2 ½ Day Workshops for 2015
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY 9:00 AM TO 5:00 PM; SUNDAY 9:00 AM TO NOON.
Got Cashmere?
Norma Bromley, Instructor
This workshop will begin with an introduction about American Cashmere
goats: their history, intelligence, hardiness, low maintenance, and of
course, their fabulous fiber! Samples of various states of American
Cashmere fiber will be presented to the class including fiber combed
from the Cashmere goat, processed roving, handspun and machine spun
yarn, and even felted Cashmere fiber ‘waste’. Also a variety of different
fibers (silk, wool, etc.) blended with Cashmere will be shown to raise
awareness about the range of Cashmere fiber applications. A number of
different hand-spinning techniques will be taught, including ‘inch-worm’,
long draw, and double long draw, utilizing pure Cashmere fiber, as well
as Cashmere blended with wool and silk. Materials fee $60; Skill level:
Intermediate.
Quigley – A Four-Tie Unit Weave
Diane Click, Instructor
Quigley, also known as Twill Tie, is a four-tie unit weave. (Summer
and Winter is a two-tie unit weave). The four tie-down ends are
threaded in twill order allowing you to weave a variety of twill designs
in the background in addition to the main design. The possibilities are
endless! Students will review tied unit weaves and learn to control the
background design(s) while weaving blocks of pattern. An 8-shaft
loom is required and drafts will be provided. Students will work at their
own looms. Materials Fee: $10. Skill level: Intermediate.
Students: 10 maximum.
Handwoven Lace Techniques
Karen Donde, Instructor
Participants will gain a good working understanding of the differences
between Huck Lace, Swedish Lace and Atwater-Bronson Lace and learn
how to design lace weaves successfully. They will bring 4- or 8-shaft looms
warped according to instructions that will be provided in advance. Participants
will weave several samples, round-robin style, on a variety of different threading
patterns for each structure. Students will wash, dry and press day-one samples
to assess wet-finishing results. Materials fee $15; Skill level: All.

Create a Classic Nantucket Basket
Don Ferris, Instructor
Nantuckets are beautiful, intricate heirlooms. Help preserve the
history of these treasures by experiencing every critical step in the
process and creating an authentic classic. You’ll craft and set up the
staves, weave the entire basket, complete the rim, do the finishing
steps and dress it with “scrimshaw”. Students also receive an
exclusive, take-home review manual to help complete future
projects. It’s an enriched learning environment with both studentto-student and student-to-teacher reinforcement. Materials fee: $50
(Cherry handle with bone attachments, optional $32.) Skill level: All.
Wood Turning
Dan Hoffman, Instructor
In this class students from beginners to the more experienced will learn to
be better turners. In a safe manner, you can improve your skill set and have
fun doing so. This will be an open forum, so try something new or improve on
what you know. Materials Fee $25, plus an additional $25 if you wish to rent a
lathe. All skill levels. Maximum students: 4.
FIBER UNIVERSITY
Sara Norine James, Instructor
Explore all aspects of the fiber arts in this fun and
comprehensive class: Felting, Plying, Crochet, Knitting,
Sewing and Weaving. Oh My! Beginners will leave with
the skills needed to dive deeper into the world of yarn.
Intermediate workshop participants will break free of
traditional habits as they integrate the many skills
involved in various fiber crafts and create original
art pieces they can wear home from this fun-filled weekend. We will focus on design, play, and skill building
as we construct original accessories together. Each piece will be as unique as the makers that create
them. Materials Fee $20. All skill levels. Students: 12 maximum.

Boundweave Rug – A Weft-Face Twill
Tom Knisley, Instructor
The bold patterns created in weft-face twill are often associated
with saddle blankets and the textiles of the American Southwest.
The thick and heavy nature of this weave makes it ideal for rugs,
saddle blankets, place mats, table runners and hot pads.
Warping the loom for Bound-weave is a simple task. The warp
threads are sleyed for an open sett, often not more than six ends
per inch. The open sett allows the weft threads to slide down
and cover the warp when beaten firmly. The patterns develop
by following familiar twill treadlings and weaving with multiple
shuttles, each carrying a different color of yarn. Two, three, and
four shuttles weave in rotation following the different treadling
patterns. The warping is fast and the weaving is slow, but the
final result is nothing less than satisfying. Each student will
weave at their own loom. The looms will be threaded to a draft
that will be assigned prior to class and the looms should be ready to weave on when the student
arrives. Materials fee: None. Skill level: Intermediate. Maximum students: 12.
Creating a Bead Embroidered Necklace
Linda Larson, Instructor
In this class, students will learn basic bead embroidery
stitches, edges and fringes. They will create beaded bezels
around cabochons, using peyote stitch, which is adhered to
a substrate material. Students will learn different techniques
used to fill in all the spaces around the focal. They will also
learn how to attach backing, and how to edge the beaded
piece. Bead embroidery is different from any other beading
technique. Students will combine needle, thread, fabric and
beads to create stunning pieces of wearable art.
Materials fee: $25-50 per kit. Skill level: Beginner.
Tapestry: Design it – Weave it!
Tommye McClure Scanlin, Instructor
Shapes, colors, textures and other design elements offer endless
possibilities in tapestry weaving. Participants will explore design
concepts and how they are useful in designing for tapestry by working
with paper and also on their own looms. Materials fee: $20.
Skill level: Intermediate.

Andean Pebble Weave On A Backstrap Loom
Laverne Waddington, Instructor
Andean Pebble Weave, with its characteristic spotty, or “pebbled” background,
is perhaps the most easily recognized of the many pick-up weaving techniques
practiced in Peru and Bolivia. It is not only beautiful to behold but also a
pleasure to weave, as it is partly loom-controlled. It is one of the faster pick-up
weaving techniques to execute. Using simple narrow body-tensioned warps,
students will learn the principles of this structure while creating both traditional
and contemporary patterns. Materials fee: $10; Skill level: All.
Not Your Grandma’s Dye-Pot
Kathrin Weber, Instructor
In this class we approach the dyeing process with a spirit of
experimentation and creative license while learning technical
aspects that make cotton yarn vibrant and colorfast. You will learn
fundamentals for dye application to produce one of a kind, technically
sound and color-fast, hand-dyed yarn. You will learn techniques for
space-dyeing skeins and warps, how to use dyes safely and how to
set up your own dye kitchen. I don’t teach recipes in my dye classes.
I teach seeing the colors within the color. What does it take to
change emerald green to olive green? How do you move from purple
to raspberry? How is one red different from another… and how do
you achieve the one you want? I think of it as learning to dye by
eye, similar to learning to play music by ear. If you know how to see
what elements a color is made of, then you don’t need recipes.
Materials Fee: $15, plus if students wish, they may purchase pre-wound
warps for $30 each. Skill level: Any Max: 10.

THURSDAY AFTERNOON Mini-Workshops for 2015
Making Tassels / Class duration: 1 Hour.
with Peggy DiNegro
Tassels are easy to make but there are some “tricky” bits that can make your
tassel really beautiful. All supplies furnished, but small sharp scissors would
be helpful. Fee: $10.00. Extra yarns available for purchase should you wish
to make more tassels after class.
paddle warping / Class duration: 1 Hour.
with Berna Lowenstein
Paddles allow you to warp with more than one thread at
a time. It really speeds up warping, so you can get to
the fun bits faster. See a demonstration of how to use a
warping paddle and try it out! Class length: 1 hour.
Cost: $3 per person. Minimum students: 5.
Maximum students: 20, or whatever the room will hold.
Cute Reindeer Basket / Class duration: 2 Hours.
with Sharon Baiardi
Project consists of a black metal reindeer, basket to be woven, choice of colors
in waxed thread, ribbon, jingle bells, battery tea light and all instructions to make
this beautiful (cute) Reindeer. Basket is 2” high and 10” in circumference. The
Reindeer stands 4” tall (8” including rack). Class size: 12. Cost: $25.
Turtle-doodle / Class duration: 2 Hours.
with Fonda Haddad
Turtle-doodles are fun! No two are alike and make for a non-care
pet. Using a prepared gourd-turtle composed of a miniature
gourd for head and gourd top for a body, a turtle is created. The gourds will be pre-assembled and painted with several coats
of white enamel (a few will be natural if some prefer wood burning
instead of markers). Students will be supplied with two permanent
marker pens (fine and ultra-fine); colored permanent markers will be available. Workshop time: 2 hours. Class size: 10 students.
Cost $18. All supplies included.

Warp Paint the Color of the Year / Class duration: 3 Hours.
by Judi Jetson
Dyeing your own multi-color warp in the latest color will bring new
dimension to your handwoven scarves or dish towels, and is fun and easy
to do. We’ll start with the Pantone® color of the year for 2015, then choose
2 or 3 spring-type tones to complement it. We will be using fiber reactive
dyes, which work with plant-based fiber (cotton, linen, ramie, bamboo,
Tencel®, hemp, viscose rayon- and even silk). Bring up to 3 warps;
one can be a skeined weft, if you like. Instructor will bring the dye,
supplies and plastic gloves. Workshop size: 20 Students.
Fee: $27.
Very Easy Lace-Edged Triangle Scarf / Class duration: 3 Hours.
with Rebecca Bowen
This triangular scarf is suitable for the beginning knitter who wishes to
learn new techniques. Most of the knitting is plain garter stitch.
Students will knit the scarf to their preferred dimensions. Optimum
finished size: approx. 50” wingspan, 25” deep at point. Students will
learn to select the correct needle/yarn sizes for a project, how to read
and use charts in their knitting and basic blocking techniques.
Materials list: Fingering Weight Option: 730 yds fingering weight yarn,
24” circular knitting needle size 3.25 mm (US #3) OR 3.5 mm (US #4),
DK Weight Option: 610 yds DK weight yarn, 24” circular knitting needle
size 4mm (US #6) OR 4.5 mm (US #7), Worsted Weight Option: 470 yds worsted weight yarn,
24” circular knitting needle size 5mm (US #8 or 5.5 mm (US # 9). Fee: $25. Note: Students will need
to bring yarn, needles, locking stitch markers, and their gadget bag of tools. Very narrow satin ribbon
is helpful, as is a method of keeping your place on a chart (magnet board, bookmark, chart tape).
Australian Locker Hooking/ Class duration: 3 Hours.
with Norma Bromley
Using unspun wool roving, a locker hook, and rug canvas, we
will create a small, basic “hooked rug”. It’s a great way to
finally utilize some of that ‘questionable roving’ stash we all
have put away after realizing it is too much fiber or too coarse,
etc., to use for garments. Students will decide and draw their
own design on the canvas, and then start ‘hooking’. You’ll
discover what a rewarding activity to make use of all that
roving (or yarn, rags, etc.) to make coasters, chair pads, bags,
and rugs. Class Level: Beginner. Maximum Class Size: 15.
Materials Fee: $25 includes rug canvas, locker hook, and roving.

Textured Crochet / Class duration: 3 Hours.
with Barbara Pietruk
Make a wash cloth or work up samples of several
different stitches and techniques in this fun class
that takes your crochet stitches off the flat plane of
fabric. We will use long stitches, post stitches, and
crossed stitches to create cables, a woven fabric
and other fascinating textured effects that are so
much more than just bobbles or popcorn. We will
practice using both charts and written instructions.
Experience: Must know basic crochet, ch, sc, dc, and how to read a pattern and count your stitches.
If you haven’t crocheted in a while, please make a practice piece to help your hand memory and set your
gauge. Materials: Students should bring worsted weight knitting yarn, (cotton, wool, synthetic are all fine,
more important that it not be too fine). Please also bring several partial balls and/or project left-overs to
make your samples. NO FUZZY, NO NOVELTY YARNS, and NO BLACK or extremely dark colors. Variegated
yarns are fine. Crochet hooks: ranging in size from H through J. Safety pin type markers are a must. Instructor can provide graph paper and colored pencils for students to practice making a chart from a
written pattern. Fee: $4.00 for handouts. Maximum number of students: 8.
Summer Spinning / Class duration: 4 Hours.
with Ginger Clark
Summers in Florida are hot, hot, hot! Even with air conditioning, it’s hard to
escape the heat and spinning wool can still be less than appealing. So let’s spin
some fabulous non-wool fibers that are great for summer yarns! We will spin
fibers that are often thought of as being hard to spin, like bamboo or cotton or
just old fashioned like flax. Learn to spin beautiful, cool summer yarns that you
can use for knitting, crocheting, or weaving. During this workshop, participants
will spin cotton, flax, hemp, Tencel®, rayon bamboo, and fake cashmere. You
must be able to spin a continuous thread and bring a spinning wheel in good
working condition. Fiber and written material will be provided by the instructor.
Students: 10, max. Instructor will provide all materials. Materials fee: $15.
Instructor fee: $35.
Photography for Artists and Craftspeople / Class duration: 4 Hours.
by Sara Norine James
Together, we will explore ways to
improve photographic imagery and
documentation of your creative
processes and finished work. Using
any camera, this hands-on workshop explores lighting, composition,
and camera operation. Students to provide their own cameras, cell phone or other portable electronics,
the unit’s operational manual, and personal items to photograph. In this mini-workshop, students will
create beautiful images that will help them generate interest in their handmade creations and creative
processes. Cost: $ 40. Class size: 12 students.

INKLE PICKUP / Class duration: 4 Hours.
with Janean Easley
Inkle weaving produces a narrow, warp faced band. ‘Pick-Up’ is a warp
manipulation technique that adds design elements to our weaving that
aren’t possible through plain/tabby weave. This workshop will focus on
the ‘Pick-Up’ techniques of Inkle weaving. We’ll have some discussion,
learn how to read our pattern, warp our loom, and begin work on a band.
We’ll look at both the “Basket Weave” and “Horizontal Bar” set up. Some
basic Inkle skills are necessary as we’ll be warping in class. Participants will need to bring the following: Inkle Loom, belt type shuttle, DP knitting needle or large tapestry needle (to manipulate warps),
scissors, 50 +/- heddles, at least 3 balls of yarn in contrasting colors (non-stretchy-- such as a perle
cotton or crochet cotton), patience and a sense of humor. Participants are encouraged to contact
instructor prior to the workshop with any questions. [email protected]
Class time: 4 Hours. 12 Students. Fee: $20.
WIRE DRAWINGS / Class duration: 4 Hours.
with Peggy Ward
This class uses wire for
“drawing.” You learn which
tools to use and how to use
them to execute your
image with wire. Then,
there are options for
“filling”. You can make a
polymer clay sheet with beautiful surface techniques and press your wire drawing into it. Or, we will use
paper and an acrylic fluid to seal the wire onto the paper. The finished pieces are very lightweight, making them great for jewelry. If you decide to “go big,” they could be wall art, or parts of a wind chime, or
whatever your imagination dictates. Class time: 4 Hours. Students: 20. Fee: $40.
Warp Weighted Looms / Class duration: 2 Hours.
with Berna Lowenstein
The warp weighted loom was used by prehistoric people to weave large pieces of
cloth. It was still in use in the mid-20th century in northeastern Europe. See a
slide show and learn the history of the loom and how it worked.
Students: 5-20. Fee: $3.
CONTINUOUS STRAND WEAVING / Class duration: 3 Hours.
with Cindy Koedoot
If you love to weave towels and give them as gifts, here’s a chance to
upgrade the gift and add a coordinating dish cloth. In this class, we
will weave a dishcloth and learn the continuous strand weaving technique
on a 10-½ inch loom. It’s the perfect portable project! We will also
look at other uses for the loom, i.e. scarves, bedspreads, etc.
Fee: (includes the loom, weaving supplies and yarn for at least one
project), $ 45. There is no minimum skill level required, and
students need only bring a smile. Class size: 12-15 students.

Dragonfly Earrings / Class duration: 2 Hours.
with Sonia Barriger
Learn to make a pair of Dragonfly earrings, using crystals,
daggers, silver spacers & silver wire. It would be helpful if you
already know how to do wire-wrap, but it’s not necessary.
Number of students: 15. Fee: $15. All supplies and tools will be
furnished. Bring needle nose pliers & jewelry wire cutters.
Instructor to provide tools, if necessary.
DORSET BUTTONS / Class duration: 2 Hours.
with Ellen Turner
Before the Industrial Revolution, there was literally a cottage industry in
Dorset, England making buttons for garments. In this mini, we will be
making contemporary versions of the traditional Dorset button. We will
be using a ring wrapped and stitched with colorful yarns. You can make
buttons from the same yarn as a sweater you are knitting, for example.
Students can expect to finish 2 buttons. Class Limit: 10 students.
Class fee of $15 includes materials. Please bring scissors.
Mini Stick Tray or Basket / Class duration: 2 Hours.
with Fonda Haddad
Soap dish, card holder or small basket will be created from 2 sizes of
reed or natural materials. We will weave with plain weave. The tray
basket will be from 4”-8” in diameter. No basket weaving experience is
necessary. Students: 10. Fee: $15. Thou Shalt “Knot” / Class duration: 1 Hour.
with Berna Lowenstein
Learn to tie all the knots a weaver needs, and when and where to
use them. Also, learn which ones NOT to use. This is a hands-on
program and Berna will provide all materials. Students: 5-12.
Fee: $3.
