unique characteristic of our Club is how
we think of ourselves as one big family,
and that includes the staff. Perhaps it’s
because we feel the closeness of living in a
small community and are part of a small club.
Members are always concerned when someone
is ill, but special attention is given when one of our
staff members is in need. A good example is how
we responded to the recent accident of our newly
hired staff person, Elysha Wilkinson.
On June 25th she had
a seizure while driving
and was involved in a
very bad accident. The
truck she was driving hit
several trees; it caught
fire and she was burned,
her leg was broken in
several places, and she
was trapped inside.
Fortunately, several men
with the required tools
arrived and performed
the risky job of getting her out before the vehicle
exploded into flames. She says she is extremely
grateful to be alive and wrote a heartfelt thank you
letter in “Readers Write” published in the GazetteJournal. Among the many she thanked for their help
and support was each and every member and
employee of the Mathews Yacht Club.
Shortly after the accident an eMinder was sent to
the membership explaining a financial need for
medications, since she did not have adequate
medical insurance. Our response was generous.
Elysha is slowly recovering, but because of her
severe injuries, it will be several months before we
MANTEL
OF THE MONTH
his month we have Marianne Hunley to
thank for the very attractive dining room
mantel.
So, when you see Marianne
around the club this
month be sure to let
her know how much
you appreciate her
creative efforts.
will see her smiling face back at work. Look for
Elysha’s personal note-card updating us on her
condition; it’s posted on the bulletin board at the
clubhouse.
Elysha is not the only employee we have helped
in times of need. There are many more examples
that can be cited. Employees are frequently
expressing appreciation for thoughtful acts. Last
month’s Decklines article told about the latest
distribution of Scholarship Funds. Each participant
expressed appreciation for our help which would not
have been possible without the generous support
from members.
Another written appreciation came from the staff
for the generous gratuity given by our Club member,
John Machen, Sr. He arranged for all the potted
plants that were used to decorate for our 65th
Anniversary Party; they were beautiful and there
were lots of them. It was his expressed wish that the
staff be given the plants following the event. The
staff was excited and extremely grateful, and made a
point of communicating their appreciation.
Several of our staff members have been our
employees for many, many years. They work hard
and tips are an important part of their compensation.
Members tip generously and frequently write thank
you notes to the Board expressing appreciation for
the staff’s work. The staff in turn shows a caring
concern for club members and work hard to please
us. We are fortunate to have an outstanding staff led
by a very capable Manager.
We are one big family with everyone caring for
one another. Thanks to the members for showing
concern for the staff, and thanks to the staff for their
outstanding service and caring for members.

ctober brings cooler weather
and a pumpkin full of events at
the Club.
First, on October 4th we'll bring an end
to the summer and cruising activities with
our Flag Lowering Dinner Dance. Brett
Small, our favorite One Man Band, will be
on hand to provide the music, and Mark
plans a delicious meal for all who attend.
The Wilson Ellis Club Night on October 16th
will feature our favorite historian, John V.
Quarstein, with another of his fascinating
stories. This year he will ruminate on the
actions that led to World War 1. Be sure to
make reservations early, as he is always
popular.
Two fun Friday Night Buffets, Oktoberfest
(October 10th) and Halloween (October
31st) will round out the month's special
events. Costumes for Halloween are
encouraged, but not mandatory.
Please note the following alert:
After several months of monitoring our
finances, it has become apparent that our
food costs have increased to a point that is
necessary to make some adjustments. As
a result, from time to time, you will see an
increase on some of our Friday nights
pricing. This will occur when we serve a
more expensive menu, such as snow crab
legs, prime rib, etc. We are a private club
operating on a break-even basis, and we
will continue on that premise.
Looking ahead:
• November 8: Lobster Dinner,
• November 15: Volunteers' Reception.
If you volunteered your time during the
year, and do not receive an invitation to this
reception, please inform Godwin Jones,
and he will add you to the list. Remember,
this event is by invitation only.

FROM THE
MANAGER’S DESK
TO SHOW OUR APPRECIATION for our
hard working employees, we have initiated
an “Employee of the Quarter” program.
Each quarter we will highlight one of our
staff in the Decklines.
This quarter’s employee is Virginia Bell.
Virginia is our
longest tenured
employee having
served the Club for
12 years.
During your next
visit to the Club,
please let Virginia
know how much
she is appreciated.
he Board of Directors approved
four membership applications on
September 16.
The approved applicants have been
placed on the Waiting List, a current
copy of which is posted on the club
bulletin board:
Richard A. (Dick) Urban of Deltaville;
Sponsor: Mike Ailsworth
John S. Sieg, Jr. of Hudgins;
Sponsor: Will Story
J. Chandler Hogg of Gloucester;
Sponsor: Tom Flounders
David (Dave) Mortimer of North;
Sponsor: Tom Flounders
The Waiting List currently has 34
approved member/applicants.
Two new applications were
presented to the Board on September
16. The names of the applicants are
posted on the bulletin board until the
Board meeting on October 21 so that
any member may comment.
Robert S. Chase of Richmond;
Sponsor: Tim Hill
Dennis J. McShane of Hudgins;
Sponsor: Will Story
Now is a great time to sponsor for
membership that friend or someone
who is moving to the area. The
applicant will most likely be on the
Waiting List for 16 months. While on
the Waiting List, they may enjoy the
club once a month at regular functions
and also have addition privileges such
as attending Club Nights and other
special functions like the Flag
Lowering dinner/dance, rent a slip, go
on cruises. All this for a monthly cost
lower than our dues.
Any member may sponsor an
applicant. All that is required is a
completed application, payment of
$675 application fee and a letter from
the sponsor. Application forms may be
obtained in person from the Club
Manager or by e-mail from the
Secretary or any Board member.
Please keep the Secretary informed
of any address, phone or e-mail
address changes [email protected].

lag lowering is scheduled for
October 4th. This marks the end
of our yachting and summer
schedule and the start of our fall
schedule.
Check the calendar of events, the Rear
Commodore has October filled with some
of our favorite fall activities.
October is also when we scheduled the
beginning of the construction for the roof
over the deck project. Please excuse any
dust and inconvenience the construction
may cause. We will make every effort for
the construction to have minimal impact on
our members and club activities.
Construction will begin about October 20th
and take about five to six weeks.
Carpeting has been ordered for the
main dining room. It will be in four
sections and positioned in the seating
area. This will give the club manager the
flexibility to remove sections of carpet, if
necessary for special events. This will also
help reduce the noise level we currently
experience in this dining room. We expect
the carpet to be delivered early in October.

Fall Long Cruise —
Fourteen boats participated in this fall’s cruise,
designed to allow people to come and depart as
needed, have fun, and visit some of our reciprocal
yacht clubs.
A 60% chance of rain and T-storms nixed the
FBYC, but improved weather
the next day, allowed the sail
to Cape Charles where we
enjoyed sundowners, good
food in the restaurants, ice
cream, walks in town and the
unique
shops.
The trip to Hampton Yacht
Club proved a very easy
day. We had sundowners
(of course) on the dock; the
HYC commodore warmly welcomed us, followed
by an
excellent
dinner. The
following day
some boats spit off for home or other clubs while a
group motor-sailed up the
James, past the Ghost Fleet,
Jamestown, the plantations
and wonderful scenery all
along the way, such as this
beautiful sunset, over
Cobham Bay.
What proved to be the last stop was Old Point
Comfort Marina & Yacht Club as a threatening
weather forecast prompted a consensus that it was
time to head home. Still, a good time was had by all.

start on Saturday September 13.
Weather prevented leaving on
Friday as planned.

input for the reciprocal club list please email
