leader.
China, which has control over
Hong Kong, says residents
can vote - but it will vet
which candidates are eligible
to stand.
The clashes came on the
third day of operations that
police say are necessary to
ease traffic disruption, but
which they insist are not
aimed at clearing the protesters.
Tsui Wai-Hung, a police
spokesman, said none of the
37 men and eight women who
were arrested had been hurt.
Four police officers were said
to have been injured.
Occupy Central and the
Hong Kong Federation of
Students, the two main groups
behind the protests, have condemned the violence and
asked authorities to investigate.
Joshua Wong, a prominent
student leader, told AFP
news agency that trust between police and the activists
was at a low point.
“The proper action police
should take is to bring the
protester to the police car, not
to take him away and then
punch and kick him for four
minutes,” he said.
On Wednesday, China’s
People’s Daily, the Communist
Party’s
official
newspaper, said the protests
were “doomed to fail” in a
front-page editorial.
China most senior official
in Hong Kong, Zhang
Xiaoming, told lawmakers in
the city that the protest movement “is a serious and
political incident that has violated the ‘one country’
principle, challenged the central authority”, and was
“illegal activity that openly
violates Hong Kong’s current
law”.
He asked for an end to the
protests.
Ebola: Second Texas health worker ‘tests
positive’, Zuckerberg donates $25 mn
WASHINGTON, Oct 15
A second health worker in the
US state of Texas has tested
positive for Ebola, health
officials say.
A 26-year-old female
nurse is already receiving
treatment after becoming infected by a Liberian man who
died from the deadly virus last
week.
US officials say they are
monitoring 48 contacts of the
Liberian national and the
healthcare workers who
treated him.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says 4,447
people have died from the
outbreak, mainly in West
Africa.
Nina Pham was exposed
to Ebola at a Dallas hospital
when she treated Liberian
Thomas Duncan, the first
person diagnosed with the
virus on US soil.
Doctors at the Health Presbyterian hospital said she was
in good condition on Tuesday.
The identity of the second
health worker has not yet been
revealed, however, the person
also cared for Mr Duncan
while he was in hospital.
The health worker was
immediately isolated after reporting a fever on Tuesday,
the Texas state department for
health said in a statement.
“Health officials have interviewed the latest patient to
quickly identify any contacts
or potential exposures, and
those people will be monitored,” the department said.
Meanwhile,
Facebook
founder Mark Zuckerberg
announced on the social networking site that he and his
wife, Priscilla, have donated
$25 million to the US Centres
for Disease Control and Prevention for the fight against
the Ebola virus disease.
“We need to get Ebola
under control in the near term
so that it doesn’t spread further and become a long term
global health crisis that we
end up fighting for decades at
large scale, like HIV or polio,” he said in a Facebook
post on Tuesday.
“We believe our grant is
the quickest way to empower
the CDC and the experts in
this field to prevent this outcome,” Mr. Zuckerberg
added.
The founder of the popular
social networking site believes that making a donation
of this kind is the “quickest
way to empower the CDC
and the experts in this field to
prevent this outcome”.
Since the Ebola epidemic
broke out last March, more
than 4,000 people, most of
them in West Africa, have
died from the disease, according to the World Health
Organisation.
Zuckerberg said that Ebola
so far has infected more than
8,400 people and is spreading
rapidly with projections being
that one million people or
more will become infected in
Malaysia arrests 13 people
suspected of Islamic State links
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15: Malaysian authorities said on
Wednesday they had arrested 13 Malaysians suspected of having
links to Islamic State and who were planning to leave for Syria.
Police on Monday raided a restaurant in Shah Alam, a suburb 30
minutes from the capital of Kuala Lumpur, after authorities discovered the group, which included women, was making plans to
leave Malaysia.
Malaysia has arrested a total of 36 citizens suspected of
militancy since April this year and authorities believe that at
least 30 are already in Syria and Iraq, fighting for different
groups tied to the Islamic State. In June, the foreign ministry
said in a statement that 15 Malaysians were allegedly killed in
Syria while participating in activities linked to the Islamic
State.
Malaysian militants have used Facebook and other social
media sites to lure recruits, attracting thousands of followers
online. Recruits now include young women and families, with
local news reporting that a family of four had travelled to
Syria, while a Malaysian female doctor’s posts on Facebook
on her life as militant’s wife in Syria has attracted wide
attention.
SaudiArabia sentences outspoken
Shi’ite cleric to death
RIYADH, Oct 15: A Saudi judge on Wednesday sentenced to
death an outspoken Shi’ite Muslim cleric whose arrest two years
ago prompted deadly protests, the cleric’s brother said on his Twitter account. Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr was detained in July 2012 after
backing mass protests that erupted in February 2011 in the Qatif
district of eastern Saudi Arabia, which is home to many of the
Sunni-ruled country’s Shi’ite minority.
His capture, during which he was shot and wounded by
police, prompted several days of protests in which three people were killed. Protests have continued sporadically in Qatif,
where more than 20 people have died in violence since 2011.

TURKEY/ISTANBUL, Oct
15
American-led forces have
sharply intensified air strikes in
the past two days against
Islamic
State
fighters
threatening Kurds on Syria’s
Turkish border after the
jihadists’ advance began to
destabilise Turkey.
The coalition had conducted 21 attacks on the
militants near the Syrian
Kurdish town of Kobani over
Monday and Tuesday and
appeared to have slowed Islamic State advances there,
the U.S. military said, but
cautioned the situation remained fluid.
U.S. President Barack
Obama voiced deep concern
on Tuesday about the situation in Kobani as well as in
Iraq’s Anbar province, which
U.S. troops fought to secure
during the Iraq war and is
now at risk of being seized
by Islamic State militants.
“Coalition air strikes will
continue in both of these areas,” Obama told military
leaders from coalition partners including Turkey, Arab
states and Western allies during a meeting outside
Washington. (Full Story)
The fight against Islamic
State will be among the items
on the agenda when Obama
holds a video conference on
Wednesday with British,
French, German and Italian
leaders, the White House
said.
War on the militants in
Syria is threatening to unravel a delicate peace in
neighbouring Turkey where
Kurds are furious with Ankara over its refusal to help
protect their kin in Syria.
The plight of the Syrian
Kurds in Kobani provoked
riots among Turkey’s 15 million Kurds last week in which
at least 35 people were killed.
Turkish warplanes were
reported to have attacked
Kurdish rebel targets in
southeast Turkey after the
army said it had been attacked
by the banned PKK Kurdish
militant
group,
risking
reigniting a three-decade conflict that killed 40,000 people
before a cease-fire was declared two years ago.
Kurds inside Kobani said
the U.S.-led strikes on Islamic State had helped, but
that the militants, who have
besieged the town for weeks,
were still on the attack.
“Today there were air
strikes throughout the day,
which is a first. And sometimes we saw one plane
carrying out two strikes,
dropping two bombs at a
time,” said Abdulrahman
Gok, a journalist with a local
Kurdish paper who is inside
the town.
“The strikes are still continuing,” he said by telephone,
as an explosion sounded in
the background.
“In the afternoon, Islamic
State intensified its shelling of
the town,” he said. “The fact
that they’re not conducting
face-to-face, close-distance
fight but instead shelling the
town from afar is evidence
that they have been pushed
back a bit.”
Asya Abdullah, co-chair of
the dominant Kurdish political party in Syria, PYD, said
the latest air strikes had been
“extremely helpful”. “They
are hitting Islamic State targets hard and because of
those strikes we were able to
push back a little. They are
still shelling the city centre.”
It was the largest number
of air strikes on Kobani since
the U.S.-led campaign in
Syria began last month, the
Pentagon said. The White
House said the impact was
constrained by the absence of
forces on the ground but that
evidence so far showed its
strategy was succeeding.
The Turkish Kurds’ anger
and resulting unrest is a new
source of turmoil in a region
consumed by Iraqi and Syr-
ian civil wars and an international campaign against
Islamic State fighters.
The PKK accused Ankara
of violating the cease-fire
with the air strikes, on the
eve of a deadline set by its
jailed leader to salvage the
peace process.
“For the first time in
nearly two years, an air operation was carried out
against our forces by the occupying Turkish Republic
army,” the PKK said. “These
attacks against two guerrilla
bases at Daglica violated the
ceasefire,” the PKK said, referring to an area near the
border with Iraq.
Obama, who ordered the
bombing campaign that
started in August against Islamic State fighters, told the
meeting of military leaders
from 22 countries to expect a
“long-term effort” in the battle against Islamic State
militants.
“There will be days of
progress and there are going
to be some periods” of setbacks, he said.
A U.S. military official
told Reuters after the talks
there was an acknowledgement that Islamic State was
making some gains on the
ground, despite the air strikes.
But there was also a sense
that the coalition, working
together, would ultimately
prevail, the official said.
“In the short term, there
are some gains that they have
been able to make. In the long
term, that momentum will be
reversed,” the official said,
adding the coalition would
adjust its tactics as Islamic
State fighters increasingly
blend into the population and
become harder to target.
The peace process with the
Kurds is one of the main initiatives of President Tayyip
Erdogan’s decade in power,
during which Turkey has enjoyed an economic boom
underpinned by investor confidence in future stability.

LONDON, Oct 15
An Indian lost out on winning
the Man Booker prize second
time in as many years as
Australian author Richard
Flanagan took away the literary
world’s most coveted prize for
his book ‘The Narrow Road to
the Deep North’.
Flanagan’s book is the
story of his father as a prisoner during war in a Japanese
prison and was called a literary masterpiece by the jury.
A Tasmanian-born author, he
is the third Australian to win
the coveted prize which, for
the first time in its 46-year
history, is now expanded to
include entries from writers
of all nationalities, writing
originally in English and published in the UK.
He joins an impressive literary canon of former
winners including fellow
Australians
Thomas
Kenneally (Schindler’s Ark,
1982) and Peter Carey (Oscar
& Lucinda, 1988 and The
True History of the Kelly
Gang, 2001).
‘The Narrow Road to the
Deep North’ is the sixth
novel from Flanagan which
centres upon the experiences
of surgeon Dorrigo Evans in
a Japanese POW camp on the
now infamous ThailandBurma railway.
Named after a famous
Japanese book by the haiku
poet Basho, The Narrow
Road to the Deep North was
described by the 2014 judges
as ‘a harrowing account of
the cost of war to all who are
caught up in it’. Questioning
the meaning of heroism, the
book explores what motivates
acts of extreme cruelty and
shows that perpetrators may
be as much victims as those
they abuse.
The book is the real story
of Flanagan’s father as a prisoner of war. He was a
survivor of the Burma Death
Railway. The author took 12
years to write it. Ironically,
Flanagan’s father died the day
he finished the book
Flanagan was announced
as the 2014 winner by AC
Grayling, chair of judges, at
an awards dinner at London’s
Guildhall.
