Barrett Hospital and HealthCare Expands
General Surgical Services
Dr. John Pickens has assumed duties at Barrett
Hospital and HealthCare, and will be performing
general surgery. His services will be in addition to
the surgical coverage and services provided by Dr.
Shafi Shafaieh, who has operated his independent
practice in Dillon for more than 30 years.
In September, Dr. John Pickens began seeing patients in the clinic and is scheduling appointments
for surgery. He will provide general surgical services including hernia repair, gall bladder surgery,
breast surgery, colon surgery and wound care. Dr.
Pickens will also be on call, and will be available
for weekend emergency surgeries and monitoring
patients in the hospital. He is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Medicine, and was
residency trained at the University of New Mexico.
He has been a board-certified surgeon since 2004
and has practiced in Butte and in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He has held visiting privileges at Barrett
Hospital and HealthCare in the past, and is very familiar with many of our physicians.
The availability of two general surgeons will allow for more surgeries to be performed and follow-up coverage and care will be available as a result of scheduling and coordination between
the doctors. Patients will be able to undergo surgery and be admitted into the hospital and closely
monitored by one of the doctors. In the past, having one surgeon available might mean cases
were sent elsewhere if follow-up care was not going to be available.
With expanded service patients may have less need to travel and it will be easier to schedule procedures.
For more information, please call Barrett Hospital and HealthCare Clinic (406) 683-1188.
Barrett Hospital Foundation Awards the 2014
Dr. Ron Loge Medical Scholarships
Members of the Barrett Hospital Foundation Board awarded two-scholarships to currently enrolled medical school students who are graduates of Beaverhead High School
or Twin Bridges High School.
The scholarship program began more than 10 years ago under the guidance of Dr. Ron
Loge, who recognized that local students pursuing a career as a physician did not have
a specific local scholarship program available to them.
Dr. Ron Loge and Charlene were the first contributors to the scholarship program, and
sought support from the other physicians. Ultimately, the program grew and became
highly successful with the support of a
patient and friend of Dr. Loge’s, who has made generous annual gifts to the Foundation.
The scholarship fund has grown to more than $200,000 and it is endowed – meaning
scholarships are awarded annually based on the earnings.
The 2014 recipients are Paula Jean Babb and Jennifer Coleman Emery. They are first
time applicants and they split $8,737. Babb is a 1st year medical student at Western
University of Health Sciences and Emery is entering her 2nd year in medical school at
Oregon Health Science University.
Barrett Hospital & HealthCare Purchases
UV Sanitizing System
Infection prevention in healthcare settings requires
a sustained and multi-faceted effort. Barrett Hospital & HealthCare continuously monitors patient
care practices for adherence to standards, conducts
extensive staff training and uses proven cleaning
and disinfection techniques and equipment to ensure safety and reduce the risk of infection to patients.
As a result, the hospital maintains an extremely
low incident rate of post-surgical site and medical
device-related infections, a measure that is used
nationally to evaluate patient safety and quality of
care. While patient care practices such as hand hygiene with soap and water or alcohol-based hand
rubs are considered to be the most effective way to
prevent transmission of infections in the healthcare
setting, proper cleaning and disinfection are critical as well.
In addition to traditional cleaning and chemical disinfection techniques, the hospital recently purchased a “Clorox Optimum-UV ” sanitizing system that is portable, and uses
ultraviolet light to kill microorganisms like bacteria and viruses by inactivating their
DNA. Once a room is cleaned, the unit is placed in that room to release shortwavelength ultraviolet radiation that kills even some of the most dangerous pathogens
like MRSA and C. difficile. In order to effectively sanitize a room and avoid shadowing,
the unit is moved to change the direction of the light and access additional areas.
The UV device is used as a supplement, not a replacement, to standard cleaning and disinfection protocols. It does not generate any harmful by-products, nor does it leave behind any residual substances. A faint “clean air” smell may be detected in the room after
the disinfection cycle. Barrett Hospital & HealthCare is committed to preventing
healthcare-associated infections and adding this technology enables the hospital to further eliminate risks to patients.

Annual Foundation Donor Appreciation Event Held at
Birch Creek Center
Donors to Barrett Hospital
Foundation gathered on August
24th at the Birch Creek
Conference Center for the annual
donor appreciation event.
Approximately 70 people enjoyed
dinner and entertainment provided
by the Todd Kesner, Director of
the Montana 4-H Center for Youth
Development and his children
Lauren and Sam. Todd gave a brief
presentation of the “Western Heritage Project” and Lauren and Sam
demonstrated their knowledge of
traditional clothing of the west and their proficiency with single action revolvers,
repeating rifles and a double-barreled shotgun.
In 2013/2014 donors contributed more
than $400,000 to the Hospital
Foundation in support of the capital
campaign, scholarships for medical
students and hospital staff and the
purchase of new equipment.
Through the generosity of our donors,
the Foundation is able to advance
healthcare philanthropy and support the
hospital’s various programs and
initiatives to serve our community.
Local Sculptor Honors Dr. Ron Loge
Ed McDaniel started making sculptures 12
years ago at the age of 48, carving clay that
would be used to create a wax mold and ultimately a bronze casting. His work primarily
focused on creating traditional busts, and he
did some smaller pieces as well.
When he experienced a serious health crisis
from an auto-immune complication and pneumonia, he found himself in the emergency
room and being admitted to the hospital under
the watchful eye of Dr. Ron Loge. Ed speaks in
a hushed tone when he describes that experience, “I say without a doubt that Dr. Ron Loge
saved my life. I wanted to thank him, and express my gratitude – and the best way for me to
do that is through my work.”
Ed first approached Dr. Anna Loge, who is Ron’s daughter and an internal medicine doctor at Barrett
Hospital & HealthCare. He then pursued the idea with the Foundation.
When Dr. Ron Loge was asked if he would sit for photos and the creation of a bronze, he was reluctant
to be part of a traditional bust casting, and instead asked if the piece could reflect him, his beloved English Setter “Huck”, a shotgun and some pheasants. Ed said he could do that, and the project began in the
spring of 2013.
Dr. Loge sat for photographs, and Ed even went to the Pheasants Forever Youth Hunt to take pictures of
Dr. Loge, some pheasants and Huck on point.
Northwest Art Castings of Bozeman cast the sculpture and prepared it to be mounted in its final form.
Ed McDaniel donated his time and effort to carve the clay and create the table on which it will be
mounted. The casting cost was paid for by an ad-hoc group of “Friends of Dr. Ron Loge” which included:
Jim & Jean MacAleer - $1,500
Anonymous - $500
Lawrence and Jen Morrisroe - $200
Ron and Valerie Fick - $200
Jim and Heidi Gleason - $200
Marie and George Holt - $100
Mary Jo O’Rourke and George Johnson - $100
Ken and Melissa Westman - $50
The pieces of the sculpture are being assembled, and when it is complete it will be displayed at the Barrett Hospital and HealthCare as a tribute to Dr. Loge and the service he provides to our community.
George and Donna Fryett Help Purchase
“BioFire” Analyzer for the Lab
When a patient has an infection, doctors use
their knowledge of microorganisms to
prescribe the correct antibiotic for the type of
bacteria most likely causing the patient’s
infection. Doctors use laboratory services to
confirm their suspicions about the type of
bacteria as well as whether the antibiotic they
prescribed is effective in killing the
bacteria. Traditionally this process can take up
to 3 days to provide confirmation.
Barrett Hospital and HealthCare recently
purchased “BioFire” which is a state-of-the-art
analyzer that can identify up to 23 different
types of gastrointestinal infections in as little
as an hour. The machine can also utilize a
respiratory panel and a blood panel, to identify
harmful bacteria in a similar timeframe. This
will allow patients who are being seen in the
clinic, emergency department or hospital to receive a rapid diagnosis.
George & Donna Fryett
According to Dr. John Madany, a family practitioner, “This is something we can use all the
time. It will speed things up, and we can tell the patient specifically what they have and
quickly decide on a course of action. For so many patients, knowledge is both peace of mind
and empowering.”
George and Donna Fryett contributed $20,000
of the $40,000 needed to purchase this
machine. The Foundation will continue to
seek additional sources of support to cover the
cost of this important tool.
