So time to get your grooming products out & get your bike looking its best for the show. At the same time why not go through that pile of old parts & accessories to sort out what you have to sell & swap. The committee have been hard at work putting this event together & with the support of The Rock 93 Waikato in conjunction with Classics Museum its looking to be a great event. Apart from club members bringing display bikes we want 10 or so volunteers to help on the day with manning the gates etc. If anyone can help come and see me at club night. Talking of volunteers, Barry is organising a gully working bee so some green fingered volunteers would be appreciated. The committee has decided to build a shelter by the main entrance, this will offer weather protection for smokers and make bbq’s a little easier in wet weather. Again I’ll be seeking a few volunteers on club night. September’s been another busy month for the club, despite being the end of winter club night was again well attended and enjoyed. The 2014 Arai WRRS prize giving was held on the 13th, big thanks to Mark for preparing a sumptuous spread which was appreciated by all. Most trophy winners were there & the whole event went really well. AMCC members helped a lot with marshalling over the series so it will be good to reciprocate with their series. AMCC round 1 clashes with the show & swap meet but if you can help out round 2 on 16 November & round 3 on 30 November that would be great. This is an event that is open to anyone that rides a motorbike and is to raise money to help children with Special Needs. Hamilton North School is a Special School, which caters entirely for students with Special Needs. The students are aged from 5 – 21 years. All have an intellectual disability and some with various complex disabilities. They often live in foster homes or in residential homes for the disabled. They are a very disadvantaged group of young people. The various planned educational opportunities the school offers would most definitely not be available to these youngsters without the help of community support through such fundraising events. You support will be greatly appreciated. Regards Michael van Alphen <[email protected]> For more information contact me via this email or on 078506419 ‑12- ‑13- The Cold Kiwi Files Another interesting route was planned but not followed due to certain events and the weather. But that’s the best way – make it up as you go along. Four of us left Te Awamutu on Friday. Steve – Transalp, Stu – Hypermotard, Horse – Bandit and me – BMW. My Ducati has run another big-end, it’s an Italian bitch but I still love it. I have found the radiator cap is releasing at 1.5 Bar instead of the rated 1.1 possibly causing pressure past the water pump seal damaging two engines. So the BMW came out of retirement again, I forgot how Marvelous it is. We had a late start because of Honda trouble (in fairness it was the battery not the Honda). Awesome backroads east of Te Kuiti, Waimiha etc and Horse left us in Taumarunui. We doubled back a bit. Check out the Okahukura Saddle, it left an impression on Stu. At Ohura to pick up Bruce – Harley “Breakout”, the weather wasn’t good and it was getting late so spent the night there. Next day slippery roads, you know what it’s like when it rains after a dry spell. Still fun. In Taumarunui Stu’s bike would fire but not start. After bypassing the sidestand switch, pushing it to a bike shop, changing plugs etc, it dawned that the man who never makes mistakes had 50 % diesel in the tank. Over the Punga road to Turangi and the delay meant we could join up with an old acquaintance Ken on his Triumph having just finished work in Whakapapa village. The general opinion of the new Kiwi site behind Horopito wreckers was thumbs up. There is a flat plateau with the food, band and fire and limited camping. There are valleys running uphill with sheltered bowls. Higher up there is more room but it is windy and, as some sport bike riders found, the tracks back down were slippery after overnight rain. We were camped near Dennis and his Guzzi. Jason and co were there somewhere but we didn’t find them. We caught up with some club members at the Taupo Classic/ Post Classic meeting on the way home on Sunday and continued the back roads through Waikite Valley and Old Taupo road. Good riding, good mates, great escape. Steve W The not so cold Cold Kiwi camp site 2014 New venue, new & old bikes, new & old faces. The bikes look good ... ‑14- ‑15- Errol McCabe Memorial Trial RD 2 (Final) 7th September The second and final round of the inaugural Errol McCabe Memorial Trial was held at Glen Cooper’s property on the northern slopes of Maungtautari. This two round series was conceived, produced and directed by Neil McCabe and he and brother Keith put up a really nice weighty little silver cup for the highest placed classic machine. Tony P and Neil spent two days getting things just right, all the way down to the weatherperson. Sunday morning we had sunshine, a bunch of fizzing riders, a range of machines from Neils BSA Bantam to Peter O’s new Electric and 10 sparkling new sections to ride. Although the trophy was rightly contested by the classic machines only, Neil’s concept for the series was to make it open to any machine to attract as many riders as possible. And it worked again. 25 entries is a good turnout for a club trial with a couple of Orclanders, five Taurangians and 18 locals making up the field. So we get down to it. The venue is a big valley with a rocky stream twisting its way down in and out of stands of mature bush. Plenty of good options for 10 sections. Section one dropped us into the stream where we worked our way down stream in various torturous ways depending on what colour flag you were trying to get round/ avoid. We then came out of the stream(hopefully) and turned through a network of tree roots to the exit. One down. The next four sections worked their way up stream using the forest floor more than the stream to find logs, tree roots and banks to test the contenders. We then came out into the open sunshine where the focus was entirely on the meandering stream for the next two sections. It is quite narrow at this point and presents some good gnarly rocks for an extra challenge. Neil added a couple of steep exits for the more adrenaline driven and allowed access to the stream edges for us more sneaky types. The three remaining sections at the top of the course used the stream and the surrounding bush to present, arguably the toughest sections. The stream is wider and presents more options and the banks had lots of tree roots to dispatch riders at. Lap one down. Time for ‑16- a bite to eat and the odd adjustment to the bike, depending on how arduous the first lap was and a bit of yar yar yar to whoever else has pitted. I should mention, because trials is a very stop start sport, on the first lap at least, it’s also quite social. Lots of opportunity to yak about bikes, the sections, upcoming events, elections (can’t say I heard any of that). In the normal course of events that first lap takes about as much time to complete as the remaining three so it’s very much a two part day in my view. Lap two might involve a quick look before plunging in but laps three and four are a bit closer akin to enduro. I bit more fanging and a bike behaves differently because it’s hotter and feeling a bit more harassed. So’s the rider. It’s easy to ride straight into a section and discover half way through that a wee rest at the start would have been a good idea. Big log ... no energy .. 5. So we make it too the end and we’re all finished in good time. There’s a good rally to the flag pulling task while Tony P, who has donated his day to entering results as they come in instead of riding, does a tally up. And the winner of the inaugural Errol McCabe Memorial Trials series for the first classic machine is ...................... ........ ................ Neil McCabe on the BSA Bantam owned and ridden by Errol in the old days and owned and ridden regularly by Neil now. ...... and he was within a point of taking the overall win in Clubmans against a bunch of much newer machines. Well done that man and thanks for a great day. Note: Neil immediately announced that the trophy would be opened up to aircooled, drum braked machines next year. I heard people sussing what bikes they would use for that already. Ye he bring it on!
