SOUTH EAST HANTS GROUP HAMPSHIRE AREA www.sehantsramblers.hampshire.uk WALKS & EVENTS PROGRAMME JULY - OCTOBER 2014 Note: No edition of Footprints this time. Please note the extended entry re the visit of the London Blind Ramblers on page 4 and the request for volunteers for Footpath work on page 19. Programmes are free to members of the South East Hants Group. When you renew your subscription please indicate your membership of SE Hants Group. The Programme is available to other (non-SEH) members at a cost of £2 (cheque) + 3 s.a.e. per year. Any person wishing to join the Group is most welcome. You can obtain one free programme to sample up to three of our walks without joining the Ramblers, but if you decide to walk regularly with us, we would expect you to join the Ramblers, which you can do via the website: www.ramblers.org.uk or our membership secretary. For Programme or joining, contact the Membership Secretary, Margaret Davies on 023 9226 5062. Over 20% of our members have now signed up to receive walks programmes and Footprints by email, which will save the group about £140 per year on postage and printing. If anyone else would like to consider receiving material by email, please contact David Nixon ([email protected]) for an information sheet and a trial electronic mailing. Welcome to new members of the Group We are delighted to welcome new members to the group. If you are new to the Ramblers, you may have some concerns about going on your first walk. You may not know how to find the start point for the walk, or feel confident about your ability to keep up, or wonder how welcoming and friendly the established members of the group will be. Most of our leaders have several years’ experience in the role, so if you have any concerns, your first step should be to phone the leader to discuss the walk with him or her. The leader will be able to explain in detail what the walk will involve, how long it is expected to take, the type of terrain involved etc. He/she may be able to arrange for you to get a lift to the walk with someone who lives near you. Contacting the leader does not mean that you must commit to go on the walk, it just puts you in a better position to decide if a particular walk is suitable for you. Many people find that after a few walks they meet people with whom they can share lifts to walks on a regular basis. The important thing is to start getting involved and enjoy the wonderful countryside we have in our area. 1 NOTES and GUIDANCE to WALKERS What to bring Food and drink, wear stout footwear and carry waterproof clothing in case of wet weather. If possible, bring a first aid kit and a mobile phone. Particularly in winter when conditions underfoot can be treacherous, walkers are recommended to carry a survival bag. Such bags can be bought at Millets or Cotswolds for about £4 each. Start points for walks Indicated by a six-figure grid reference, with a 2 letter prefix. Car sharing to walks It is Group policy to promote car-sharing as much as possible, primarily for environmental reasons, but also to enable people who do not drive to join our walks. Drivers often appreciate it when a voluntary contribution is made by passengers and as a guide, 7p per mile per passenger is considered a reasonable amount to cover the costs incurred by the driver. Building on the positive experience of the increasingly-popular Thursday walks, all leaders are invited to add ‘Phone leader to arrange lift’ at the end of their walk details. You will see that this appears in the current programme for walks led by Committee members, as well as some others. It is not anticipated that this will generate a large number of extra calls to leaders, because many of our regular walkers are already involved in their own informal car-sharing groups. We hope that leaders will be able to put people in contact with existing carsharers. Please note that not all leaders will be able to operate in this way, and a lift cannot always be guaranteed, but collectively we will do our best. No walk arranged Where this is shown in the programme, it may be that a walk will be organized at short notice, and if so, the leader should provide the Programme Secretary with the details and walkers should check with him nearer the time. Cancellation of walks If the weather (or forecast) is very bad, or if any doubt exists whether the walk will take place, it is the responsibility of the walker to contact the leader to check if the walk is still on. Safety and leaders authority Leaders do their best to ensure safe walks, but those taking part do so at their own risk. Please adhere to the leader’s instructions, especially on busy roads and observe the Country Code at all times. Please do not walk ahead of the leader & tell the leader or back-marker if you intend to drop behind the main group. 2 Emergency Card Ramblers’ advice is that leaders should take a register of all those who attend each walk, including emergency telephone numbers and details of medical conditions, but we considered this to be impractical and unduly intrusive. We would however, like each walker to carry an emergency card in a side pocket of their rucksack that gives their name, telephone number of who to contact in an emergency, any relevant medical information, e.g. medication carried and how to administer it, allergies, if you suffer from diabetes etc, and what action we should undertake to help you if you become unconscious. We hope of course, that the information will never be needed, but it could be vital. Another recommendation is to put an ICE (In Case of Emergency) entry on your mobile phone. Put ICE as the contact name, then the number to contact, i.e. ICE1, ICE2 etc if there are alternatives. Apparently paramedics look for ICE entries on the mobile phones of people they are called to, who are unable to communicate with them. Dogs Dogs are allowed unless otherwise stated, but they must be kept under strict control. If this is not complied with, owners will be asked not to bring the dog on future walks. Walks grading The purpose of the grade in the walk description is to assist members to select appropriate walks for their walking capability: Grade A: brisk pace Grade B: normal pace Grade C: leisurely pace Some grades are modified with a + or – sign, some are composite e.g. B/C. Note to walk leaders A back marker should be used for groups of 10+. Any footpath problem (where, when, what, etc) encountered on a walk should be reported to the Footpath Secretary, Peter Sollars (023 9259 5107) [email protected]. Leaders are recommended to carry survival bags, particularly in winter when conditions underfoot can be treacherous. Such bags can be purchased at Millets or Cotswolds for about £4 each. All leaders should report any incident or accident to the Group Secretary as soon as possible. 3 SPECIAL EVENTS JULY - OCTOBER 2014 The events below, which also appear in the main WALKS & EVENTS PROGRAMME, are listed and highlighted (with appropriate additional information) to serve as a general reminder to all members. In the first instance we will concentrate on clearing overgrown and blocked footpaths before moving on to stile repair and stile-to-kissing gate replacements. We are seeking volunteers who are prepared to become involved in this activity. If you are interested could you please send your name and Ramblers membership number to Val Vardon [email protected] We have to submit this information to Ramblers Central Office in order to be covered by Ramblers insurance. Will you also please provide your contact details – email address and/or telephone number. If you would like to discuss what will be involved in more detail please contact Margaret Mathieson [email protected] tel: 023 9226 7346 Once we are up and running we will contact volunteers to tell them about specific tasks that we are going to undertake. It is not expected that every volunteer will be able to turn up for every task, but if we establish a big enough pool of 19 volunteers that will not be necessary. Thanks in anticipation of a positive response from you.
