Geocaching & Letterboxing Geocaching is a recreational activity permitted in Richland Park. It involves the use of a hand-held GPS (Global Positioning System). Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates (a waypoint) and then attempt to find a "cache" (container) hidden at that location. The most common form of geocaching involves individuals placing caches and sharing the locations of these caches on the Internet (www.geocaching.com). Participants use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, participants sign the logbook found in the cache container. They also post their “find” on the on-line logbook. They may also place or remove appropriate items from the cache. Letterboxing (www.letterboxing.org) is similar but involves using only clues to find a hidden container. There are currently three geocaches in Richland Park and one at the municipal building property on Dickey Road. Permits A cache may not be placed in a Township park or on land owned by the Township before securing a geocaching permit from Richland Township. Each cache requires its own permit. Persons applying for a permit must provide a copy of their driver’s license, telephone number, email address, and the web site address on which the cache will be posted. A permit is valid for a period of three years from the date issued. Upon expiration of the permit, the geocache or letterbox must be either re-permitted or removed. The Geocaching Permit can be found on our webpage: www.richland.pa.us or for information please contact the Parks and Recreation Department. Trail Etiquette Respect other users on the trails. Show courtesy. Anticipate other trail users around the corners and blind spots. Respect wildlife you are traveling through their home. Be friendly and courteous. Greet other folks with a simple “Hello”! Runners and hikers need to yield to equestrians. Bicyclists should yield to everyone. Downhill traffic should yield to uphill traffic. When in doubt, give others users the right of way. Announce yourself when approaching others on the trail. Use your voice to warn equestrians, not bells or horns, which may frighten the horses. Stay on the trail. Do not use the trails when they are wet! Operate within your abilities at all times. Leave no trace. Pick up litter. Could Emergency Responders Find You? Let’s Help them out! Missing or inconspicuous house number signs can cost a life! House numbers should be clear enough so that police, firefighters, and paramedics can quickly locate properties in an emergency. Numbers should be at least 3 inches tall, reflective and of a color that would contrast from the background to which it is affixed. If the building is serviced by a mailbox at the street a house number must appear on both sides of the mail box. So this year when you change your clocks, replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors also check your house numbers. When is a barking dog considered a public nuisance? A continuously barking dog that can not or will not be controlled by the owner, and which disturbs the neighbors, can be deemed to be disturbing the peace (or a public nuisance) by the police. Richland Township’s Animal Noise Ordinance provides the police with jurisdiction in such situations, however, 90% of noisy dog problems can be solved with common sense and courtesy with a neighborly conversation. The key question to ask yourself is: Is the activity unreasonable under the circumstances? It is unreasonable to expect complete silence, and most pet owners do not want their pet to be an irritation. If a problem persists, it is important to talk to a responsible adult at the residence, not the children or teenagers of the home. If the problem persists contact the Northern Regional Police Department at 724-443-7848. A representative of the department will ask you about the disturbance, including the address of the animal, the duration, times and frequency of the disturbance and a description of the animal. There may be many reasons why an owner fails to curb a pet’s excessive barking. 4019 Dickey Road Gibsonia, PA 15044 Phone: 724.443.5921 or Fax: 724.443.8860 [email protected] Program Registration Form ( PLEASE PRINT) YOU MAY COPY THIS FORM FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS Please fill out a separate registration form for each program.
