Session Proposal
Fall 2014
Dear colleagues,
French Notes
By now we are thoroughly immersed in our classes, new
schedules, and sorting through what used to work and what we will
need to invent so that it will work! We are learning to know new
colleagues and forming new relationships.

SCFLTA is only as strong and as active as its members. This
year we are making an effort to grow numerically as well as
professionally. We want people to be more than a name on a list;
we want them to be active participants and future leaders of the
organization. We want the AATs (AATSP, AATF, AATG), along with
the SC Classical Association to grow also in both ways.
My own goals are to continue growing the German program
at Blythewood High School, help to create a district-wide
partnership program with a school in a German-speaking country,
and to support the AATG-SC.
What are your goals? How can SCFLTA help you accomplish
them, and how can your participation with us assist you in
accomplishing them?
Sincerely,
Dr. Arthur Turfa

Fall 2014
I want to begin with a huge thank you to Josette Page
Sharwell and Jenny McGrady. Josette, as you may know, has
been our dedicated South Carolina AATF Administrator of Le
Grand Concours since 1985! She has worked tirelessly to
administer and to maintain the standards of the ever-evolving
contest for the last 29 years. Thank you Josette for all you
have done for our organization.
At this point, Josette has had to decide to pass the torch. I
was delighted to appoint Jenny McGrady, who volunteered to
serve as our new Administrator. Jenny is the curriculum
coordinator and French teacher at Christ Church Episcopal
School in Greenville. She and Josette are working together
closely to ensure that the transition will be a smooth one. For
all information about the contest please contact Jenny at:

Upcoming events include:
The third annual CinéCola, Columbia Community French and
st
Francophone Film Festival, will begin on October 21 , at
7PM, at the Columbia Museum of Art. This year’s opening
film is Québécoise director, Louise Archambault’s 2013
Gabrielle. The festival will include four additional films,
screened at the University of South Carolina campus in
Columbia and Columbia College. The final film, directors’,
Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar and Benjamin Renner,
animated feature, Ernest & Célestine, will be screened again
th
at the Columbia Museum of Art on Sunday, November 16 at
2PM. This film is based on the Belgian author-illustrator,
Gabrielle Vincent’s children’s books and is in many ways ideal
for our younger audiences.
Many Francophone and Francophile community partners
have once again come together to sponsor this communitywide event.
Please keep an eye out for the complete line-up of films,
which will be posted to our wikispace (http://aatfsouthcarolina.wikispaces.com/) and our facebook page.
While visiting our wikispace, please note that many
documents have been recently uploaded. For instance, you
th
will find notes and documents from the 87 AATF National
Convention, helpful articles for the promotion of French
(under “Why French Matters!”) and the current application
form for the “New Member Scholarship,” which I ask you to
share with French teachers who are not yet members of the
AATF and our chapter. I would like to remind you that our
social media sites are an excellent way to share our ideas and
events. Please continue to send us updates so that we can
post them.
Thank you for all of your continued support and passion for
the French language and the Francophone cultures that you
bring to the students, parents and administrators of South
Carolina.
I look forward to seeing you at the workshop in November.
A très bientôt.
Bien cordialement.

Thank you, Jenny, for accepting to take on this very
demanding administrative duty.
In accordance with the SC AATF constitution, elections will be
held in the Spring of 2015. The positions of Vice-President
and Secretary-Treasurer will become vacant at this time.
Please consider nominating a South Carolinian French teacher
for one of these positions, or nominating yourself. The chair
of the nominating committee will send a call for nominations
by mid-January 2015. Be ready to respond! Serving as an
officer is not only a rewarding experience in and of itself, but
contributes to the overall dedication to French and its
promotion in our schools.
As mentioned in previous email exchanges, this year’s fall
workshop will be held on Saturday, November 1, at Columbia
College (Breed Leadership Center, room 305) in Columbia, SC.
We will be beginning at 8am, with registration and coffee,
and ending just after lunch at 2 pm. The workshop is
composed of two interactive morning sessions, followed by
our chapter business meeting from 11:00 – 11:50AM, at
which point we will be going to Crêpes et Croissants on
Sumter Street in downtown Columbia for a savory lunch!
Please see the agenda and registration form included in this
edition of The Cresent Newsletter. Venez nombreuses et

state. Besides USC and PC, many other
colleges and universities have also become
regular participants.
Bob Jones University (BJU) has
competed since 2011 with a great variety of
programs directed by Professor Ying Leach
and her husband, Dan, who is a professional
musician. They helped students in her
Chinese classes explore various topics and
ideas through in-class projects,
presentations, and papers. They also
exposed students to authentic Chinese
traditional folk music, operas, and poems,
both within and outside the classroom. A
major part of their preparation involved
dress rehearsals at the Leaches’ home,
including Chinese refreshments that
featured traditional Chinese foods such as
Yuanxiao (sweet sesame rice balls). In
2012, Anna Cadavos, a senior Chinese
language student at BJU, won the grand
prize of “Palmetto Star” attaining the
highest scores in both of the contest
categories: language proficiency and
Chinese culture. She competed against
thirty-two contestants from colleges and
universities around the state.
This past spring marked the fourth
time BJU students participated in the
Palmetto Chinese Star Competition. In this
year’s competition all of the BJU
contestants placed. But just as importantly,
they were exposed to valued opportunities
to meet native Chinese speakers and
experience authentic Chinese culture, as
well as to establish relationships with
college peers from other schools who
shared their same interests. As Dr. Liu, the
director of PCCI, said, “It is like a talent
show, but you need to show your
proficiency (in Chinese)” (Presbyterian
College Magazine, 2010). Most of all, the
event has provided a stage for building
A bridge from the Chinese Classroom to the
World:
Palmetto Chinese Star Language and
Culture Contest
Ying Leach
Bob Jones University
In 2002 the Chinese National Office
for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language
(Hanban) in Beijing, China, began the
“Chinese Bridge” language proficiency
competition for non-Chinese college
students. “Nearly 400,000 college students
worldwide have participated in the
preliminary contests, among whom over
1,300 students from more than 90 countries
have been invited to China for the semifinals and finals,” according to the data
from the Hanban official website (Hanban,
2014). Thus, the contest has become an
attractive stage for both teachers and
students from all over the world.
In 2010, the newly established
Confucius Institutes (CI) sponsored by
Hanban at the University of South Carolina
and Presbyterian College hosted the first
preliminary contest in the state of South
Carolina. Called the Palmetto Chinese Star
Competition the contest has the goal of
promoting Chinese language proficiency
and cultural awareness. CIs at both USC and
PC sponsor the winner of the Palmetto
Chinese Star at the regional competition in
Washington D. C. on behalf the state of
South Carolina. The regional winner earns a
two-month trip to Beijing for the semi-finals
and finals. Finally, the winner of the finals
receives the grand prize of a scholarship to
study in China. As the deputy director of the
Presbyterian College CI, Dr. Kejian Jin, had
predicted, the annual event soon became
popular among institutions around the
bridges from the Chinese classroom to the
world.
