The course and assessment center will be useful for new and experienced health care professionals involved with clinical education. While the information presented covers the basic skills for clinical instructors, the interactive tasks and large and small group discussions will be of benefit even to experienced clinical educators. Fifteen (15) hours from this course apply towards the California PT and PTA licensure renewal requirements. Members of professions other than Physical Therapy who attend will receive a certificate of completion, but may not complete the assessment center or receive the credential per APTA policy. COURSE OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of the program, the participant will be able to: Identify roles and responsibilities of Clinical Instructors (CIs) Assess a student’s readiness to learn Plan clinical learning experiences Evaluate student performance Demonstrate skills to manage the exceptional student Discuss legal issues in clinical education FACULTY Suzie Maciel, MSPT is a Clinical Educator for Sutter Health Sacramento-Sierra Region & Sutter Medical Foundation. Bryan Coleman-Salgado, PT, DPT, CWS is Assistant Professor & Director of Clinical Education at CSU Sacramento, Department of Physical Therapy. COURSE DESCRIPTION This program is recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) as a Clinical Instructor (CI) Education and Credentialing Program. The program was developed through a grant funded by the APTA. The program addresses multiple facets of clinical instruction including: planning and preparing for students from the health care disciplines during their clinical education experiences, developing learning experiences and supporting ongoing learning through questioning and effective feedback. Advancing skills for effective evaluation of student performance, identifying and managing of students with exceptional situations. The program closes with a brief look at legal implications for clinical educators, including issues presented by ADA legislation. The “Assessment Center” provides each participant with the opportunity to apply information from the program in simulated situations. Successful completion of each station in the Assessment Center results in the awarding of APTA’s CI Credential. The six assessment center stations are integrated into the program schedule. It is essential that each participant attend all sessions of the course and assessment center in its entirety to receive the credential. Additionally scan and email a copy of your professional license and a copy of your APTA membership card (for member rates) to [email protected]. Your registration will not be complete until everything is received and no later than the September 19, 2014 deadline. Preference will be given to Clinical Instructors serving Northern California Clinical Education Consortium (NCCEC) programs, PTs and PTAs per APTA policy.
