One of the things that gives Loikka its special charm is the communal atmosphere that comes from close interaction and dialogue between the audience and the filmmakers. The event brings together filmmakers and festival organisers from around the world to enjoy the intimate festival setting. I
encourage all festival-goers to interact with the people who brought us the
films, whether during talks or in between screenings.

This past winter has seen some heated and passionate behind-the-scenes
debate about how to define and assess dance film as a form of art. The best
way to put this particular art form and dance into words was discussed
at jury meetings, a workshop on dance film screenwriting, and among the
partners co-producing the 60secondsdance competition.

This year’s programme focuses on films with strong dramaturgy – films that
are compelling and manage to combine choreography with cinematic expression in a way that is fascinating. The selection process involved group
work, individual judgement, and collaboration with a wide network of partner festivals.

The members of the Open Call 1 & 2 jury had the pleasure of sorting through
open call entries to choose films for two screenings. Open Call 3 selections
were up to myself and Loikka’s 3D specialist Thomas Freundlich. A big thank

The key to putting together a great programme is to collaborate with other

Suomalaisen tanssielokuvan promoottorina olemme edistäneet tanssielokuvan ja -tekijän asemaa. Sesin ja Ylen kanssa aloitettu yhteistyö tanssielokuvan täsmärahoituksesta on ollut pitkäaikainen unelma. Tänä vuonna 40
000€ tuotantotuen saa yksi n. 5 minuutin mittainen tanssielokuva. Loikan
tähtäimenä on saavuttaa sama mahdollisuus vuosittain useammalle elokuvalle.
Our mission is to promote dance film and the work of dance filmmakers in
Finland. A newly-established collaboration with The Finnish Film Foundation and Finland’s national public service broadcasting company Yle will
provide targeted funding for dance films, fulfilling a long-standing dream of
ours. In 2015, a production subsidy of €40,000 will be given to one dance
film of approximately 5 minutes in length. Loikka’s aim is to make this type
of funding available to more films on an annual basis.

Loikan yksi ihastuttavimmista erityispiirteistä on yleisön ja tekijöiden vuoropuhelusta ja kohtaamisesta syntynyt yhteisöllinen ilmapiiri. Sopivan intiimi tapahtuma kerää yhteen elokuvantekijöitä ja festivaaliorganisaattoreita
ympäri maailmaa. Rohkaisen katsojiamme vuoropuheluun tekijöiden kanssa
niin yleisökeskustelutilanteissa kuin elokuvanäytösten väliajoilla.
Festivaalin kulisseissa on käyty kuluvana talvena kiivaita ja intohimoisia
keskusteluja taidelajin määritelmistä ja arvioimisesta. Sopivia sanoja juuri
tälle taidemuodolle ja tanssille on etsitty jurytapaamisissa, 60secondsdance-kilpailun kumppaneiden kanssa ja tanssielokuvan käsikirjoitustyöpajassa.
Tänä vuonna yksi teemoistamme onkin miten puhua tanssielokuvasta: miten määritellä sitä, mitä se on, miten kuvata lajia esim. journalismissa? Asiaa
pohtii myös Aleksis Salusjärvi artikkelissaan sivulla 34.
Ilman upeita elokuvia, taiteilijoita ja yhteistyökumppaneita tämä kaikki ei
olisi ollut mahdollista. Tanssielokuva on moninainen, kiehtova, määrittelemätön, elävä ja koukuttava taidemuoto.
Lopuksi haluan kiittää osaavaa ja intohimolla työhönsä paneutuvaa Loikka Teamiä ja ennen kaikkea toivottaa uudet ja vanhat katsojat tervetulleiksi
kahdeksansille Loikka-festareille.

Loikka 2015 festivaalin ohjelmistovalinnoissa yhtenä tärkeimpänä
kriteerinä on ollut elokuvan dramaturginen toimivuus. Kysymykset
siitä koukuttaako elokuva, jättääkö se muistijälkiä, koskettaako se
ja välittyykö viesti katsojalle, ovat olleet ohjenuorina näytösten kuratoimisessa.
Suomalaisen Juha Karikosken pitkään arkistojen kätköissä ollut Antti kertoo
tarinan nuorenmiehen roolista vartijana, jengiin kuulumisesta ja tietenkin
rakkaudesta. Kanadalaisen Thibaut Duverneixin Gravity of Center elokuva
puolestaan tarkastelee ryhmään kuulumista ja individualismia abstraktin
tanssin voimalla. Supernopeuskameralla kuvattu tanssi näyttäytyy groteskina paljastaen eläimellisen liikkeen kauneuden. Elokuvakameran suoman
erityispiirteen vuoksi myös suomalaisen kuvataiteilijan Jenni Hiltusen ja
ohjaaja Miikka Lommin seksuaalisuutta pursuava Grind hypnotisoi katsojan. Elokuva räväyttää näkyville Dancehall queen -tanssityylin koko komeudessaan pyllistäen musiikkivideoiden tanssikuville. Barcelonalaisen
Choreoscope-tanssielokuvafestivaalin yhteistyönä näytöksessä nähdään
elokuvakerronnallisesti vahvoja espanjalaisia tanssielokuvia. Tunnetta tihkuvat Dance with me ja Lysergic worlds kuvaavat molemmat koskettavasti
mielen hajoamista ja toisen pyrkimystä ymmärtää tätä.
Espanjalaisten Alendan veljesten Inertial Love elokuva väläyttää kekseliäästi
parisuhteen repeämisen hetkeä. Fyysisen ilmaisun voima on hyvin mukana
tässäkin tanssielokuvassa.
In putting together the Loikka 2015 festival programme, one of the
key criteria for selection was dramatic composition. Does the film
hook the viewer in? Does it leave an imprint on the viewer’s mind?
Does it have the ability to touch the audience? Does it get its message across? These were some of the questions considered by the
festival curators.
Long hidden in archives, the film Antti by Finnish filmmaker Juha Karikoski
is a story of a young man and his life as a guard and a gang member. It is also
a story of love. Meanwhile, the Canadian film Gravity of Center by Thibaut
Duverneix looks at the dichotomy between collectivism and individualism
through abstract dance. The use of a high-speed camera makes the dancing
appear grotesque, at the same time revealing the beauty that lies in animalistic movement. Special in-camera effects are also used with hypnotic results in the blatantly sexual Grind, a film by Finnish visual artist Jenni Hiltunen and director Miikka Lommi. Their piece comes at the audience with the
Dancehall Queen style in full effect, buttock-flashing the dance aesthetic of
music videos. The screening also features a number of Spanish dance films
with a strong narrative, curated in collaboration with Choreoscope, the International Dance Film Festival of Barcelona. Highly charged with emotion,
Dance with me and Lysergic worlds are two films that give heartfelt portrayals of people undergoing mental breakdown, and other people’s attempts
to understand what they are going through.

The films of this screening display a vibrant and diverse art form
of dance film, with varying styles from narrative films to more experimental ones.
Samba piirtää tavanomaisuudesta poikkeavan muotokuvan liikkuvasta ihmiskehosta kaikessa loistossaan, kuvan, jonka voi vangita vain elokuvan
keinoin. Sydämenlyönnit, yksinkertainen liike ja havainnoiva kamera luovat
Chestiin vahvan ja lähes hypnoottisen tunnelman.
Samba exposes moving human flesh in all its glory and portrays an unusual
picture of samba in a way that can only be captured on film. With the simplicity of movement and an observing camera, Chest manages to create a
strong, almost hypnotic feel around a simple idea of a beating heart.
Magma vie yleisönsä rituaalinomaiselle, mustavalkoiselle kokeellisen tanssielokuvan matkalle ja Danced off the Ground tuo puolestaan näytökseen
raikkaan tuulahduksen tanssin iloa.
While Danced off the Ground is like a breath of fresh air celebrating the joy
of dance, Magma takes the audience to a ritualistic, black and white journey
of experimental dance film.
Peripheral Vision leikittelee luonnon elementeillä, kun taas Gone synnyttää
koreografiansa tavallisista arjen hetkistä. Molemmissa elokuvissa kuvauspaikat toimivat estetiikan ja äänimaailman lähtökohtina.
Peripheral Vision plays with the elements of nature but Gone creates its choreography from ordinary and everyday movements. Both films draw their
aesthetics and soundscapes from the film locations.
Viihdyttävässä ja tuoreessa Welcome Home -elokuvassa kekseliäs koreografia palvelee hienosti tarinankerrontaa. Sen saumaton kamera- ja editointityö
tekee elokuvan katsomista riemastuttavan kokemuksen.
Welcome Home is a fresh and upbeat dance film. Inventive choreography
serves the storyline nicely. Explicit editing and work camera play together
well and make this film enjoyable to watch.
Näytös tarjoaa maistiaisia siitä, mitä kaikkea tanssielokuva voi olla. Se sopii
hyvin myös uusille tanssielokuvan katsojille.
The screening gives, if not a complete overview, a good glimpse of the
dance film genre. It works well as an introduction for new audiences.

kohtaukseen, johon on poimittu tunnelmia Peter Weirin kulttielokuvasta
Huviretki hirttopaikalle. Fallissa koreografioiden asettelu lokaatioihin lainaa
Wendersin Pina- sekä Opus Jazz -elokuvien loistavia kaupunkikuvia. Kuubalaisten nuorten tanssijoiden vangitsevan vakava esiintyminen imaisee
katsojan mukaansa. Vanishing Point ja End of the Block -teoksissa tarinaa

OPEN CALL I
These eight films play with film references and the cinematic form.
They place form and movement equally in the viewpoint and parade the multiple posibilities of cinematic form in dancefilm. Shot
in one take, in Six the choreographed camera floats as one the
performers and in Pelican dance cinematic historical references
are cleary in forefront.
In Sing the Sand into Pearls the movement journey of three women takes
us to the beach, where the atmosphere resembles Peter Weir’s cult film
Picnic at Hanging Rock. Fall places the choreography in a location similar to
Pina and Opus Jazz, and the captivating seriousness of the young dances
engages the audience. Street dance and cinematic form carry the story in
Vanishing Point ja End of the Block. Finnish Narri relies in the captivity of
repetition. Outside In plays geniously with layered imaginatory space only
possible in film still relying on the captivating performer.

understanding is through talking about what is true. The fastest is
through dance. When looking at two people dance together, we
are looking at the understanding between them.

mies ja nainen jakavat asunnon ja elämänsä. Kehoon liittyvät tunnetilat eivät ole verbaalisia, ennemmin ne kytkevät ruumiin ja tietoisuuden toisiinsa,
todellisuuteen. Kun se tapahtuu kahden ihmisen kesken, siitä tulee heidän
totuutensa.
This is captured in a plain and beautiful way in he&she, a Norwegian film of a
man and a woman sharing a flat and their lives together. The emotions in the
body are not expressed verbally, but rather they are something that connect
the body and the consciousness to one another – and to reality. When two
people share this experience, it becomes their truth.

Rajala-Granstubbin muotokuvassa Abraham Lezama Juarez löytää identiteettinsä tanssista. Elinympäristö muuttuu rakkauden myötä, mutta todellisuus saa samastumispisteensä tanssin kautta.
A cinematic examination of the same topic – mutual understanding between
people – is Objects in mirror are closer than they appear, a film that brings
together Mexican flamenco and the Finnish countryside. Directed by Jukka
Rajala-Granstubb, it portrays Abraham Lezama Juarez and his journey to
find his own identity through dance. Love takes him to new surroundings,
but dance provides a common touchpoint through which to relate to reality.

There is something astonishingly bare in the way dance can convey human

The 3D dance short films in this screening all tackle the eternal
question of capturing the moving human body in physical and cinematic space.
Näytöksessä esitetään ensimmäinen kotimainen tanssin 3D-filmatisointi The
Raven, joka on taltioitu elokuvalliseen muotoon Kaari Martinin palkitusta
nykyflamencoteoksesta Korppi ja Kello. Frames levittää tanssijoiden liikkeen
3D-kuvatilaan myös ajallisesti.
The first Finnish 3D dance film The Raven captures Kaari Martin’s award-winning contemporary flamenco work. Frames extends the dancers’ movement
also across time.
Sarjan 4K-elokuvat hyödyntävät uusinta digitaalista elokuvatekniikkaa visuaalisen ja emotionaalisen tekstuurin syventämiseen. Intrinsic Moral Evil
käsittelee hienovireisesti identiteetin ja syrjinnän tematiikkaa. Kokeellinen
Butoh Daemon löytää tanssin liikkumattomastakin kuvasta. Kimmo Pohjosen musiikkiin luotu Subsurface luotaa ihmissuhteen tasoja myyttisten luonnonelementtien kautta.
Tanssielokuvantekijä Thomas Freundlich ja stereografi Jarmo Honkala avaavat keskustelua 3D:n mahdollisuuksista tanssille sekä kertovat käytännön kokemuksista stereoskooppisen 3D-tanssielokuvan kuvaamisessa.

4K digital cinema technology can bring added focus to the visual and emotional texture of dance films. Intrinsic Moral Evil is a finely shaped exploration of identity and discrimination. The experimental Butoh Daemon discovers dance in still images, while Subsurface, to music by Kimmo Pohjonen,
uses mythical elements of nature as metaphors for the different levels of a
relationship.
After the screening, dance filmmaker Thomas Freundlich and stereographer
Jarmo Honkala lead a discussion on the possibilities of 3D and dance, and
recount some of the practical experiences of producing a stereoscopic 3D
dance film.

The closing session of the festival will present quality Dutch dance
films entered for the Point Taken project and pay tribute to film
makers. The winners of the 60secondsdance competition and the

Hollannin tanssielokuva sai viisi vuotta sitten merkittävän Point Taken -tuotantohankkeen, jonka kautta tuotetaan vuosittain useita taiteellisesti korkeatasoisia teoksia. Vuodesta 2010 Point Taken -hanke on tuottanut yli 20
elokuvaa, nostaen tanssielokuvan tunnettuutta, arvostusta ja elokuvallista
tasoa huomattavasti. Loikan yhteistyöfestivaalin Cinedansen kautta saamme nähtäväksemme läpileikkauksen projektin elokuvia. Yhteisenä nimittäjänä on sulavasti toimiva elokuvakerronnan ja tanssin liitto.
The Dutch Point Taken project is designed to produce a number of dance
films of a high artistic quality each year. It has so far yielded over 20 films,
thereby making the dance film better known and raising its prestige and
cinematic standard.

Built around the theme of escape, Hyperscape is a gripping film that makes
use of martial arts, breakdance and free running in its language of movement. In A Man Without a Cause, the abstract movement of Emio Crego
and Pieter C. Scholte meets the detailed psychological narrative of director
Arno Dierick. The film is beautiful in the way it captures motion. In her film
One False Move, Clara van Gool – a director who has enjoyed a successful
career in dance film since the 1980s – tells a tragicomic story of a flight attendant who misses her flight. Despite the similar names, Mirroring and The
Mirror are two films that use very different ways to express strong emotion
on screen.
Hyperscape
Katsojan mukaansa tempaava pako-elokuva Hyperscape hyödyntää kamppailulajeja, breakdancea ja free runningia liikekielessään. A Man Without a
Causessa Emio Cregon ja Pieter C. Scholten abstrakti liike yhdistyy ohjaaja
Arno Dierickin tarkkaan psykologisen kerrontaan. Elokuva sisältää upeaa
liikkeen kuvaamista. Hienon uran 1980-luvun lopulta saakka tanssielokuvan
parissa tehneen ohjaajan Clara van Goolin One False Move on tragikoominen kertomus lennoltaan myöhästyvästä lentoemännästä. Teokset Mirroring
ja The Mirror luovat vahvoja tunnetiloja valkokankaalle hyvin erilaisin keinoin
samankaltaisesta nimestään huolimatta.

Tanssija ja koreografi Dave St-Pierre on Kanadassa kriitikoiden ja yleisön
ylistämä taiteilija. Hänen kumoukselliset ja innovatiiviset teoksensa ovat saaneet myös myrskyisän suosion Euroopassa. Ura on huipussaan, mutta hänen
oma kehonsa on pettänyt hänet.
34-vuotiaalla Davella on kystinen fibrioosi. Keskimääräinen eliniänodote sairastuneille on 37 vuotta. Hänen lääkärinsä ovat antaneet hänelle kaksi vuotta elinaikaa, ellei hän saa keuhkosiirrännäistä. Hänen paras ystävänsä, ohjaaja-näyttelijä Brigitte Poupart, aloittaa yhteisen odotusajan Daven kanssa
kuvaten ajan lipumista ja odottamista: Koska puhelin soi? Tuleeko apua?
Koskettava teos on kaunis kertomus ystävyydestä ja elämästä. Elokuvan

Dancer and choreographer Dave St-Pierre is adored by critics and audiences alike. His subversive, innovative works have taken Europe by storm. But
his own body is failing him. Dave is 34 and has cystic fibrosis. The average
life expectancy for sufferers is 37. His doctors have given him two years to
live unless he has a lung transplant.
With the sense of urgency growing, his best friend and creative partner,
director and actress Brigitte Poupart, turns her camera on the daily life of a
man who is waiting for a life-or-death call from the doctor. A call that could
come at any moment. United by art and friendship, the two create a space
in which creativity emerges as a vital act.
Beginning of the screening is shown Dans Macabre by Pedro Piers. This
stunningly visual work seems to be built around the idea of a ”last dance”,
with the finishing touch provided by the ethereal singing voice of Maria
Callas.

The two documentaries in the screening explore the power of
dance to bring people together, while also examining the role
and significance of dance in the lives of the documentary-makers
themselves.
Part memoir, part investigation, “…the dancer from the dance” is an innovative documentary that tells a story of lives entwined and lived in dance.
Director Karen Pearlman interviews dozens of contemporary Australian
dancers and choreographers to find out what they mean when they say “I
am a dancer” and who they would be if they stopped dancing.
Another documentary that approaches the significance of dance from an
international angle is the piece by Finnish choreographer Sari Palmgren.
Her documentary shows a day in the lives of seven Asian and European
dancer-choreographers. Shot on location in Greece, Finland, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand and Estonia, it sets individual choices against a wider perspective of the society at large – looking at the similarities and differences
between people from different cultures.

Yksi tanssihistorian merkkiteoksista, ja yksi mailman kuuluisimmasta näyttämöistä.
Chosen Ones, “Valitut”, kuvaa Suomen Kansallisbaletin matkaa keväällä
2013 Moskovan Bolshoi-teatteriin esittämään Kevätuhria. Kansallisbaletin
esitys on rekonstruktio Vaslav Nisjinskyn kuuluisasta ja aikoinaan kohua herättäneestä alkuperäiskoreografiasta vuodelta 1913.
Koreografia on vaikea, aikataulu tiukka – ja venäläisyleisö tunnetusti vaativa.
Dokumentti vie kevyen näköisen tanssin kulissien taakse ja näyttää paineet,
joita tuntevat erityisesti unelmarooliinsa “valitut” kolme soolotanssijaa, Maki
Nagasawa, Mira Ollila ja Auri Ahola. Teos keskittyy heidän valmistautumiseensa sekä pohtii taiteilijoiden suhdetta tanssiin; miltä tuntuu tavoitella
joka päivä täydellisyyttä, jota ei koskaan voi saavuttaa.
Chosen Ones is a documentary film about The Finnish National
Ballet preparing to perform “The Rite of Spring” at the Bolshoi in
Moscow.
The expectations are high, especially on Maki Nagasawa, Mira Ollila and
Auri Ahola who rehearse for the solo piece. The choreography is complex
and the schedule is tight. The whole group is under great pressure, preparing to meet the demanding Russian audience. The film follows the dancers’
visit to the Bolshoi, as they reflect on their own relationship to ballet – an
art form where the strive for perfection is an essential yet unreachable part
of the everyday.

– monille ne edustavat sitä alkuperäistä ja oikeaa tanssielokuvaa.
Loikka kunnioittaa yhteistyössä KAVIn kanssa tanssin kuvaamista kehittänyttä Hollywood-musikaalitähti Gene Kellyä ja hänen legendaarista
elokuvaansa Laulavat sadepisarat. Kellyn tavoitteena oli uudistaa tanssin
esittämistä valkokankaalla ja tehdä katsomiskokemuksesta kineettisempi
liikuttamalla elokuvakameraa. Hänelle oli myös merkityksellistä tanssin yhteys tarinankerrontaan; Kelly teki koreografiaa kameralle. Tuloksena on yksi
lajityypin klassikoista. Keltaiset sadetakit, Debbie Reynoldsin ja Kellyn koskettava romanssi sekä legendaarinen tanssi vesilammikoissa ovat piirtyneet
kollektiiviseen elokuvamuistiimme.
Toisena klassikkona loistaa iki-ihana Maija Poppanen. Disneyn musikaalielokuva perustuu P.L. Traversin kirjoihin, joissa laulava lastenhoitaja lentää

Musicals are the best-known dance movies, and to many they are
the one and only original way of presenting dance in cinematic
form.
Loikka pays homage to Gene Kelly, who famously developed the genre and
the filming of dance on the silver screen. For Kelly, the contact between
dance and storytelling was vital; he produced choreography for the camera.
The legendary Singin’ in the Rain was directed by the genre’s grand old man,
Stanley Donen, and Kelly himself.
The other musical film classic Mary Poppins was produced by Disney and
based on books by P.L. Travers. Poppins (Julie Andrews) is a singing nanny
who arrives by umbrella to take care of the Banks’ children. Poppins uses
her extraordinary powers to turn their life around by teaching the family
to enjoy life. This colorful and happy movie features extraordinary dance
scenes and is an entertaining experience for audiences of all ages.

One minute is a challenging and stimulating measure of time for a dance
film. Sometimes a minute may seem like eternity, yet sometimes it passes
in a flash.
Kilpailussa Loikan, ScreenMoves - DansHaellernen (DK) ja ScreenDance Festivalin (SE) tanssi- ja elokuva-asiantuntijoista koostuva raati valitsee omat
kärkikymmenikkönsä, voittajan sekä kannustinpalkinnon saajan esiraadin
valitsemasta 30 elokuvan kärjestä.
The 60secondsdance film competition is the joint brainchild of the Nordic
Loikka, ScreenMoves – DansHaellerne (DK) and ScreenDance Festival (SE).
A jury made up of dance and film experts from the target countries chooses
its own top ten, winner and incentive prize winner from a shortlist of 30 films
named by a pre-selection committee.

Loikka will give audiences a head start on the festival with a screening of
Nordic dance films, treating viewers to a sneak preview of the upcoming festival programme. The screening will also feature three award-winning films
screened at past festivals.
Tunnin pituisen näytöksen elokuvat tulevat viidestä pohjoismaasta, jotka
ovat jo vuosia tuottaneet iloksemme tanssielokuvaa. Niiden lisäksi myös
Färsaarella tehdään tanssielokuvia. Näytöksen kuriositeetti on Rammatik-ryhmän kokeellinen tanssielokuva MAGMA.
The hour-long screening will include films from five Nordic countries, each
of which has brought us some wonderful dance films over the years. Another Nordic country featured will be the Faroe Islands. Adding curiosity
value to the screening, MAGMA is an experimental piece by director duo
Rammatik.
Näytös juhlistaa pohjoismaisen elokuvan puolesta työskentelevän Walhallan
kanssa alkanutta levitysyhteistyötä. Walhalla järjestää pohjoismaisen tanssielokuvan kiertueen Suomessa vuosina 2015–2016.

Festivaalin avajaispäivänä 19.3. järjestetään elokuva-alan ammattilaisille ja
kulttuurin kirjoittajille suunnattu keskustelutilaisuus tanssielokuvan julkisen keskustelun, arvioivan kritiikin ja analyyttisen kirjoittamisen ympärillä.
Keskusteluun osallistuvat Loikan 60secondsdance-tanssielokuvakilpailun
yhteistyökumppanit Ruotsista ja Tanskasta sekä kulttuurialan vaikuttajia
ja kirjoittajia. Tapaamisessa nostetaan esiin tanssielokuvan erityislaatua ja
termistöä sekä keskustellaan tanssielokuvan analyyseistä, kuratoinnista ja
kritiikistä. Tilaisuuden tavoitteena on herättää julkista keskustelua tanssielokuvasta yhtenä merkittävänä elokuvamuotona ja tuomaan uusia avauksia

Festivaalin ProTalk - seminaari käsittelee suomalaisen tanssielokuvan nykyistä tilaa ja sen kehittämismahdollisuuksia tulevaisuudessa. Keskustelupaneelissa haastatellaan alaa edistäneitä kansainvälisten hankkeiden
organisaattoreita ja keskustellaan taide- ja kulttuuripäättäjien kanssa mitä
suomalaisen tanssielokuvan edistämishankkeita olisi mahdollista käynnistää
ja miten tanssielokuvan rahoitusta tulisi kanavoida jatkossa eri rahoittajatahojen osalta.

Loikka dance video jam session brings together cinematographers, choreographers and dancers for a informal evening on a shared dance floor. You
are welcome to bring your camera, body and/or ideas.
After the jam session, the created material will be made available to all
participants on an open source basis. This ensures that all interested participants are free to edit and remix their own versions of all the material
captured in the session.
You can also join the jam session as an audience member, and we welcome
members of the public who are not dance or film professionals. Since the
audience will be visible in the captured materials, all participants, including
audience members, also grant a release for the use and distribution of the
video material.

perusti vuosittaisen Ciné Tapis Rouge -elokuvafestivaalin vuonna 2007.
Quebeciläistä ja kansainvälistä elokuvaa esittelevä festivaali osallistuu myös
quebeciläisen elokuvan levittämiseen ja kansainväliseen elokuvavaihtoon.
Ciné Tapis Rouge on välittänyt yli 350 elokuvaa kansainvälisesti aina Braziliasta Suomeen.
Cyntia Botello on meksikolaissyntyinen monipuolinen freelance-tanssitaiteilija ja -pedagogi Ruotsista. Hän on opiskellut Meksikon Universidad Nacional Autónoma -yliopistossa kansainvälisiä suhteita. Cyntia on ruotsalaisen ScreenDance -festivaalin perustaja, tuottaja ja taiteellinen johtaja.

Marion Poeth on tehnyt maisteritutkintonsa tanssielokuvatutkimuksesta
teatteritutkimuksen laitoksesta Utrechtin yliopistosta. Aiemmin hän on opiskellut nykytanssia Amsterdam School of the Artsissa sekä vuorovaikutteista
designia ja elokuvaa Sint Lucasin ja Lincolnin yliopistoissa. Vuodesta 2010

Martine Dekker has worked as a business manager since 1994 for several art institutes and dance companies in The Netherlands, for instance the

Marion Poeth received her Masters in Theatre Studies from the University of
Utrecht with a study on screen dance, having previously studied contemporary dance at Amsterdam School of the Arts and interaction design & film
at Sint Lucas and the University of Lincoln. Since 2010 she has worked at
Cinedans as the programme manager and since 2014 as artistic programmer
and producer.
Näyttelijä Virginie Dubois siirtyi lavoilta elokuvateollisuuden pariin vuonna
1997. Hän on työskennellyt tuotantoassistenttina mm. Max Filmsille ja dokumenttielokuvien tuottajana elokuvissa Carnets d’un grand détour ja Over
My Dead Body Coop Vidéo de Montrealissa. Virginie johtaa Coopin tutkimus- ja suunnitteluosastoa. Parhaillaan hän työskentelee elokuvantekijöiden
Richard Jutrasin ja Lawrence Côté-Collinsin kanssa heidän uusimpien teostensa parissa.
Director Vanessa-Tatjana Beerli founded Ciné Tapis Rouge festival in 2007.
The festival is based on film exchanges between Quebec and foreign countries annually. The festival contributes to the international prestige of Quebec films and allows the Quebec public to discover new foreign programming. So far, no less than 350 films have travelled between Quebec and
Europe and South America. Her short film TV dinner ... (Burp!) produced
by Factor 7 was nominated for Genies Awards in 2005. Vanessa is currently
writing her first feature film, Tacca, and will realize a short film Les porteurs
in the fall 2015.
A trained actress, Virginie Dubois moved from the stage to film production
in 1997, working as a production assistant for companies such as Max Films.
She eventually joined the Coop as a coordinator. In 2011, she produced the
documentaries Carnets d’un grand détour and Over My Dead Body. She is
currently working with Richard Jutras and Lawrence Côté-Collins on developing their latest projects. Virginie is the director of the Coop’s research and
creation division.

Tanssielokuvantekijä Maia Elisabeth Sørensen opiskeli tanssia ja koreografiaa Martha Graham Schoolissa New Yorkissa. Hänen päättötyönsä oli hänen
ensimmäinen tanssielokuvansa NUDE (2007). Elokuvan tekemisen rinnalla
Maia työskentelee myös 60secondsdance- ja Danshallernen ScreenMoves
-projektissa koordinaattorina, sekä konsultoi muuta tanssielokuvatoimintaa
Tanskassa. Hänen elokuvansa Danced off the Ground voitti vuonna 2014
kansainvälisen verkossa toimivan tanssielokuvakilpailun kategoriassa New
Creator/Innovation. Lisäksi elokuva Satellit voitti kategorian ‘Best experiment’ tanskalaisessa Ekko Shortlist Awards 2014 -kilpailussa. Maia Elsiabeth
Sørensenin palkitut elokuvat nähdään Loikan 2015 ohjelmistossa.
Cyntia Botello is a Mexican born versatile artist working on dance, choreography and pedagogy as freelancer. She has an academic background in
International Relations from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico.
Cyntia is founder, artistic director and producer of ScreenDance Festival in
Stockholm.
Maia Elisabeth Sørensen is a Danish dance filmmaker and a coordinator
for ScreenMoves in Dansehallerne and 60secondsdance. She studied dance
and choreography at the Martha Graham School (New York). Her graduating
project in 2007 was her first dance film NUDE. Her awarded films Danced off
the Ground and Satellit are screened at the 2015 Loikka festival. Danced off
the Ground won New Creator/Innovation at the online international dance
film competition IDILL 2014, and the dance film Satellit won the category
‘Best Experiment’ at the Danish Ekko Shortlist Awards 2014.
KATI KALLIO
ALEKSIS SALUSJÄRVI
Loikka-festivaalin taiteellinen johtaja työskentelee tanssitaiteilijana, tanssielokuvatekijänä sekä tanssiopettajana. Kati on liittynyt Loikkaan festivaalin
alusta alkaen; ennen toimimistaan taiteellisena johtajana Kati on mm. vetänyt festivaalin yleisötyötä sekä osallistunut näytösten kuratointiin.
Aleksis työskentelee toimittajana sekä mm. päätoimittaa kirjallisuuden verkkolehti Kiiltomato.netiä. Hänellä on vuosien kokemus kulttuurijournalismista
sekä eri kulttuuriohjelmien tuottamisesta esimerkiksi Ylelle.
Dance artist, dance filmmaker and dance teacher Kati Kallio has been one of
the key people behind Loikka festival for all of its history. Before being appointed Artistic Director, her previous responsibilities with Loikka included
overseeing the festival’s audience outreach programs as well as organizing
dance film screenings and workshops for schoolchildren and students.
KARINA LUJAN
Tuottaja, freelance-kirjoittaja sekä tanssiopettaja Karina on uusin Loikka-tiimin jäsen. Hänellä on intohimo tanssia ja elokuvaa kohtaan, mikä kumpuaa
vahvasta kokemuksesta niin taidekasvatuksen ja -hallinnon kuin tanssin,
teatterin ja visuaalisen median parista.
Producer, freelance art writer and dance teacher Karina Lujan is the newest
Loikka team member. Her passion for dance and film is well-grounded in her
diverse education and work experience in art education and administration,
dance and physical theatre and in visual media.

Aleksis works widely in the culture field as a journalist and also as editor in
chief for literature web magazine Kiiltomato.net. He has years of experience
as a culture journalist for example at the Public Broadcasting Company of
Finland.
HANNA PAJALA-ASSEFA
Hanna on yksi MAD Production -kollektiivin perustajista ja toimi Loikka-festivaalin taiteellisena johtajana 2008–2012. Hän on työskennellyt laajasti koreografina, tanssijana ja tuottajana sekä ohjannut ja tehnyt koreografioita
lukuisiin tanssilyhytelokuviin. Hanna vastaa myös LoikkaPro-tuotannosta.
Choreographer-dancer Hanna Pajala-Assefa is one of the founding members
of Loikka’s organizing association MAD Production, and the former Artistic
Director of Loikka festival from 2008 to 2012. Hanna has worked widely as
a choreographer, dancer and a producer of dance. She has choreographed
stage and site-specific pieces and has worked as a director and choreographer in dance short films. At Loikka, she oversees the festival’s series of
LoikkaPro seminars for dance and cinema professionals.
BENIAMINO BORGHI
Tanssija, koreografi, elokuvatekijä, graafinen suunnittelija, kitaristi ja italialaisen ruoan ystävä – muun muassa. Beniamino työskentelee parhaillaan
tanssitaiteilijana, koreografina ja multimediateosten kehittäjänä Suomessa.
Loikassa Beniamino vastaa myös elokuvateosten logistiikan koordinoinnista.
Dancer, choreographer, filmmaker, graphic designer, interior architect, beach
guitar player, italian tortellini cook, carpenter, high tech addict, professional
happy complainer. Currently he works as a dance artist and choreographer
in Finland and develops interactive multimedia performances. At Loikka,
Beniamino’s responsibilities include overseeing film and media traffic and
helping coordinate the festival’s program.

Filosofinen kysymys tanssin suhteen kuuluu, missä vaiheessa liike muuttuu tanssiksi. Missä vaiheessa satunnainen liikkuva ruumis alkaa ilmaista
liikkeellä jotakin?
A philosophical question: at what stage does movement become dance?
At what stage does random body movement begin to express something?
Elokuvan suhteen taas liikkeen tallentaminen on koko taidemuodon syntymisen
avain. Kun kuvat muuttuivat liikkeeksi, siirryimme uuteen aikakauteen. Olavi Paavolainen kuvaa modernismia silmää varten syntyneenä taiteena. Liike ja vauhti, halu ja nälkä kokea kaikki, olivat modernismin polttoainetta. Auto, sähkövalo,
metropolien vilkas elämä ja elokuvakameran liike kuvasivat kokonaista uutta ihmisyyttä. Tähän samaan hetkeen ajoittuu myös nykytanssin syntyminen. Modernismi
muutti ihmisen käsitystä itsestään ja kulttuuristaan.
In cinema, the recording of movement is the key to the birth of the very genre. We
entered a new era as images began to move. Olavi Paavolainen describes Modernism as art generated for the eye, fuelled by movement and speed, and a desire
and thirst to experience everything. The motor car, electric light, the teeming metropolis and the movie camera epitomised a whole new humanity. It is also around
this time that modern dance was born. Modernism altered people’s concept of
themselves and their culture.
Elokuvan ja tanssin leikkauspinta löytyykin hyvin täsmällisesti liikkeestä, johon molemmat ilmaisutavat perustuvat. On tuskin sattumaa, että moderni tanssi syntyi
samaan aikaan elokuvan kanssa. Elokuva vapautti meidät paikkaan ja aikaan sidotusta taiteesta, ja tanssi vapautti käsityksemme kehostamme objektina. Ennen
kaikkea nykytanssi vapautti naisen ruumiin kulttuurin koulimana esteettisenä objektina. Vartalo ei ollut enää arvioivaa katsetta varten tai koriste. Nykytanssi teki
kehosta samanaikaisesti instrumentin ja subjektin.
The precise point at which film and dance intersect lies in the movement fundamental to both modes of expression. It is hardly any coincidence that modern
dance was born at the same time as the movie. The film freed us from art bound
to a specific time and place, and dance our concept of the body as an object.
Above all, modern dance freed the female body as an aesthetic object schooled
by culture. The body was no longer something to be viewed with a critical eye, or
an ornament. In modern dance, the body became both instrument and subject.
Tanssielokuvaa yhdistää kaksi modernismin kärkitaidetta, ja omana lajinaan se kiteytyy jonkinlaiseksi taiteiden huipuksi. Liikkeen kautta tanssielokuva välittää silmälle sen kuvan ihmisestä, joka astui kaunotaiteen kaanonista ulos. Jos tanssielokuvalla voisi ajatella olevan jokin viesti, se on välittömyyden ja riippumattomuuden
viesti.
The dance film combines two leading Modernist arts, while as a genre in itself it
is a sort of culmination. Through movement, the dance film presents the eye with
an image of the human being that has detached itself from the fine arts canon. If
the dance film is thought of as conveying a message, then that message is one of
immediacy and autonomy.
Digitaalinen kulttuuri on lisännyt tätä riippumattomuutta ryöpsähdyksenä. Siinä
missä elokuva oli ensimmäiset sata vuottaan välinekeskeinen ja kalustoltaan kallis
taidemuoto, digitaalinen vallankumous on määritellyt tanssielokuvan perustavalla
tavalla uudeksi lajiksi.
Digital culture has increased this autonomy in one great leap. Whereas the film
was, for the first hundred years, a form of art reliant on tools and expensive equipment, the digital revolution has fundamentally defined the dance film as a new
genre.
Tekniikan halventuessa ja yleistyessä tanssin liikkeestä tulee arkipäiväisempää. Se
osallistuu hyvin mutkattomasti arkiseen elämään. Tanssielokuvissa silmiinpistävää
onkin katuvilinän ja julkisten tilojen toistuminen miljöönä. Siinä missä perinteinen
elokuva toteuttaa tarkkaa kuvasuunnittelua ja fiktiota tuottavaa käsikirjoitusta, uudempi tanssielokuva on kuin todistajanlausuntoa.
As the technology gets cheaper and spreads, dance movement becomes more
commonplace. It assumes a very straightforward role in everyday life. The frequent
featuring of busy streets and public spaces as milieux is in fact conspicuous in
dance films. Whereas the traditional film adheres to a precise shooting plan and a
script producing fiction, the more recent dance film is like a testimony.
Tanssin muuntuva rooli taiteena on avainasemassa. Se voi olla rituaalista ja juhlallisen merkitsevää yhtä hyvin kuin se voi olla satunnaista ja ohimenevää katukulttuurista irtoavaa liikettä.
The changing role of dance as a form of art is all-important. It may bear ritual and
ceremonial significance just as easily as random, transient movement that stands
apart from street culture.
Kun kamera kadottaa vaikeakäyttöisyytensä samalla kun tanssi kadottaa seremoniallisen luonteensa, jäljelle jää pelkkää ihmisyyttä. Voikin väittää, että tanssielokuvaa ei tarvitse osata katsoa. Kynnys ymmärrykseen on suora ja kehollinen. Aivan
kuin pienelle lapselle ei tarvitse selittää tanssia – hän osallistuu siihen suoraan.
As the camera ceases to be cumbersome and dance loses its ceremonial character,
all that remains is humanity. It may be claimed that the viewer does not need to
know how to watch a dance film. The threshold to understanding is direct and corporeal. Just as there is no need to explain dance to little children – they just join in.

Loikka is Finland’s annual dance film festival.
