Welcome to Kangasala
Kangasala is
waiting for You
The virile municipality of Kangasala is an ideal holiday resort for a
foreign visitor. Known for its large variety of cultural activities and
unique nature, Kangasala offers much to experience round the year.
The intriguing automobile museums, the excellent public swimming
hall of Kuohu, the horseback riding stables and the wide range of
hiking terrain are the absolute favourites for the families with children.
Numerous art galleries and artists’ homes as well as the theatres
delight people who love culture especially during the summer
months. In the boutiques and workshops of the local artisans there
are always beautiful handicrafts to be purchase.
Those who yearn for romantic moments can linger in the calmness of
the old churches or admire the impressive landscapes which open
from the observation towers on the ridges. The great scenery with old
manors, blue lakes and wide fields has fascinated holiday-makers
for several centuries and it has also been a source of inspiration for
significant Finnish poets, composers and painters.
In the summertime Kangasala blooms with happenings. Several cafes
and restaurants serve homemade delicacies provided by the local
producers. You can spend the holiday of your life just by relaxing,
fishing or canoeing on the lakes while staying in a rental cottage.
Feel the genuine atmosphere and friendly people!

Much to see
and experience
The intriguing history of cars and traffic
The Autokylä Mobilia automobile and road museum 21 introduces
changing exhibitions every year. The basic collection consists of a
cross-section of 20th century American and European cars, ranging
from classic vehicles to the history of rally car racing. You can also feel
the charm of an aged vehicle by renting an old Anglia or Volkswagen
Beetle. The museum also hosts a children’s traffic park, a museum
shop and a restaurant.
The Vehoniemi automotive museum 20 exhibits rare cars and motorcycles. The museum also hosts a café and the Leilan Lelukauppa
toy shop with a large selection of little model cars. On summer Fridays it is a tradition for motorists to gather at Vehoniemi. The Vehoniemenharju observation tower is located right next to the museum.
The historical churches
The Kangasala grey granite church 1 was built in 1767. Its treasures
are the particularly fascinating baroque style star-patterned ceiling
and the rare wooden sculptures from the 15th century. The Sahalahti
church 16 , built in 1829, and Kuhmalahti church, built in 1846,
represent Finnish church architecture and wood construction.
Kuohu – the Kangasala public swimming pool
The public swimming pool 10 is a well-equipped water sports oasis
for people of all ages. It is equipped with many pools, a high-quality
gym and a café.

Culture and art
Art, sights and
history
Museums
The Kangasala museum 2 in the town centre presents excavation
findings from around the area. The museum is well known for exhibiting
the lives of historical people with puppet characters.
Sahalahden Museomakasiini 41 and Kuhmalahden Kotiseutumuseo 39 are the local historic house museums.
The Äijälä centre 17, keeping up traditions, presents the old Karelian
culture that was left behind the Russian border after the Second
World War.
Art exhibitions and artists’ homes
The Kuhmalahden Taidepappila cultural centre 38 is hosted by
ceramist Teemu Luoto. For over forty years the old vicarage house
with its lovely yard has been an ideal scene for art exhibitions,
art courses, happenings and performances during the summer
months.
In the home studio of Willa Kosmos 24 can be seen glass and textile
artist Virpi Kinnunen’s imaginative and colourful art.
TaideTalli 56 is a spacious gallery built in a stone barn on the shore
of lake Längelmävesi.
Taidetila Terra, 11 at the main library, hosts exhibitions introducing
local art and history. There you can also read the daily newspapers
or surf the Internet for free.
4
Handicraft and gift shopping
Kangasalan Lepokoti 4 has an exciting history with numerous
significant Finnish artists, including composer Jean Sibelius,
staying at this peculiar hostel. Nowadays the local artists and
artisans have their Kesäpuoti summer shop in the house selling
their charming works.
The romantic countryside farm Marjamäen Pajutila 25 is surrounded
by willow plantations and animal figures made of willow. The old
family farm features a gift shop full of interior decorations and a
café serving delicious cakes and savory pastry.
5
Nature
Magnificent
scenery
Kangasala is an exceptionally beautiful municipality with
five ridges and three large, and numerous smaller, lakes.
The old observation towers built on the ridges are culturally
and historically valuable.
The Kirkkoharju observation tower
Open 1 May to 30 September
from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Kirkkoharju

The Keisarinharju ridge (“The Emperor’s ridge”) got its name
from the past emperors and kings who visited the place to
admire the splendid view. The first Finnish observation tower
was built there in 1819. Nowadays there is an observation
platform.
On the Vehoniemenharju ridge an observation tower was built
in 1927, offering views over the lakes Roine and Längelmävesi.
The ridge is in the middle of a nature conservation area, and
it is one of the most beautiful places to visit along the ridge
formations.
The highest of the ridges is the Kirkkoharju ridge close to the
centre. The observation tower repsesents the functional style
and it was built in 1930.
There used to be a spring on the hillside of the Kuohunharju
ridge, which was said to have healing properties. In the
beginning of the 20th century Kangasala was a popular
spa resort.
The Vehoniemi observation tower
next to the Vehoniemi automotive
museum is open daily.
35

The famous Finnish song Kesäpäivä Kangasalla (“A summer
day at Kangasala”) describes the lovely scenery which opens
from the Haralanharju ridge in Suinula. A monument of the
writer of the song, Zachris Topelius, is mounted on the top
of the ridge along with the observation tower.
Exercise in
pure nature
The rich nature of Kangasala offers good facilities to exercise,
walk, hike, bike or just have leisure time in the woods and
wilderness and on the shores of numerous lakes.
For trekking select the suitable terrain and length from the
many routes and nature trails on offer. The Kaarinanpolku
hiking track is a popular 60 kilometres long trail passing
various historical sites, occasionally branching out to
undisturbed wilderness. There are two huts and campfire
places along the trail.
The Haralanharju observation
tower is open daily.
36
Haralanharju

Laipanmaa, stretching across three municipal areas, is one
of the largest wildernesses in Finland. There are more than
20 kilometres of well-kept, guided paths, several small lakes,
and steep, rocky descents as well as overnight stopover
places, huts and campfire places.
Saarikylät 48 is a characteristic village community on the
shores of lake Roine. The best description for the area is
“inland archipelago”. A memorable experience is to hire a
canoe and enjoy the peace of the lake by gliding along the
canoeing routes. In the wintertime there is also a skating route.
The Keisarin portaat observatorion
platform on the Keisarinharju ridge,
close to Mobilia is open daily.
37
Keisarin portaat

The Pohtiolampi pond 22 is an exciting place, where you
may with good luck see the ospreys to catch rainbow trouts.
You can also try your own fisherman’s luck and fish a rainbow
trout and prepare your catch for a meal in a Finnish way on
a campfire.
In Kangasala there are also many horseback riding stables,
giving lessons and arranging courses for adults and children.
One of the most beautiful beaches in the province is located
within a walking distance from the town centre, at Vesaniemi,
on the shore of lake Vesijärvi. There is a beach in Mobilia as
well, on the shore of lake Längelmävesi. Besides these, there
are near ten beaches around Kangasala.
The Pohtiolampi bird watching
and observation tower is open
according to the opening times of
Pohtiolampi.

Cultural events
Events and
happenings
The Kangasala summer happenings and cultural events make you
feel glad and most welcomed. For people of all ages there are themed
days and traditional happenings arranged by the local associations,
theatre and music groups and museums. The culturally active town
has a happy spirit of doing things together. The best way to feel it by
yourself is to join the fun.
The first sign of a summer is the marketplace event “Kangasalan
Yrittäjien Kevätmarkkinat” arranged by various local entrepreneurs
in May. The summer starts officially on the 1st of June at Pirtinmäki
with songs and speeches.
8
In addition to the National Day of Museum Vehicles (Valtakunnallinen
Museoajoneuvopäivä) the Mobilia and Vehoniemi automotive
museums arrange several special events during the summer months.
The night café season for motorists in Vehoniemi starts in April.
In July the Lasten Löytöretki children’s event offers children and
families lots of fun to do in spite of language barriers over the course
of a whole week.
The Restaurantapäivät market is Finland’s oldest and largest
market for vehicle parts, collectibles and second hand articles in
July and August.
The Saarikylien Myllypäivät event organised at the Haavisto flourmill
on the last weekend of July offers organic products from the local
producers and a diverse programme.
The Kangasala market square is a lively place of trade and happenings
from Monday to Saturday.
Theatre for adults and children
In Kangasala there are excellent amateur theatre groups, which
produce plays and performances for both adults and children. In the
summertime The Ramppi-teatteri group presents plays that often
tell stories of the local history and the significant cultural persons.
For the children the Pikkuteatteri group writes endearing fairy tales
and the puppet theatre Hupilainen enchant with their charming
puppet characters.
