About the Seminar : India, with 1.27 billion people is the second most populous country in the world, while China is on the top with over 1.36 billion people. India is all set to take the numero uno position by 2030 and is predicted to have more than 1.53 billion people with growth rate at 1.58%. More than 50% of India's current population is below the age of 25 and over 65% below the age of 35. About 72.2% of the population lives in some 638,000 villages and the rest 27.8% in about 5480 towns and urban agglomerations. Migration of People: One important facet of study on population is the study of migration arising out of various social, economic or political reasons. For a large country like India, the study of movement of population in different parts of the country is complex issue. Economic development, in the country, especially when many states are undergoing faster economic development, particularly in areas, such as, manufacturing, information technology or service sectors, data migration profile of population has become more important. Migration may be due to marriage, which is the most common reason for migration among females or for work in case of males. It also happens that many return to their place of birth after staying out. There have been intra-state, interstate and out side of the country migrants. Migration from rural India to cities has been growing in the last of couple decades for education and employment. Many farmers practising dry farming had to migrate to urban areas for employment and livelihood. These people live in temporary sheds without basic facilities. Slum population in Mumbai accounts to about 55% of the Mumbai's population. Slum Population in Delhi has the second largest slum Population in India. Nearly 1.8 million people lives in slum areas in capital of India - New Delhi. These people are mostly unemployed or daily wage workers who cannot even afford basic necessities of life. We need to change the present scenario and make our cities a healthy place to live-in. Theme: Sustainable Urban Development: The cities, both developed and developing, are under constant strain and stress to pull out their resources. However the pressure is increasing day by day on all civic amenities. The planning done by Corporations/Councils is going haywire due to unpredictable growth of population. It is time that we are better prepared for our future growing needs in terms of housing large number population, providing them with potable drinking water, sanitation, solid waste management, transportation, education, employment, health and recreational facilities, energy etc. Sub-Themes: Infrastructure and Rapid Transport System Environment Friendly Housing Water Supply and Sanitation Solid Waste Management Industries and Employment Education and Health Innovative Solutions CALL FOR PAPERS Technical papers are invited from participants.
