About The Institution of Engineers (India)
The Institution of Engineers (India) or IEI is the largest multidisciplinary professional body
that encompasses 15 engineering disciplines and gives engineers a global platform from
which to share professional interest. IEI has membership strength of nearly 0.7 million.
Established in 1920, with its headquarters at 8 Gokhale Road, Kolkata 700020, IEI has
served the engineering fraternity for over nine decades. In this period of time it has been
inextricably linked with the history of modern-day engineering.
In 1935, IEI was incorporated by Royal Charter and remains the only professional body in
India to be accorded this honour. Today, its quest for professional excellence has given it a
place of pride in almost every prestigious and relevant organization across the globe. IEI
functions among professional engineers, academicians and research workers. It provides a
vast array of technical, professional and supporting services to the Government, Industries,
Academia and the Engineering fraternity, operating from over 104 centres located across
the country. The Institution has established R&D centres at various locations in the country
and also provides grant-in-aid to its members to conduct research and development on
engineering subjects.
IEI conducts Section A & B Examination in different Engineering disciplines, the
successful copmliction of which is recognized as equivalent to Degree in appropriate field
of Engineering of recognized Universities of India by the Ministry of Human Resources
Development, Govt. of India. Every year as many as 90000 candidates appear for these
exams. For details , please see : www.ieindia.org
About Maharashtra State Centre:
The Maharashtra State Centre, of the Institution was founded in September1921 (as
Bombay Association) just a few months after the formal inauguration of the Institution on
23rd February 1921. In 1943, the Bombay Engineering Congress was amalgamated with
the then Bombay Centre. In 1976 with the realignment of the Institutions Centres on the
basis of the state boundaries, jurisdiction of Bombay Centre was extended to encompass the
whole of Maharashtra State. The Centre's name was changed from Bombay Centre to
Maharashtra State Centre. Currently, Maharashtra State has 10 Local Centres viz.
Ahmednagar, Amravati, Aurangabad, Belapur, Chandrapur, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Nashik,
Pune and Solapur. IEI, Maharashtra State Centre has the highest membership strength. The
total Corporate and Non Corporate membership strength of the Centre as on 31.03.2013 is
1,01,822.
About the Seminar :
India, with 1.27 billion people is the second most populous country in the world, while
China is on the top with over 1.36 billion people. India is all set to take the numero uno
position by 2030 and is predicted to have more than 1.53 billion people with growth rate at
1.58%. More than 50% of India's current population is below the age of 25 and over 65%
below the age of 35. About 72.2% of the population lives in some 638,000 villages and the
rest 27.8% in about 5480 towns and urban agglomerations.
Migration of People:
One important facet of study on population is the study of migration arising out of various
social, economic or political reasons. For a large country like India, the study of movement
of population in different parts of the country is complex issue. Economic development, in
the country, especially when many states are undergoing faster economic development,
particularly in areas, such as, manufacturing, information technology or service sectors,
data migration profile of population has become more important.
Migration may be due to marriage, which is the most common reason for migration among
females or for work in case of males. It also happens that many return to their place of birth
after staying out. There have been intra-state, interstate and out side of the country migrants.
Migration from rural India to cities has been growing in the last of couple decades for
education and employment. Many farmers practising dry farming had to migrate to urban
areas for employment and livelihood. These people live in temporary sheds without basic
facilities. Slum population in Mumbai accounts to about 55% of the Mumbai's population.
Slum Population in Delhi has the second largest slum Population in India. Nearly 1.8
million people lives in slum areas in capital of India - New Delhi. These people are mostly
unemployed or daily wage workers who cannot even afford basic necessities of life. We
need to change the present scenario and make our cities a healthy place to live-in.
Theme: Sustainable Urban Development:
The cities, both developed and developing, are under constant strain and stress to pull out
their resources. However the pressure is increasing day by day on all civic amenities. The
planning done by Corporations/Councils is going haywire due to unpredictable growth of
population. It is time that we are better prepared for our future growing needs in terms of
housing large number population, providing them with potable drinking water, sanitation,
solid waste management, transportation, education, employment, health and recreational
facilities, energy etc.
Sub-Themes:
Infrastructure and Rapid Transport System
Environment Friendly Housing
Water Supply and Sanitation
Solid Waste Management
Industries and Employment
Education and Health
Innovative Solutions
