Believe the Word of God-Mark 16:16. 3. Repent of sins- Acts 17:30-31. 4. Confess Christ- Romans 10:9-10. 5. Be Baptized to wash away sins -Acts 22:16; 1 Peter 3:20-21; Mark 16:16. 6. Live a Faithful Life- Revelation 2:10 Seek First to Understand...Be Swift to Hear! In Stephen Covey’s landmark book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, he sets forth principles that are life changing. They are expected to be, as they are Biblical principles. The one that made the greatest impact upon me, and maybe because I so greatly needed to implement it, is what he calls Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. I see the Biblical equivalent as “So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1:19). Do you have a habit of thinking about what you want to say next rather then intently listening to another? Do you have a habit of automatically knowing the right counsel to give a person based on your own experiences and not his? Do you wonder why people will not open up to you with their problems? Communication is vital to relationships. In order for a person to communicate his feelings with another, there needs to be a level of trust, and that level of trust depends upon the nature of the feelings. Some feelings require a deep level of trust to be communicated, and others, not so much. In the body of Jesus, we are to help one another with struggles (e.g. Gal. 6:2; James 5:16).We should trust one another enough to share our struggles, but lack of trust keeps people from sharing. Trust is earned when you demonstrate you truly care about another. The best way to demonstrate that is to truly listen to another. Seek first to understand that person’s situation and feelings. Be swift to hear that person, and slow to speak your thoughts. Let the person truly know you are interested in his well being. Too many times people are quick to judge a person’s situation and have all of the answers before they actually know the other’s true feelings and experiences. Love does not behave this way (1 Cor. 13). I challenge you to take “the dinner table test.” When around a group of people talking, sit back and observe. Count the number of times someone begins to speak and is interrupted by another before finishing. You may be surprised. If we are going to effectively communicate within the body of Jesus, we need to learn to truly listen, to seek first to understand, to be quick to hear, and slow to speak. This requires discipline, but it will enrich our relationships, help us to develop new meaningful relationships, and most importantly, strengthen the body of Jesus. ---By Trent Childers
