O C TO B E R 1 9 2 0 1 4 2 9 T H S U N D A Y I N O R D I N AR Y T I M E THE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF PLEASANTON OUR MISSION: “To know Christ better, live as He calls us to live, and make Him better known”. From the Pastor…. My brothers and sisters, If we are honest, then we can confess that someone’s word of praise about who we are or what we do feels quite nice. Even if it is embarrassing, it still feels good. Unlike so many of us, Jesus is not easily swayed by platitudes of praise; He’s not suspicious about them either. Perhaps I would say to you that He is indifferent toward them. Why? My friends, He’s about His Father’s business. The lofty strokes and back pats are not even on His radar. So whether the praise hoisted upon Him is meant or not, it does not change His focus. He’s focused on the Father’s will. However, if we are not about the Father’s will, He will call us out! And that is precisely what happens in today’s Gospel (Matthew 22:15-21). The Pharisees give Him a stroke on the back but with the grin of a Cheshire cat. They want to set the trap. But Jesus is not interested in the carefully calculated game; He is focused on bringing God into full focus in the flesh! In the end, Jesus tells the Pharisees: “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God". Ironically enough, this passage has been enlisted for centuries to justify all sorts of behavior. How convenient it would be to separate who I am as a (ConƟnued on page 2) St. Augustine Church 3999 Bernal Avenue, P. O. What I do in Church belongs there! And, what happens on Wall Street remains on Wall Street. Well, I am just going to say simply, very simply, that this has little to do with any of that. Here’s what’s happening. On one level, Jesus dodges a lethal question, but He is also so wise because His Father remains His clear focus. Those who clearly understand the Kingdom of God that Jesus preaches smile quietly. The Kingdom is God’s direct, immediate and total rule over all the Earth and its peoples with justice and compassion. So Pleasanton and the Tri-Valley, this is easy to hear and hard to live. Everything belongs to God!!! So I invite you to give to God what belongs to Him. And what is left over, go ahead and give it to Caesar. Be careful not to make anything of this earth your God. So what is rendered to Caesar? Absolutely nothing. When we give back to God what rightfully belongs to God there is no room for possessiveness, exploitation, ruthless competition or inequality. All that we have - - including our very lives - - belongs solely to God. That’s good to remember when we order our lives each day and base our actions in Him. When we do this, we are focused. Just imagine if we gave a bit more energy toward this pursuit of His truth, which means our truth, each day. One day at a time… Blessings, MASSES AT ST. Giving Tree Volunteers This announcement always seems way too soon, however, the Giving Tree Committee has been at work with this project for over a month already. The Giving Tree Project helps poor families in our neighboring communities who would otherwise not have a Christmas. We have several “easy” jobs for volunteers. Help is needed to fill the envelopes for distribution on Saturday, November 8, at 9:00 AM, at St. Augustine Hall. We are looking for someone who is interested in coordinating volunteers at St. Augustine for envelope distribution. We also need help distributing envelopes after all Masses on the weekends of November 15 and 22. The final phase needs volunteers to receive gifts at St. Augustine and on the actual distribution day, December 14. Please consider one or more of these times to volunteer. For more information and to sign up, contact MaryBeth Bochner, (925) 321-9219 or [email protected]. Thank you! P AG E 5
