Rostock has the only deep water universal port on the German
Baltic Sea coast. It offers excellent nautical conditions. The
protected location of the port where the Warnow river flows into
the Baltic Sea, the uncomplicated access way from sea only
3.6 sea miles long, as well as a water depth of the sea channel of
14.5 meters allow vessels up to 300 meters in length, 45 meters in
beam and with a draft of 13 meters to access the port.

With an area of 750 hectares, Rostock’s port is one of the largest on the German Baltic Sea coast. Due to the large expansion
areas available, it is possible to react flexibly to the requests
of national and international companies. The optimized use of
existing port areas has always priority over an external port
expansion.

rape seed to whole-corn rape meal and rape oil for the production of biodiesel and edible oil. Most of the raw material comes

Rostock-Warnemünde is the most important German cruise port.
180 visits by cruise ships are expected in 2012. The Warnemünde
Cruise Center, officially opened on 01 May 2005, provides cruise
passengers with a high level of service and is equipped to handle
a passenger turn-around of more than 2,500 people. The building
is designed to comply with all ISPS security requirements. An additional passenger terminal was put into operation at berth 8 for
the beginning of the 2006 season. In 2008, the quay at berth 8 was
newly built along a length of 465 m.
Three berths are available in Warnemünde with a water depth
of up to 10 meters, which allows to accommodate ships with a
maximum draft of 8.53 meters.
The ferry terminal contains five berths. Berth 64 is equipped for
the clearance of railway carriages. An overpass leads directly
from the ferry terminal to the motorway A19/A20.
The terminal for intermodal traffic is in the direct vicinity of the
ferry terminal.

The fertilizer quay is equipped with a ship loader (1,000 t/h) which
is connected to a carriage unloading station and warehouse
with a capacity of 60,000 tonnes by means of a 700-meter-long
conveyor belt system.

Cement handling
The company Rostocker Zementumschlagsgesellschaft (RZU)
handles cement, sea gravel, crushed stone and other building
materials at berth 21. Additionally, the company Seehafen Rostock Umschlagsgesellschaft handles approximately 450,000
tonnes of cement annually for export at berth 33. Suspended due
to construction work on railway line Rostock-Berlin in 2012 the
handling of cement starts again after the reopening of the railway
line.
Up to 20,000 tonnes of coal can be discharged daily at berths
23 and 24. Bridge cranes are used for unloading sea gravel,
limestone and crushed stone at berth 22. A storage area with a
capacity of 240,000 tonnes of anthracite coal exists. Conveyor
belts carry the coal to the adjacent 500 MW anthracite coalfired power plant. A processing facility for sea gravel and a
cement terminal are located at berth 21.
The chemicals port is located east of the oil port and serves as
the operational port of a fertilizer production plant. Two pipelines
connect the tanker berth with the production plant. One of the
pipelines is used for the discharge of cooled liquid ammonia from
liquid gas tankers to the plant. The second pipeline is used to
pump liquid ammonium nitrate urea (LAU) fertilizer to the port for
loading on tankers.

The Federal State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Hanseatic City of Rostock are the owners of the port of Rostock. Their
interests are attended to by the company Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock.
Since 1990 Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft invested much more
than 300 million Euros into the ports infrastructure with support of
the Hanseatic city of Rostock and federal state of MecklenburgVorpommern.

industrial area of the Rostock seaport

Two ship loaders with a capacity of up to 1,000 tonnes per hour
are available for the export of grain, feed and oil seeds. One
unloader with a capacity of up to 300 tonnes per hour is used
in discharging the ships. A conveyor belt system facilitates the
movement of grain from the silos to the ships. The total capacity
of all silos is 436,000 tonnes. Berth 16 also contains two grab
cranes for loading and unloading building materials.

The transport of goods to and from the port can occur via the motorway A 19 Berlin-Rostock, the coastal motorway A 20, by rail, or
via the pipelines Rostock-Schwedt and Rostock-Böhlen. The port
offers optimal conditions for the processing of railroad cargo with
its terminal for intermodal traffic and own railroad track system
with a total length of 54 kilometers as well as the marshalling
yard just outside the port grounds with 180 km of track length.
From the port train station, electrified track sections lead into the

hinterland via Magdeburg or Berlin. About one-fifth of all goods
handled at the port are transported by rail.

One of the most modern malthouses of Europe is located at the
grain harbour. The company’s own 10,000-t-silo and the additional
connection to the silo facilities of the port guarantee the rapid
receipt of brewer’s barley and likewise, the rapid dispatching of
goods.

Maritime industrial park
In November 2004, one of the most comprehensive development
projects at the sea port since its opening in 1960 was completed.
In only 21 months, a new 25 hectare area was created, to be used
as the ‘Maritime Industrial Park I’. 2003 the Liebherr company
began the construction of its facility here and started production
2005. In December 2004, Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock
mbH began developing the ‘Maritime Industrial Park II’. This site
encompasses a total area of 35 hectares. 2008 the company EEW
Special Pipe Construction began its production of mega pipes.
Since 2008 Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft is developing the
`Maritime Industrial Park III`. This includes 9 properties with a
total area of aprox. 52 hectares. The most important project was
the northern extention of `Pier III` with aprox. 12 hectares.
This was completed in 2012. In line with this a new berth for
handling of heavy goods (berth 15) was built at the eastern side of
pier III from January 2011.
Since the beginning in 2003 Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft
invested 88 million Euros into this project at pier III. With the
construction of logistic areas at berth 25 and at the grain silos on
pier IV the development of the ‚Maritime Industrial Park IV‘ began
in 2012.

There are eight quay-side warehouses at the seaport. Five warehouses with a total storage area of approx. 50,000 m² are located
in the vicinity of the Ro-Ro terminal and terminal for intermodal
traffic and are used primarily for the storage of paper/cellulose
and other forest products (contact: see under cargo handling
companies).
Three warehouses with a total capacity of 63,000 m² are located
on Pier II (general cargo) and are used for steel products and
other general cargo (contact: see General Cargo Terminal GmbH).
Railway facilities
A railroad marshalling yard with approximately 180 kilometers of
track length is located just outside of the port. Additionally,
the port grounds themselves contain 54 kilometers of tracks with
direct access to the reloading points and cargo facilities.
The renewal of railway sidings took place from 2005 to 2007
including the renewal of the safety equipment and 93 switches.
Rostock-Laage (Airport)
The airport Rostock – Laage is located approximately 40 kilometers from the port on the A 19 motorway. It serves as an airport
for regular line connections, holiday flights, general aviation and
cargo.

In 2011, the Rostock terminal for intermodal traffic recorded a
total cargo throughput of 76,720 cargo units. This corresponds to
MOLDAVIEN of 1.5 million tonnes. There are 30 block trains at the

Experienced pilots and high-power tugs are available around the
clock for vessels using the port. For ships exceeding 100 meters
in length, 15 meters in width or a draft of 7.5 meters pilotage is
compulsory.

Rostock is an important trans-shipment center for paper for Germany, Austria, France, the Czech Republic and southern Europe.
The company UPM Sales GmbH accounted for 311,000 tonnes of
the total 319,00 tonnes of paper handled in 2011.
The export of paper began in summer 2002. Since then paper is
exported regulary to the USA and England.

Six berths with a handling capacity of up to 6,000 t/h are available
for tankers with a load of up to 100,000 tonnes. Tanks with a total
volume of 700,000 m³ are available on site for storage. Cargo may
also be transported by means of tank wagons, via two pipelines
(Schwedt, Böhlen) or tank trucks. The oil port is operated by the
company Grosstanklager-Ölhafen Rostock GmbH, a neutral service provider for all mineral oil companies moving cargo through
Rostock. The oil port is also the location of a biodiesel plant with
an annual capacity of 150,000 tonnes.
