THE FALL RETREAT: will be held at Camp
Allegheny in Ellwood City from Friday evening,
November 21, to Sunday afternoon, November 23.
It is for high school aged teens and it is a time for
prayer, learning, making new friends and, most
importantly, having time to nourish your relationship
with the Lord. Scholarships are available. There is an
opportunity to participate in this great event for under
$50. Usually all available space is taken before the end
of October. So don't delay! Parents, consider giving
your teen a chance at a remarkable faith experience.

STORY TIME: On Thur sday, October 30, fr om
7:00-8:00 PM in Keane Hall (School Cafeteria) East
Catholic School will host the “Perfect for Preschoolers”
“A Very Special” Halloween Story Time. All children
from 2-1/2 years old through Kindergarten are invited to
dress-up in their Halloween costume and come to Story
Time featuring Not-So-Scary-Stories, a silly craft and a
spooky snack. We invite all children along with their
parent or guardian to come. Registration is required by

EVERYTHING BELONGS TO GOD: The fir st r eading fr om the pr ophet Isaiah concer ns the
Persian King Cyrus, called the Lord’s “anointed.” Cyrus deserves this title because he ended the
Babylonian captivity of the Jews. However, Isaiah reminds us that it was God who gave Cyrus his
power. He may be a great king, but “I am the LORD and there is no other,” says God (Isaiah 45:5).
Today’s Gospel is also concerned with worldly power. In the passage from Matthew, the
Pharisees try to trick Jesus into speaking against the emperor. His famous answer is the perfect reply.
Like the kings of old, Caesar can be given the respect due his position, but everything belongs to God.
In the second reading, Paul gives thanks for all who are faithful to Jesus Christ and his gospel. He, too, reminds us
that our call and the power to be faithful come from God.
RESPECT LIFE MONTH: The month of October features different commemorations of a spiritual
and human character, including the month of the Holy Rosary, Breast Cancer Awareness, and also
Respect Life Month. This year’s theme is “Each of Us Is a Masterpiece of God’s Creation.” Pope
Francis’ Day for Life Greeting is “Even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor,
are masterpieces of God’s creation, made in His own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost

ALL SAINTS DAY/ALL SOULS DAY: Satur day, November 1, is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation this year .
Sunday, November 2, is All Souls Day and we will have our annual All Souls Mass on Monday, November 3, at

ADULT EDUCATION AND FAMILY FORMATION: Untold Blessing mini retreat: You can still come to the

MINISTRY FAIR: scheduled for this weekend is being rescheduled!
CALLING ALL PIE BAKERS AND CHILI COOKS! On Satur day, November 1, St. Maur ice will host the
second annual Fall Family Festival! Two fun activities of the day will be a Pie Contest and a Chili Contest. We
encourage all of you wonderful Parish pie bakers to pull out your favorite recipes and submit an entry to our Pie
Contest. There will be three categories for pie submissions: Fruit, Cream, and Other. Your entry must fit into one of
these categories, be nut-free, and placed in a disposable pie plate. The Pie Contest will be judged by Father John,
Deacon Tucek, and Basil Zitelli. This year we are also inviting all Parish Chili cooks to submit your favorite
homemade pot of Chili to be judged by adult event attendees. Your entry must be submitted in a crock-pot or other
safe food-warmer. Additional details on both contests will be provided in this week’s bulletin insert.

This Sunday at the 10:00 AM Mass, 36 sixth graders from our Parish will participate in their Rite of
Welcoming. This is the first step to receiving their Confirmation in eighth grade. As a part of this Rite,
they will be blessed by Father John and their parents and receive a blessed Bible that they will use over
the next several years as they prepare to be Confirmed. Please keep these young people in your
continued prayers.
Would you like to participate in Mass in a very special way? If so, we’d like students (in 4th grade
through high school) to become Altar Servers for St. Maurice Parish. We are looking for kind, dependable,
enthusiastic servers to join this special ministry. Once trained, servers will be scheduled about once a month
according to their Mass preferences. New Server Training will take place on Tuesday, October 28, at
7:00 PM in the Church. We encour age one par ent to also attend this tr aining with their childr en. Feel fr ee to

BIBLE STUDY: A new session will start on Thursday, November 6, at 7:00 PM in the Parish Center
and will use Ignatius Catholic Study Bible on “Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon” published by
Ignatius Press. The cost of the study guide is $11 and payable at the first session; but in order to have the
guide available, you must register by October 22 by calling 412-351-6008.
HOLY LAND ARTICLES: Next weekend, October 25 & 26, our br other s and sister s
representing the Christian Catholic Families of Bethlehem will be selling crucifixes,
religious art work and rosaries, all made of olive wood which is native to Israel and
Bethlehem. Since tourism has greatly depleted, Christian families in the Holy Land, who
depend on tourists, have been greatly affected. Sale of these goods will help them very
much and also give you the opportunity to have “something” authentic from the Holy Land. Please browse and buy

FOCUS GROUP OF THE WEEK: CHRISTIAN FAMILY MOVEMENT (CFM): is a national
organization that helps form Christian individuals and families, but the heart of CFM is the small group
(sometimes called small faith communities in parishes) that meets in church facilities or homes. Our
group of six families meets on the third Sunday of the month in the Parish Center at 5:00 PM. At our meetings we
use program material from the national movement and the CFM methodology of Observe, Judge and Act. The
adults gather to observe issues of everyday life, which sometimes involve our children too, to judge it against the
vision of Christ, and to act upon this understanding of Christ’s vision. Families discover how they can act to make
a positive difference for Christ. We do small actions within the family and larger actions within the group, such as
the Mr. Rogers Sweater Drive or a Diaper/Socks/Underwear Drive which we have done here at St. Maurice in the
past. This helps us grow in understanding of what it means to be Christ in the world. CFM builds community.
There is always food after meetings - sometimes just refreshments, other times pot luck, but always a good time.
Our children love to come to meetings and have made some good friends. If you are interested in doing something
for your family, try this. CFM groups are open to all families, two-parent or single-parent, and parents of different
faiths; so don’t hesitate if you are not Catholic. We would love to welcome you to our small group or, if enough
people are interested, we could start another group. Give CFM a try; join us for a meeting. For more information
