Dear Fellow Old Collegians
Welcome to the Winter Edition of The Gym. We have recently
celebrated the feasts of Pentecost and Trinity Sunday where we are
mindful of the gift of Gods Spirit and what this signifies for us. There
is a tendency to think of the Spirit as “A New Testament” thing. This,
however, overlooks the fact that during creation the Spirit is described
as hovering over the waters. It also overlooks the time God gifted the
Spirit to individuals to accomplish certain tasks.
I recently purchased “An Unsentimental Bloke” by Philip Butterss,
which is the life and work of old boy C J Dennis in which he wrote
the following: “I have never ceased to remember the good old CBC and the
great times I had there. What little success I have had lately is built on good,
solid foundations, laid in the old days at Wakefield St.”

A NOTE FROM THE

Dear Old Collegians,
As Term 2 draws to a close we again celebrate another exciting
Chapter in the history of this great school.
Shaun Clarke
Next week we say farewell to Deputy Principal and former CBC Old
Collegian Shaun Clarke who is on sabbatical for Term 3. Shaun is
undertaking leadership studies as well as retracing the steps of our
College Founder in Ireland and visiting the work of the Brothers’
Social Justice program in the United Nations in Geneva.
Sean Mangan
I am therefore pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Sean
Mangan as the Term 3 2014 replacement Deputy Principal. Dr Mangan
is a highly experienced educational leader currently employed as
Senior Education Advisor for Catholic Education SA. His previous
roles include SA Certificate of Education Implementation Officer and
Acting Principal/Deputy Principal at St Francis de Sales College. Dr
Mangan is married to Rachel with children Emma 3 and Edward 1.
The family are active members of the Brighton Catholic Parish. On
behalf of the College community we extend our blessings and best
wishes to Shaun Clarke and Sean Mangan.
Principal’s Diary
As part of my commitment to ensuring CBC enjoys world class
education I have continued my dialogue with Chancellors of
Universities nationally. This term I met with the Vice Chancellor
of Melbourne University Professor Glyn Davis and discussed a range
of issues including 21st Century teaching and learning, retention
rates for students studying in university and the pros and cons of the
International Baccalaureate program.
During the term break I am attending a gathering of Principals in the
US for a gathering of schools united under the International Boys
School Coalition network. The conference – Boys to Men – will draw
international speakers from across the globe to discuss boys’ education
best practice.

16 former CBC student Captains from 1945 through to 2014, gathered
to attend a special whole school assembly followed by lunch at the
Seven Stars Hotel.
Dr Glen McGuire (1945) College Captain spoke to students about
his memories of CBC and as a former medical Doctor to Olympians
reminded students about the dangers of smoking, drugs and alcohol.

1974 College Captain Mr Terry Roberts spoke of his long association
with the College as both a student and a teacher at CBC. Mr Roberts
is now regional Director of Edmund Rice Education Australia. He
reminded us of our call to be people of Gospel spirituality, liberating
education, inclusive community, justice and solidarity.

Christian Brothers College acknowledged as a leading
National School in Asian Literacy
Our College’s mission statement talks about ‘rising above the ordinary’
while promoting the ideal of ‘a just world’. Both of these aspirations
were recently recognised nationally.
CBC was acknowledged as a leading school in Asian Literacy at the
2014 Asia Education Foundation Conference in Sydney recently
attended by Shaun Clarke and me. The conference was attended by
over 250 educators nationally and transmitted globally via Twitter
feeds.

CBC was one of a few schools nationally to be used as a case study of
best practice at the Conference and was highlighted at the Conference
in the following manner:

CBC has undertaken a highly considered and strategic approach in
progressing their Asia Literacy moral purpose. A key success factor in the
college’s journey has been the establishment of the Asia Literacy Advisory
Group that includes both internal and external representatives. One of the
internal groups represented on the Advisory Group is comprised of students.

Community partners have injected energy into the college’s decision
making by offering non-traditional and creative ideas, as well as
providing a range of opportunities that would otherwise not have been
considered or accessed. Examples of this include the strong links to the
state’s Confucius Institute and its human resources, learning resources
and strategic contacts. Visits to the college by organisations such as the
Beijing Opera Company have added to the celebratory and inclusive
nature of the college’s engagement with Asian languages and culture,

while the hosting of overseas delegates has enhanced the
college’s reputation as a leader in this field.
we can tailor information to the staff television for staff
and the student television for students.
CBC is part of L21CS which is Australia’s foremost
professional learning program, supporting school leaders
to build Asia capabilities and drive change to support Asia
literacy.
The third Initiative will be the launch of a Parent Owned
Device program ensuring IT access and WiFi accessibility
for every student.
Information Technology at CBC
CBC is firmly entrenched in providing world class
cutting edge technology as part of our commitment to
contemporary 21st Century education. This term we
launched two new IT initiatives.
The first is that the College is currently trialing a
smartphone App which will provide up-to-date
co-curricular details and important school information.
Further information will be available early in Term 3
The second project is the launch of the PADS program
which allows us to share information around the school
electronically such as morning bulletins, sports notices,
etc. We have set up a television in the front office and
the staff room (senior campus). Both televisions will have
information showing throughout the day. In the program

Christian Brother News
Former CBC Principal Br Patrick Cronin cfc recently
visited the graves of two Christian Brothers with a deep
connection to CBC. Br Patrick writes:
The anniversaries of two of the Founders of CBC remind us
that we stand on the shoulders of giants. The two anniversaries
are: Francis De Sales Moran, who joined us from the Tennison
Woods-MacKillop Congregation of Brothers, and when that
folded De Sales joined us; and Sebastian O’Hagen on the
1st June. The account in Bap’s book is quite startling; as he
recounts Sebastian saying, hold off the funeral for De Sales
because tonight I die. He did, and the next day, a Sunday, the
Brothers and 2,000 people walked from the Cathedral to the
cemetery and buried them. One other of the pioneers Jeremiah
McEvilly died a few months previously. Let us pray for their
souls, and remember our own heroes, as we struggle with
current difficulties.
Conclusion:
On behalf of the College Board we thank all of our Old
Collegians who continue to support the College in so many
ways.
I particularly thank Mr Viano Jaksa for his outstanding
work as President of the Old Collegians Association
2004-2014. Viano’s signifcant contribution over a decade
was simply outstanding and we will miss his presence and
thank God for his wisdom, passion and deep devotion to
the College.

Eulogy by Jaycob Horvath Navarro
Before I start I would like to thank the Gujari family for being part
of our memorial celebration for Kamran. We respect that this is a
difficult and emotional time for you all and your family will continue
to be in our thoughts and hearts.
I would also like to thank the group of young men before me who
graduated alongside Kamran in 2012 of which I am too a part of. Boys,
I am so proud of every single one of you who has come for such an
important service tonight. And I am proud of us as CBC brothers. As
we stand here right now with purple ribbons pinned to our hearts, I’d
like to believe that Kamran is looking down at us and can see that in
some way, whether it be very small or very big, he touched all of our
lives. He was our classmate; he was our friend; he was, is, and forever
will be our brother.
It was just a mere year and a half ago when we
all graduated from our final year of schooling
and we were to pursue our shining future
prospects. Some of us foresaw ourselves
as engineers, teachers, psychologists,
film makers, electricians, accountants...
and architects. But what we didn’t
foresee was that one of us would have
their life journey cut short.
designed were crisp and sophisticated. Now looking back, I would say
he was the ideal student, who many others strived to be like.
The newspapers described him as a quiet and gentle soul and although
they are most certainly correct, they only skimmed the top of the
iceberg as this was just one side to Kamran’s amazing self. He was
hilarious, spontaneous, caring, bubbly, quirky, crazy and a great deal
of the time really cheeky. But that’s why we all loved him so much.
I remember back in the earlier years, although against the school
rules, we would not be able to leave the school yard after a lunch
break without the instigation of a food fight. And I must say Kamran
had a very precise and lethal throw. One example involved a piece
of banana right to one of our faces. His goofy grin and laugh were
utterly contagious, and paired along with his random
and entertaining behaviour, made him such an
enjoyable person to be around. He possessed
this care-free positive light, which can only
be found in very few people, spreading
warmth and happiness to all those
around him.
When I look back at moments like
this, instead of feeling sad I feel truly
happy that I was able to create memories
like this with him. But the thing that
my torn heart cannot bear is that I won’t
be able to see him in two or five or ten years
from now and ask Kamran how he’s going. And him
telling me he’s fallen in love, or he’s got an amazing job in
architecture, or he’s fulfilling all his wildest dreams. And it’s so hard
for me to picture him not being here, because he was always here. No
matter how far apart our lives and journeys may have become, I would
have always known that he would be living his life, conquering his
aspirations and all that he set out to achieve. I must admit I do feel a
bit selfish because I would give anything just to see that goofy grin or
hear that contagious laugh one more time.
Farewell Kamran
Some of us might have been closer to
Kamran than others, but I’m sure that I can
say on behalf of all of us that he was genuinely
a good guy. Not only did he share our classes and our
lunches, but he also took part in the same journey that we did
throughout our years at Christian Brothers College. Over this time
I was a first hand witness to Kamran’s transition from a quirky and
bright adolescent to a well-mannered and respectable gentleman. The
same ups and downs of emotion we experienced from the challenges
that were set before us were also Kamran’s. Whilst some of us tripped
and found ourselves lost along the way towards our goals, Kamran
continued to soar in his academia. His achievements were reached
through utilising his incredible mind and sheer determination to
succeed.
When it came to applying his creativity, Kamran was not far short of
a prodigy. He was not only able to produce amazing pieces of art with
his fine hands, but also technologically. His artworks were deep and
rich with meaning and imagination, whilst the conceptual things he
Kamran’s memories will forever stay with us but also leave us with
an empty hole that can never be filled with something as bright and
amazing as himself. And as much as I really do not want to, with an
aching heart, on behalf of myself, all the CBC boys and teachers,
Goodbye Kam, we’re going to miss you buddy.

In Memoriam
Paul Cronin
The college has provided funding for the rebinding of the original school Register which dates back
to the late 1800s. This work was completed by Vellum Bindery (Allen Press Pty Ltd). This will be
available for viewing during the night of the Old Collegians’ Dinner on 17 October. The museum
will also be open for inspection during that evening.

The
For many years, The Gym newsletter has provided a staple for CBC Old Collegians (and other readers) to keep in touch with the
school and each other through timely news items, articles of interest as well as notification of past and upcoming events.
In order to adapt to the changing needs of its readers and the desire to get information quickly, cost effectively and easily
disseminated, The Gym newsletter will now be published in electronic format as of 2015.
The electronic format will give many benefits to readers including more timely delivery and additional reading
accessibility options. It will also provide a saving on the costly manual publication overheads in paper printing
and despatch. Eventually, the printed and posted newsletter will be phased out.
The Gym ‘look and feel’ will stay the same. However, the newsletter will be available via the CBC web
site ( http://www.cbc.sa.edu.au/community/the-gym) for reading, downloading and printing (if you
desire). Readers will be able to provide their email address so as to receive a timely reminder
and web link with each new publication.

Over the coming months the CBC Old Collegians committee will be collecting contact
