A Word From Our Sr. Associate Vice President
Information & Reminders
We’re finally into October and the heat and humidity is starting to come
back down to more comfortable levels – it’s also my birthday month, so I
like it even more. We’re also well into the middle of the fall semester, so
everyone is back into the groove. The campus continues to work and look
very nice thanks to the efforts of all of you.
The vast majority of you should have seen a small (1.5%) increase in your
salary recently – starting with the October 3rd payment. Most everyone
who has been performing satisfactorily and has been on the payroll since
June 30, 2014, should have gotten it. If you think you should have
received it and do not see it in your gross pay, you can check with our Human Resources Office to see
if there is a problem.
We’re also working on a merit based pay program, where most of you who were on the payroll as of
January 1, 2014, and have received at least an above satisfactory performance review would be
eligible for a reward from the merit pool. The total amount of funding amounts to 1.5% of salary.
These allocations will vary, and will be based more on performance. These increases will take effect
the pay period starting on November 7th, and will be in the payment received on Wednesday November
26th (two days early because of the Thanksgiving Holiday!).
Both of these increases are to base salary and are not one-time bonuses. That’s good!
The FSU Board of Trustees have selected FSU alumnus John Thrasher to be our next President. This
selection must be approved by the Board of Governors next month, but there is no reason to believe
that President-elect Thrasher’s selection will not be ratified. Mr. Thrasher is a two-time graduate of
FSU, and he has been an avid long time supporter and advocate of FSU.
Any time there is a change at the top of an organization, there are other changes that normally occur.
We’ll have to get some time with the new President to see what might change from our perspective,
but there is nothing in the wind that I’ve heard about. The good news is that we’re able to adapt and
do whatever it is we’re called upon to do. In the meantime, just keep doing what you do as you’ve been
doing it.
Thanks for all you do for FSU!

Safety First - Safe Driving
Nearly all of the sensory input needed to drive comes from visual cues. If your vision is impaired, so is your ability to drive safely. The faster
you travel, the less time you have to see things and react to them. Poor distance vision and excessive speed can have disastrous results.
How Different Vision Issues Can Affect Your Driving
Distance Vision: Good distance vision allows you to see down the road and gives you time to adjust more gradually to your speed or change
lanes. The sooner you can identify a potential hazard, the sooner you can react to it.
Peripheral Vision: The ability to see to both sides is important. Even with mirrors positioned properly, vehicles have blind spots, and reduced
peripheral vision can extend them.
Near-Vision Focusing: When looking from the road to dashboard and back again, the ability to change focus from far to near is important. A
problem in this area could slow your reaction time to potential hazards.
Night Vision: You need to be able to see in low and variable light conditions and recover quickly from the glare of oncoming headlights.
Color Vision: Drivers must instantly recognize traffic lights, indicator signs, hazard warning signs, etc. A color vision defect may delay a
driver’s reaction time.
Depth Perception: Poor depth perception can have an effect on parking, judging following distances, and stopping at intersections.

United Way Campaign
Facilities Colleagues,
Amazingly, it is Fall and time to kick-off this year’s United Way Campaign.
For those new to Facilities, you should know that every year the University commits to supporting our community with an organized
effort to ensure that many of the charitable services in our area have the resources necessary to continue their programs. Each FSU
department designates a coordinator to oversee their effort, raise awareness, and perform the administrative functions needed to
make the campaign successful. For the last several years I have been honored to serve as the Facilities coordinator. Each year I
have felt blessed to have been able to learn and share in this campaign with you. As a team, our support of United Way has been
strong--leading the way for Finance and Administration. Having worked with many of you for a long time, I believe this year will be the
same.
I will be sending out and collecting pledge forms, talking and writing to you about WHY United Way is important, and maybe trying a
few new and fun things to make giving a little different this year.
So, stay tuned. The campaign will run from October 1 thru December 16.
Sincerely,
Kim

Environmental Health & Safety— Equipment Breakdown Insurance… Yes we have coverage!
You just discovered a major water leak causing damage to a building. FSU has an insurance policy that may address this type of
damage. Boiler and Machinery (B&M) Insurance covers losses or damage caused by the rupture, bursting or operation of pressure
relief devices. Vessels covered include condensate return tanks, cushion or expansion tanks used with a hot water heating boiler, or
any machine. Damage or loss to any boiler, fired vessel, unfired vessel normally subject to vacuum or internal pressure other than the
weight of its contents; refrigerating and air condition vessels (and any metal piping and its accompanying equipment); mechanical or
electrical machine or apparatus used for the generation, transmission or utilization of mechanical or electrical power; and apparatus
that is used for medical, diagnostic, surgical, dental, or pathological research.
The B&M Policy is a commercial coverage provided by a private insurance carrier. It is complimentary to FSU’s Self Insurance Property
Policy that covers perils such as fire, lightning, explosion, and flood. Claims for both Property and B&M are administered by EH&S. If
you have knowledge of a loss involving a University owned building or have any questions concerning this coverage contact Amanda
Boor in our Environmental Health and Safety office at 645-7736 ([email protected]).
