Weekly Stewardship Reflection
Oct. 18/19, 2014 – Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel we hear proclaimed a profound teaching by
Jesus on stewardship. What belongs to Caesar? What belongs
to God? Christian stewards recognize that everything they have
belongs to God. God created them, and God has claims on
every part of their existence. They also realize that the sovereign is an institution whose nature and purpose is to promote
the common good and protect the welfare of its citizenry. As
long as it accomplishes this mission while treating every single
person with deep respect, justice and compassion, it merits the
steward’s support and cooperation. Christian stewards know
what belongs to the Lord, and they are better citizens when
they live their lives according to His Gospel.

Dear Mary Immaculate and
St. Rose Parishioners,
As we continue the Catholic Stewardship Appeal (CSA)
for our parish and diocese, please respond to my letter
and that of Bishop Gaydos at your earliest convenience to indicate your stewardship commit for the
coming year in support of the ministries of our parish
and the Diocese of Jefferson City. Letters were mailed
to all registered parish households. If you did not receive
either letter, please contact the parish office. Thanks for
your support!
As part of our Stewardship Renewal, we are asked to
offer our talents and time to our parish through our
many ministries and activities. In the mailing sent to
each registered household, a Time and Talent Form was
included. We will have an opportunity at the Masses
next weekend to fill out the form, or you can use the
one you received in the mail. Please consider how you
are being called to share your time and talent with your
parish family, in the same ways as in the past or perhaps
in a new way or ways. If you haven’t offered to be involved before, please consider doing so this year. A special need that we have at this time are parishioners
with particular skills - carpentry, plumbing, etc. and
those who would be willing to be called on for a special cleaning project or other maintenance projects.
As announced earlier this Fall, a new keyboard was donated to Mary Immaculate Church. Several have asked
about the availability of the “old” keyboard. Rather
than putting it on a public sales service, I would prefer
parishioners have the opportunity to have it. If you are
interested, please make a “silent bid” - let me know the
amount you would give for it. I’ll wait until October 31 and
then give it to the highest bidder.
SNOW REMOVAL—Mary Immaculate Parish is accepting bids for snow removal. Areas needing removal
include the sidewalk from the corner of Washington and
New Streets to just east of the parish center heading east
and just past the one car garage heading south on New
Street, the steps in front of the church and all concreted
areas in front of the school, the steps to the parish center, the sidewalk in front of the rectory at the corner of
Washington and Lewis Streets, and the ramp leading to
the entrance to the west side of church. It does not include the playground/parking lot behind the school or the
rectory driveway, as those areas are cleared with a mobile remover. All areas around school must be cleared by
7:15 am on school days and around the church on Saturday afternoons by 4:30 and Sunday mornings by 8:30. If
snow falls during a school day, the areas affecting school
must be kept clear. The parish owns a snow blower which
would be available. Please contact Fr. Chris if you would
like to submit a bid or need further information. Bids need
to be received by October 24.
Principal needed for Fr. McCartan Elementary School
(Pre K-8) in Marceline Missouri, a faith community with 76
students and 6 faculty. Applicants must be practicing
Catholics with at least three years of successful teaching,
preferably in a Catholic elementary school. Requirements include a master's degree and principal's certification or working toward it. For information, contact Fr.
Jerry Kaimann at 660.376.3239 or [email protected]
Wishing you many blessings this week,
Fr. Chris
From the Question Box
Q. Could we have a certain hour of the week set
up so that the priest will sit in the confessional
and wait until a person anonymously walks in to
confess? I really must confess these sins but it’s so hard to
do so. Thank you for reading.
A. We offer this from 4:30-5 pm on Saturday evenings. If this
doesn’t work, you can call the parish office and arrange with
me for a time for confession. Since it’s important to you to
have anonymity, we could arrange that I would arrive in
church a few minutes before you do so I won’t see you. As
to an additional time during the week, this is more complicated than it might seem. My weekly schedule is pretty irregular as I schedule meetings, individual appointments, out
of town meetings, and occasional open time, so it would be
difficult to commit to a designated time each week. I do
schedule additional times during the seasons of Advent and
Lent and, again, would be happy to work something out with
you if the Saturday evening time can’t work for you.

STEWARDSHIP: TIME TALENT & TREASURE reflection
Q: What can you do with 1820 quarters?
A: Help 13 starving children stay alive!
Supporting Project Peanut Butter is a universal outreach
of charity & prayer for children in our PSR program, ages
4 years through 8th grade. In one year's time they have
"earned" $455 (= 1820 quarters) by remembering to wear
their purple CHRIST TODAY t-shirts and dropping a quarter in our special fishbowl. We are prayerfully recruiting
more donors of loose quarters or a roll of quarters
too all throughout the year.
Find out more about Washington Univ. Pediatrician Dr.
Mark Manary's dream to save severely malnourished children and employ parents as well. We have the privilege of
supporting this unique ministry in our own "little way of
love" as St. Therese Lisieux suggests. Lots of educational
information and a wonderful 10 minute video appears
on the website: www.projectpeanutbutter.org. Thanks
for joining us in prayer and for any quarter donations.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
When the fathers of the Second Vatican Council met to discuss the sacrament of penance, they were required to draw
up a new rite, including several forms. The hot button for
debate was so-called “general absolution,” by which a penitent could be absolved of sin without confessing to a priest.
This was a difficult debate, compounded by widely varying
traditions in both East and West. Some were surprised to
learn that the Holy See had already given permission, during
the First and Second World Wars, for this form. In 1944
Bible Study

the Vatican issued a decree saying this form was valid under
extreme conditions, which bishops in mission lands and Latin
America took as a kind of “blanket permission.”
Thus, the fathers of the Council were alarmed to find this
practice fairly widespread, not only in war, but in peaceful
places with huge numbers of faithful and few priests. Al-

though they eventually produced a ritual with three different forms, the forms are not considered equal, and the enriched and revised individual form is preferred. The enrichments include a welcome of the penitent, a sign of the cross
with an encouragement to trust in God’s compassion, new
texts rich in the Word of God, praise for God’s mercy, and a
dismissal.

October Prayer of the Month
The Peace Prayer of St. Francis is a well
known and loved prayer that is associated with
St. Francis but was not composed by him. It
captures the spirit of St. Francis and asks for
the grace to be an instrument of Christ’s peace.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
