Drew is an 11-year veteran as a player in the NBA, and has coached in the league for 17 years as an assistant. He becomes the 11th head coach in team history. Search View Atlanta Jobs - 1699 jobs today Find Atlanta Sports contacts See all Atlanta contacts Get the latest local business news delivered to your inbox every afternoon The 52-year-old said he always knew he wanted to be a head coach. “I thank God for my patience,” Drew said. “I’ve always had confidence in my ability to take the next step.” Drew’s ascension to coaching’s pinnacle came on another milestone for the Kansas City, Mo., native: his 24th wedding anniversary with his wife Sharon. The former point guard for the Pistons, Kings, Lakers and Clippers, had served the past six seasons as the top assistant for Mike Woodson, who was fired last month, despite leading the Hawks to three straight playoff appearances. Woodson was fired after the Orlando Magic swept the team in the second round of the NBA Playoffs. Woodson was oft criticized for a lack of offensive ingenuity. The team’s exit from the 2010 Playoffs was the second time in as many years it had been swept from second round. Drew defended his predecessor, crediting him for six straight years of improved regular season performance. The Hawks won just 13 games in Woodson’s first season, improving to 53 wins by his last. Drew said despite his six-year tenure as an assistant, he would bring “a new voice” to the locker room. The father of three is said to be widely respected among the ownership group and the players. His first priority, Drew said, is convincing all-star shooting guard Joe Johnson to return. Johnson will be among the top stars in free agency. He was the Hawks leading scorer last season, but faded in the playoffs.
