Imagination comes to life
Every year since 2003, IKEA has run the Soft Toys for Education campaign
to support children’s education. For every soft toy sold during the campaign,
the IKEA Foundation donates 1 euro to UNICEF and Save the Children.

reaching more than 11 million children through 99 projects in 46 countries!
This year’s Soft Toys campaign will run from 9 Nov 2014 – 3 Jan 2015,
together with a Give Twice initiative where you can choose to donate your
purchased soft toy to our selected charity, Food from the Heart.
New for this year’s campaign, is a drawing competition
from 8-23 Nov 2014. We want to give kids
(0-12 years old) of our IKEA FAMILY members, the first
chance to design the next soft toy collection for IKEA,
at a special event on 8 Nov 2014.
The main idea is that drawings of children’s dream
soft toys are turned into real soft toys. These would be
sold in IKEA stores worldwide as a limited collection
next year. And of course, for every soft toy sold 1
euro is donated to UNICEF and Save the Children.

What to consider when planning a bed area
Firstly, decide on what type of bed comfort, style of bed and space
for storage you need. Whether you choose open or closed storage,
both solutions have advantages and disadvantages. For example,
closed storage will protect your clothes from dust.
Secondly, decide how you want to organise your clothes – By usage?
By season? By style? This will influence your choice and placement
of interior fittings, such as shelves, baskets, drawers, etc. Lastly,
think about where you most need task, general and mood light.
For small spaces, a bed with built-in
shelves/storage offers the same
function as a bedside table.
Bed linen provides more than
comfort. It can also contribute
to a bedroom’s overall colour
scheme or style.

Industrialism was one of the inspirations
behind the functionalist style that emerged
in the ’50s and ’60s. The bathroom series
GUNNERN gives something of a nostalgic
trip back to a metal bathroom cabinet of

the design language of industrial buildings

1. Heat up a non-stick pot with olive oil
and fry the onion and garlic to fragrant
without colour.
2. Add in the potatoes and stir fry about
3 minutes.
3. Pour in the stock/water to boil and
simmer until the potatoes are softened.
4. Add in the milk. Blend the mixture
together with the cooked potatoes
until it becomes a puree.
5. Cook again the puree potato until
boil and season to taste (butter, salt
and pepper).

1. Heat the oven to 200°C and lightly grease the
cups of a muffin tin.
2. In a large mixing bowl, mix together the mashed
potatoes, the eggs, cheese and spring onions/
chives. Season the mixture according to how
seasoned your leftover mashed potatoes were.
3. Line each cup of the muffin pan with a slice of
bacon. Drop a spoonful of potato mixture in
each muffin cup. Sprinkle the tops with the
remaining grated cheese for a lovely golden
crispy top.
4. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the potato cups
are set. You can tell they are ready when they
have browned on top. Let them cool for about
5 minutes in the muffin pan, then gently use
a spoon or knife to release them from the pan.
Serve warm with dollops of sour cream.
Here’s a recipe for creamy and cheesy bite
sized mashed potato puffs that make a
quick breakfast side or appetiser.

Food styling and photography
Food and product styling became a passion by accident while
I was on break from my long-time career in advertising. In
the last five years, my experience in styling food and products
has taught me valuable, insightful and exciting lessons on
preparing, conceptualising and styling food and products for
the camera lens. Being married to a commercial photographer
has also allowed me to have both an awesome mentor and
my harshest critic. I have in the course of these 5 years
developed my own unique style that I use and adapt according
to my client’s requirements and needs.
Below is a list of tips and tricks for basic food styling that I
have found most useful when doing commercial, editorial or
even personal styling of food and/or products.
1. Choosing your plates
• Size – The proportion of food to
plate is important. Unless you are
aiming for an artistic visual spectacle
in fine dining, the food served should
be in proportion to the plate. It should
neither appear too scant with a lot
of space around it, nor overcrowded,
which creates a messy composition.
For example, you should vary your
plate sizes according to the food you
are featuring, such as placing a little
entrée on a 6-inch dish, rather than
on a 12-inch dinner plate.
• Style – Have a classic selection of
white plates and bowls. White is a
neutral shade and will complement
the set up when the food is garnished.

In contrast, patterned plates will
complicate the composition and
distract the eye from the food. You
can also use plain, colored plates to
liven up the dishes without spoiling
the visual effect.
2. Capturing the essence
• Focus – While you may be
tempted to rely on pretty plates to
make the food look more appealing,
remember it is vital for the food itself
to look good. Always concentrate on
capturing the essence of the dish,
such as the tenderness of the roast
with its creamy gravy. Identify the
highlights of the dish and make every
effort to focus on these areas.
• Angle – Just as we have our
preferred angle when being
photographed, so does food. To find
its most photogenic angle, capture the
dish from multiple angles and camera
heights to figure out which camera
position best suits it.
• Timing – Set up for the shoot in
advance and capture food as soon as it
is plated when the dish is still moist and
fresh. When exposed to air, meats dry
out and salads wilt. To combat these
challenges, brush the cooking juices
over the meat; rinse the vegetables in
cold water and apply the dressing with
a diffuser to keep the salad light and
crisp. The shorter the wait time before
taking a shot, the higher the chance of
capturing the food at its best.
• So, get the camera ready in the
angle you think is suitable and quickly
execute the shot as soon as the food
is ready!
3. Setting the mood
Plan ahead of time how you want each
dish to be presented. What is the
overall mood you wish to convey?
• Choice of colours – You can
achieve warm or cool tones for the
image through the choice of colours.
Decide on what you prefer before the
photography session and then choose
your plates, cutlery, background, and
any other additional props. A cool blue
tone will create a calm, harmonised
image while warm colours such
as red and coral are vibrant and
eye-catching.
• Choice of materials – Different
props and materials for the
background can determine and
enhance the mood of the overall setup with their textures. For example,
a wooden table would be suitable for
a nature theme, while a silky fabric
would lend a soft feel to the shot.
Classic, polished cutlery will give the
dish a contemporary mood while an
aged embossed set will make it look
more rustic.
• Choice of props – Two rules of
thumb here: balance and creativity.
Do not clutter your shot with too
many props (this can muddle up your
picture!) and avoid burning a hole
in your pocket with expensive ones.
Consider what you already have
