McDonald Items for newsletter to be sent to: [email protected] 16th October 2014 Kaniva College All Year 12 students should be reviewing their notes and texts, completing practice exams and preparing themselves for the Exam period that is fast approaching. It’s a busy and important time in the lives of these young people and I’m sure families, teachers and friends will all support them through this period. I received a phone call on Monday from one of the organisers of the Kaniva Show Ambassador competition held at the show at the weekend. The caller wanted to let me know how well all the contestants spoke and carried themselves and also how highly the Judges spoke of them all and pass this on to the school. It was really positive to receive this feedback, even though it wasn’t a school event, it was great to hear our students did so well. I was also pleased to see so many of our students had entered the show in a wide variety of categories. Teachers at the school ensured that all students in year levels P-4 had entries in the show and I hope this added interest for both parents and students. I would also like to thank staff for their efforts in completing the displays that were on show in the complex. Mrs Tuckwell, Mr McFarlane, parent helpers and all the Discovery9 class should also be very pleased with their efforts at the weekend- selling baked potatoes at the show. Last count they had raised close to $1000 which are valuable funds with their Sydney Experience trip coming up shortly. It seems to be a bit of a tradition that every week has a theme these days. I would really like to thank Mrs McDonald and a number of other staff for their efforts in organising activities for Mental Health week last week. Students were given the opportunity to listen to guest speakers, share food with friends and also participate in a number of activities. It was a successful week. This week has been Health and PE week and Mr Cole and Miss O’Neill have also ensured there have been lots of activities to promote the theme. This will culminate in a staff Vs Year 12 netball match tomorrow. REMINDER Casual Clothes day tomorrow - Wear your favourite sports gear! Junior students enjoy last weeks Milo Cricket Clinic conducted by SACA Mental Health Week Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week- to help make students aware of the issue of Mental Health and to make them feel cared for a number of activities were held. Chanel Year 10 PDS Skoolbag App – Each year West Wimmera Shire, provide a concert for senior citizens in the shire. This year it was Kaniva’s turn for the concert. Our Year Ten PDS class was given the chance to cater for the afternoon tea for this concert held last Friday afternoon. Preparation and some cooking was meant to start last Thursday afternoon, however, due to the power problems everything had to be prepared and cooked on Friday. The students provided sandwiches, sausage rolls, toasties, lemon, apricot and peppermint slice and rumballs for 150 senior citizens. They did an amazing job with the preparation, cooking and serving of the food as well as serving tea and coffee. They cleaned up without complaint. A fantastic effort by all students. They now get to decide how to spend the money they raised. Music: Count Us In Music: Count Us In is an annual program in which schools from all over Australia perform the same song at the same time. As usual, this year’s song has been written by a group of high school students, and at Kaniva College all the primary students and the secondary music students will join more than half a million other Australians to perform the song. We’d love you to come and see our performance on Thursday 30th November at 12:30pm. Kaniva College welcomes Charlie and Oli to year five. The boys started at the College on Monday after relocating from Tasmania with their family. We hope they enjoy their time at Kaniva and that everyone makes them feel most welcome. Every two years, this international car show happens in Paris, the capital of France. It lasts for two weeks in October each time and this year’s finishes on Sunday. People come from all over the world to see the cars and more than a million visitors see the exhibitions each year. The best thing for most of the car lovers in our French program is that if you can get to Paris, it’s free for kids under 10 to go to the Motor Show. There are lots of different things to see at the Paris Motor Show. You can see the newest, fanciest cars, or you can go and see really old cars. There are also exhibitions of cars with new features, like alternative energy or new electronic systems, and there are heaps of journalists there to tell the rest of the world about it all. Today is Keira’s name saint’s feast day, so bonne fête to Keira in Prep. Mademoiselle Pfeifer Repairing the town entrances As part of my Personal Development Skills (PDS) unit 2 class I have to complete a project to benefit the community so I have decided to repair the town entrances. Some of the fence rails have fallen down so I will screw them back up and the sand has blown away at one end so I will bring some more in. I will also be planting some extra shrubs. By Mark Merrett On the last day of Term 3, Alannah, Chayle and Alice went down to the Kaniva Playgroup to present a cheque for our CLP (Community Learning Project) fundraiser. We had to do something that would benefit our community after we came back from Snowy River Campus School of Student Leadership School in Term 4, 2013. We cooked a barbeque at the Kaniva Playgroup and Maternal Child Health Christmas in July Market on the 27th of July, 2014. We raised $187.40 that we presented to the Playgroup that will go towards buying new furniture and toys for their new building. We would like to thank everyone for their support through the duration of our project. A big thank you for our parents help planning and during the event. By Chayle , Alice and Alannah The Junior School canteen will be open for recess each Wednesday Students can still go to the senior canteen, Carolyn & Donna are just offering a quick alternative for students. YEAR 9 QUEST TEAMS PROGRESS IN WATERSHEDS FINALS This year the watersheds competition was thrown open to all schools in South Western Victoria. There were 28 entries, including 4 from Kaniva College. All four teams have progressed through to the final ten out of twenty eight. The students will now present their project proposal to a new team of judges in Hamilton on Friday 28th of October. The minimum each team can win for themselves in $300.00 with the maximum being $1000.00. The College also receives the same amount, and there is also $10.000 for the projects to actually go ahead. Improving Serviceton Reservoir Our project is to renovate the Serviceton Reservoir by removing all the dead trees and putting a water tank out there for drinking. We will also be rebuilding the old school hothouse and be growing new trees. These new trees will be planted out at the res. By Sam, Joe and Harry. #KanivaWater Our project consists of getting a fresh water tank and placing it next to the toilet block by the Windmill Café, and running rain water into it. We are also looking to make water bottles with #KanivaWater and the Kaniva Logo on it. By Louise, Jaden, Luke, Duncan. Cleaner water for high school. Our Watersheds project is to give our high school cleaner and fresher water. We would like to clean out the high school water tank and join the junior and senior tanks together to create better water for everyone! Reducing Landfill Our Watersheds project is to help reduce landfill throughout the town, to do this, we came with a couple of solutions for this problem. By organizing wheelie bins for food scraps for our local shops and having our local lawn mowers lawn clippings picked up and taken to the Kaniva Community Compost pit, we are already making a great difference to our town and the community. We will also be putting more chooks around the school farm, organizing an education day and a Sunday waste day every week. Sinead, Cally, Renae and Brittany.
